WATCH: Ohio State Football’s starting punter has a cannon of a leg

Ohio State Football’s starting punter has an absolute cannon for a leg and has been seen punting the ball 90-plus yards.

Ohio State Football‘s starting punter, Nick McLarty, can punt the ball far. While most Division 1 punters can do the same, not most can say that they can boot the ball 90-plus yards.

There’s a video that’s gone viral of McLarty kicking the ball that far, although it does appear he has some wind on his side meaning it wouldn’t be considered a world record in the Olympics. On the other hand, this isn’t the Olympics so we are mighty impressed.

For reference, the soccer field is 75 yards wide to help the distance make sense. It actually isn’t horizontal and labeled like a football field would be.

Regardless, check out this howitzer of a kick.

The true freshman has been named the starting punter. There were multiple players that had the option to start for Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes. Joe McGuire, Anthony Venneri, and Hadi Jaward were the other potential options.

McLarty won the start, and the 6-foot-7-inch stud is primed to play a key part in flipping the field for the Buckeyes this season.

Ryan Day names true freshman as starting punter for Buckeyes

The kid has a canon #GoBucks

We’re just about a week away from the 2024 edition of the Ohio State football season and now we know who will handle the punting duties for the Buckeyes. Ryan Day has named true freshman, Nick McLarty, as the starting punter for the season opener.

McLarty who stands at 6-foot, 7-inches, and has a canon attached to his hip. The Australian-born punter gained notoriety earlier in the year when he posted a video of himself bombing a punt 90 plus yards and out of an entire stadium.

The competition came down between McLarty, Joe McGuire, Hadi Jawad, and Anthony Venneri — a transfer from the University of Buffalo. Day shared in his press conference that the starting gig is just for right now and that the competition may go on to the coming weeks. As for now, McLarty is the guy.

With the offensive firepower the Buckeyes have, punts may be few and far between. But in the unlikely event the Ohio State offense should stall, McLarty could be a valuable weapon flipping the field.

McLarty will take over for Jesse Mirco who transferred to Vanderbilt earlier this year.

Watch Ohio State commit from Australia punt a ball 90 yards

He did what?! #GoBucks

Ryan Day is loading up at literally every position. Earlier today, Ohio State got word that it had received a commitment from Australian punter, Nick McLarty. The punter from down under doesn’t have a star rating but is a specimen of a young man standing at 6-7 and weighing 255 pounds. And apparently, he has a canon of a leg.

After posting his commitment to the Buckeyes, McLarty shared a video on his X account (formerly Twitter) showing just how strong of a leg he has as he booms a punt out of what appears to be a soccer stadium. McLarty estimated the kick went over 90 yards! Wowza! Ohio State may have just found a diamond in the rough on special teams.

McLarty made his decision rather quickly after visiting campus on Thursday, then giving his commitment on Friday. Holding offers from other schools such as Utah, McLarty ultimately decided Columbus was the place to be.

He’ll follow in the footsteps of other Aussie punters who’ve donned the Scarlet and Gray such as Cameron Johnston and Jesse Mirco who transferred to Vanderbilt earlier this year. McLarty will be one of three punters on the Ohio State roster competing for playing time this season.
