Robbie Gould emerges as potential Titans free-agent target

With Robbie Gould notifying the 49ers he’s leaving in free agency, he now becomes a target for the Titans.

The Tennessee Titans will be in the market for a kicker this offseason after the team cut veteran kicker Randy Bullock recently, and one very intriguing name has now become a potential option for Tennessee.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco 49ers kicker Robbie Gould has made it clear he will not only test free agency, but will play elsewhere in 2023.

Of course, the Titans’ need for a kicker makes him a candidate by default, but there’s more than one reason to believe he could end up in Nashville.

Gould spent six seasons with the Niners, first coming aboard in 2017, which just so happens to be the year new Titans general manager Ran Carthon began his stint in San Fran.

Both spent all six of their years there together, so they should be familiar with one another.

Tennessee let Bullock go because of his lack of leg strength, which limited the team to shorter field goals, potentially taking points off the board.

The Titans have Caleb Shudak on the roster and he has a bigger leg than Bullock, but he lacks the experience to trust him as the starter.

Gould is the best kicker on the market and checks all the boxes, so it goes without saying the Titans should be interested.

He has the leg to make longer field goals and is as consistent as they come, with his 84.4 percent success rate on field goals ranking eighth in NFL history.

The only real concern is Gould’s age, as he just turned 40, but he is coming off a good season, so there’s no indication he’s on the down side just yet.

“I’m nowhere near retiring,” Gould said back in January. “I got a lot left to do from a career perspective — No. 1 being winning a Super Bowl. And, two, I’m pretty close to a lot of milestones I think would be pretty neat to be able to accomplish.”

Gould’s last contract paid him $7.25 million over two years, which worked out to an average of $3.625 million, which is about $1 million more than what Tennessee was going to pay Bullock this season.

If there’s mutual interest and the Titans are planning on competing this year and can make it work with their tight salary cap situation, Carthon should definitely bring Gould aboard.

4 Titans make The Ringer’s top 100 free agents list

Four Titans made the cut on The Ringer’s top 100 free agents list.

In a recent list from The Ringer ranking the top 100 players set to hit free agency this offseason, four Tennessee Titans made the cut.

According to The Ringer’s Sheil Kapadia, linebacker David Long (No. 27), left tackle Taylor Lewan (No. 51), right guard Nate Davis (No. 62) and tight end Austin Hooper (No. 79) were all listed.

Of course, Lewan is now a former Titan after the team cut him recently, but we’ll include him anyway. There is also a possibility Lewan returns to Nashville, something the team hasn’t closed the door on.

Here’s what Kapadia had to say about each of the Titans he listed:

Titans’ Mike Vrabel leaves door open for Taylor Lewan’s return

Mike Vrabel wouldn’t rule out Taylor Lewan returning to the Titans, but said “those are not conversations we’re having right now

The Tennessee Titans parted ways with their former 2014 first-ound pick and franchise left tackle recently, with the team deciding to cut Taylor Lewan after nine seasons in Nashville.

The move was expected. Lewan was set to make nearly $15 million in 2023 after suffering a pair of torn ACLs the past three seasons. Tennessee saved every bit of that money by releasing the veteran, which is especially huge during an offseason in which the Titans are strapped for cash.

But as has been the thought all along, the Titans aren’t ruling out Lewan staying, something head coach Mike Vrabel mentioned while at the 2023 NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

“I wish him the best,” Vrabel said, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. “Like I told him: We’ll see where you’re at (later), and if you still want to play. If it sounds like he does, we could always revisit that. But those are not conversations we’re having right now.”

Lewan, who is still recovering from last year’s knee injury, has said that retirement is a possibility, but he’s also expressed the desire to remain in Nashville if he does play.

Two things would have to happen for the two sides to stay together. First, the Titans would have to absolutely strike out at left tackle this offseason to find themselves in a position to depend on Lewan, who is injury-prone.

Then, the two sides would have to meet at a lower price than the one Lewan stood to make before getting cut. Lewan and the Titans might have very different definitions of what that is, though.

Ultimately, I think Lewan is done in Nashville. If he doesn’t retire, which I think is the most likely outcome, he’ll play someplace else in 2023.

Titans offseason preview at OLB: More questions than answers

In our latest offseason preview, we take a look at the Titans’ outside linebacker position.

The Tennessee Titans have more questions than answers when it comes to their outside linebacker position going into the 2023 campaign.

Tennessee was riddled with injuries at the position last year. Harold Landry missed the entire season with a torn ACL, and Bud Dupree missed six games and exited multiple others early in what was another injury-plagued year for him.

The injuries to Dupree and Landry allowed 2021 fourth-round pick Rashad Weaver, who missed the entirety of his rookie campaign due to injury, to see extended playing time.

But after a hot start to the season with four sacks in four games, Weaver cooled off the rest of the way, tallying 1.5 sacks in the final 13 games.

In our latest offseason preview for the Titans, we take a look at the outside linebackers who are under contract, pending free agents, and then we’ll talk about what the team might do at the position in 2023.

