Oregon signee Jackson Shelstad is turning heads at Nike Hoops Summit

Jackson Shelstad has all of the scouts talking at the Nike Hoops Summit, with some declaring him the best player on the floor.

He may technically be the lowest-rated player in the Oregon Ducks’ 2023 signing class, but it’s hard to find any player who will come to Eugene shouldering higher expectations than West Linn senior Jackson Shelstad.

The 4-star point guard has been a tour de force over the past several months, grabbing headlines throughout the high school basketball season and inching his way up the national recruiting rankings, where he now sits at No. 32 nationally. This past week at the Nike Hoops’ Summit in Portland, Oregon, Shelstad is once again making waves and dropping the jaws of many in attendance. Some are even questioning his national ranking, assured that he belongs in the conversation among the best players in the 2023 class.

With a star-studded group of players in Portland this weekend that includes Omaha Biliew (No. 11 player), Isaiah Collier (No. 1 player), Bronny James (No. 33 player), Jared McCain (No. 15 player), and Ja’Kobe Walter (No. 21 player), the fact that Shelstad is making the most noise is impressive.

Here’s some of the biggest buzz that we’ve seen on social media.

Full rosters are set for the 2023 Nike Hoop Summit

The best in U.S. boys and girls high school basketball now have matchups with the announcement of the World Teams.

The Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, will be the site of the 24th Nike Hoop Summit on April 8, where elite high school basketball players from the U.S. will take the hardwood against an international crop of talent.

This year’s event also features an inaugural tipoff for women’s the game, which will have Archbishop Mitty’s (Calif.) coach Sue Phillips leading the select group of top-tier American athletes.

While the U.S. rosters were announced in February, the details about the international squads remained unknown—outside of being approved by FIBA, the international basketball governing body.

But the full scope of what’s in store is now clear, with both World Select teams getting revealed on March 24.

Here’s a look at all four rosters.

Overall, the matchups are intriguing, an excellent barometer—albeit brief—to see how skillsets stack up from a worldwide perspective.

Will it be “USA all the way”?

If that’s not the case, it won’t be from a lack of experience: The women’s and men’s squads have a combined 26 gold medals in national team competitions;  the USA men currently hold a 16-7 head-to-head win total over the World Team.

Notre Dame commit J.J. Starling makes U.S. team for Nike Hoop Summit

A big month is coming up for a future Notre Dame player.

J.J. Starling, the most anticipated Notre Dame commit in years, is going to be very busy over the next month. In the last week of March, he will take part in the McDonald’s All-American Game in Chicago. A week-and-a-half later, he will get the opportunity to represent the U.S. in competition for the first time. That’s because he has been selected to play for his country in the Nike Hoop Summit, an annual game between the best U.S. players and the best international players ages 19 or younger.

Starling, who attends La Lumiere in La Porte and participated in a 2019 U.S. junior national minicamp, will be part of the first Nike Hoop Summit since 2019. COVID-19 has forced the event’s cancelation over the past two years. The international roster for the game, which is taking place in Portland, Oregon, will be announced later.

Starling is believed to be taking the roster spot of Cason Wallace, who signed a letter of intent with Kentucky in November.
