Nina Nunes didn’t follow wife Amanda in split from ATT, will train there ‘until I finish my career’

Nina Nunes is still training at American Top Team despite her wife Amanda Nunes having a well-documented divorce from the gym.

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]Nina Nunes[/autotag] is still training at American Top Team despite her wife Amanda Nunes having a well-documented divorce from the gym.

Following an upset loss to Julianna Peña at UFC 269 in December, Amanda parted ways with her longtime home at ATT in Coconut Creek, Fla., in favor of starting her own facility just a short drive away. That decision seemed to pay off for her after gaining revenge on Peña in the rematch at UFC 277 in July.

Nina (10-7 MMA, 4-4 UFC), who is set to meet Cynthia Calvillo (9-4-1 MMA, 6-4-1 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 41 card, opted against following suit. Her history with ATT goes back much further than Amanda’s, and Nina said she was able to allocate her time and maximize the conditions of working in multiple gyms.

“I stayed at American Top Team – I did both,” Nunes told MMA Junkie and other reporters at UFC on ESPN 41 media day. “I trained in the morning at American Top Team, I went to the gym, watched Amanda’s sparring, I coached her sparrings and then I trained conditioning after that. So I was actively in both gyms, I had good training partners at American Top Team. I’ve been there for 15 years. I’m going to stay there until I finish my career. I have the gym with Amanda as well. It’s 15 minutes apart. It makes no different to me. Amanda is going to pick whatever times she wants to train and we work around that.”

Nina was supposed to fight Calvillo at UFC on ESPN 39 on July 9, but she came down with an illness around weigh-ins. She said she went through every possible avenue to find a way into the octagon, but ultimately she “couldn’t keep food up” and was forced to pull out of the fight.

The UFC booked a new date, and now the matchup happens this weekend at Pechanga Arena and airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

“I wanted to still fight Cynthia,” Nunes said. “I thought it would be fair to her, too, she prepared for a fight against me. It wasn’t her fault. They were asking to maybe do it in Long Island, but i wasn’t sure if it would be a 24-48 hour thing. The next card they had available was San Diego, I think she’s from California so it worked out well. It was enough time she was able to re-cut the weight.”

This fight is an important one for Nina’s career. She’s lost back-to-back fights against Mackenzie Dern and Tatiana Suarez, albeit nearly two years apart because of the time off she took to birth her and Amanda’s child.

Nina had no desire to have a three-fight losing skid on her record, and at UFC on ESPN 41 will be moving up to the women’s flyweight division for the first time in her UFC career.

She thinks this is the division where she belongs, and the 36-year-old hopes it’s where her best performance unfold.

“I feel so strong at 125,” Nunes said. “It was a no brainer. I am a 125er. I trained with the girls in (‘The Ultimate Fighter’) house that were 125ers, and it was like, ‘Yeah, I’m a 125er.”

UFC adds Amanda Lemos vs. Nina Nunes to Dec. 18 event

Amanda Lemos will look to crack the top 10 when she meets battle-tested veteran Nina Nunes.

[autotag]Amanda Lemos[/autotag] will look to crack the top 10 when she meets a battle-tested veteran.

Lemos (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) faces [autotag]Nina Nunes[/autotag] (10-7 MMA, 4-4 UFC) at a Dec. 18 UFC card. The event doesn’t yet have a known venue or location.

A person with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Combate was first to report the booking.

Brazil’s Lemos is 4-0 since moving down to 115 pounds. The 34-year-old is coming off her second-straight first-round finish. She needed only 35 seconds to TKO Montserrat Ruiz at UFC on ESPN 26 in July.

Nunes, who recently tested positive for COVID-19, will look to snap a two-fight losing skid. After notching four straight wins, Nunes dropped a decision to Tatiana Suarez and was submitted by Mackenzie Dern in her return after an almost two-year long layoff.

UFC on ABC 2 results: Mackenzie Dern shuts down Nina Nunes, wins by first-round submission

Mackenzie Dern pushed her winning streak to four as she continued to make a push toward title contender status.

[autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] continues to look like a threat to the title.

The UFC strawweight contender picked up her fourth consecutive win, submitting [autotag]Nina Nunes[/autotag] with an armbar in the first round of their 115-pound clash at UFC on ABC 2.

The bout was part of the UFC on ABC 2 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN following prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

Dern (10-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) was completely dominant against Nunes (10-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC).

The 28-year-old jiu-jitsu champion took down Nunes with ease early in the first, using a single leg takedown. From there began her handy work. Dern passed guard, side control, and then moved to mount. From there, Dern began working for an armbar. Nunes did all she could to defend and managed to fight it off for a good while, but Dern’s efforts eventually got the arm straight and Nunes to tap with just 12 seconds reminding in the first.

Dern hasn’t tasted defeat since her 2019 loss to Amanda Ribas. Prior to that, Dern was unbeaten with a 7-0 start in her professional career. She said post-fight that she’s eyeing a fight with a top-five opponent next.

Nunes, on the other hand, is now on a two-fight losing streak. This was her return fight after stepping away from the fight game back in 2019 game due to pregnancy.

UFC on ABC 2 Ansaroff vs. Dern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Ansaroff 10-6 | Dern 10-1

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Ansaroff (-140), who is sometimes listed as Nina Nunes, enters as the favorite. She is a bit on the ornery side after a unanimous-decision setback to Tatiana Suarez at UFC 238 last time out (June 8, 2019). In fact, this will be a “Battle of the Moms,” and the birth of her child is the reason she has been away from the octagon for so long.

DERN (+115) fought three times in 2020 since Ansaroff’s last fight, and she is a good value on the 2-way line at plus-money. Three of her past five fights have ended via submission wins, all in the first round.

Over/Under (O/U)

Each of the past four fights for Ansaroff have ended up going the distance, and just one of her seven fights at the UFC level have ended via stoppage.

Dern’s last fight, Dec. 12, 2020 at UFC 256, ended up going the distance against Virna Jandiroba. Dern predicted this fight will finish by way of submission over Nunes, and I believe her. As such, take NO (+130): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? as it’s hard to envision Ansaroff going all the way after such a long layoff. UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (+155) is also a worthwhile play for a little added value.