Tennessee Titans’ history of using the franchise, transition tags

While the Titans won’t be using the franchise tag this year, they have used it five other times in team history, dating back to their days as the Oilers.

The deadline to utilize either the franchise or transition tags is approaching on March 7, but the Tennessee Titans are highly unlikely to use it, as the team simply doesn’t have anyone worthy of using it on.

The next possible candidate for the tag will be star defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, who stands to be a free agent in 2024 as he enters the final year of his rookie deal this year.

However, I tend to believe it won’t come to that and Simmons will get the big-money deal he deserves. Still, we can’t rule it out.

The last time the Titans used the franchise tag was in 2020, when the team slapped it on running back Derrick Henry, who eventually inked a four-year, $50 million deal.

While the Titans have never utilized the transition tag, they have used the franchise tag on a total of five players in team history. Here’s a look at who they are, and what eventually happened afterwards.

Titans coaches happy with Malik Willis’ offseason work, demeanor

Titans coaches are pleased with what they’re seeing out of Malik Willis so far this offseason.

The 2023 offseason will be a big one for Tennessee Titans 2022 third-round pick and quarterback, Malik Willis.

The Liberty product saw three starts in place of an injured Ryan Tannehill in 2022, and while he did show some flashes, the results overall were nothing to write home about.

Granted, he didn’t have much to work with, but Josh Dobbs was able to do more with the same cast of characters, further soiling the 23-year-old’s rookie season, which has led to fans being down on him going into 2023.

According to head coach Mike Vrabel, Willis’ offseason work is already well under way, with the second-year quarterback working out with a group of coaches down in Jacksonville and reporting back to the team.

Vrabel also noted that Willis’ demeanor around the building has been that of a starting quarterback.

“He’s already dove into the offseason, and he’s communicated with the staff about where he’s been, working with different coaches, a group in Jacksonville, and reporting back,” Vrabel said, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. “His demeanor, walking through the building and seeing him in the cafeteria, he understands what it is supposed to look like, being a starting quarterback, being a quarterback in this league. You have to be on when you come in the building, it’s a certain presence you have to have.”

Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly basically echoed those sentiments, saying Willis is “doing what it takes to be a professional quarterback”, while also saying he’s “excited with the progress” the young signal-caller is making.

“Malik is doing a great job coming into the building every day, having a good routine right now,” Kelly said. “He is so charismatic, comes in, pops his head in with a big ol’ smile, and it’s exciting to see him in that routine, doing what it takes to be a professional quarterback. We’ll see where everything ends up, but we’re excited with the progress that it looks like he’s made.”

Perhaps the most important evaluation comes from new general manager Ran Carthon, who was not responsible for drafting Willis and certainly isn’t married to the youngster in his first season in Nashville.

Carthon says he’s looking for Willis to improve not just physically, but mentally as well given how important that aspect is for quarterbacks.

“The one thing I talked to Malik about was just to continue to grow as a quarterback, and that is not just throwing the ball, and not all these different things,” Carthon said. “A quarterback is so much more mental than it is physical, and from that standpoint I just talked to him about being able to lead the locker room, being able to have that presence and just continuing just to reach out to some of the greats in our games, and guys that (could) help him.

“So, we have been able to connect, and he’s reached out to other quarterbacks in the league to kind of serve as mentors for him, which kind of shows you who he is as a person and where he sees himself and where he wants to go.”

The hope was that Willis might be ready to take the reins after Year 1, but the Titans simply can’t give him the keys to the car yet after what we saw in 2022.

Looking ahead to next season, Willis has to show he’s capable of taking over the starting job at some point, but his first order of business will be to win the backup job behind whoever Tennessee tabs as the starter.

If Willis can prove he deserves a shot and succeeds, it would solve a massive, long-term problem Tennessee is facing under center.

Titans set for meeting with Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo

The Titans are set to have an in-person interview with Jonathan Mingo next week.

The Tennessee Titans will talking to a lot of 2023 NFL draft prospects at the wide receiver position ahead of April’s event, as that spot is one of the team’s biggest needs to address this offseason.

After learning that the Titans were set to meet with TCU wideout, Quentin Johnston, we can also add Ole Miss wide receiver Jonathan Mingo to the group of players Tennessee will talk to more in-depth.

While down at the 2023 NFL Combine on Friday, Mingo revealed that he is set to have an in-person meeting with the Titans next week, according to AtoZ Sports Nashville’s Buck Reising.

Here’s a look at some of the 6-foot-2, 225-pound wideouts strengths and weakness, per The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez:

Top Reasons to Buy In:

Run-after-the-catch ability

Play strength

Playmaking ability

Top Reasons For Concern:

Ability to separate vertically

Route-running

Can he catch the ball away from his body?

While Mingo doesn’t have the vertical speed the Titans need, he does meet what they’re looking for in terms of size and physicality and is similar to another former Ole Miss receiver the Titans used to have.

The wide receiver position is one of the toughest ones to gauge this cycle due to the myriad of projections we’re seeing from experts, but Mingo figures to get selected at some point on Day 2.
