Texans say they have no interest in trading Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans say they have no interest in trading star quarterback Deshaun Watson

An old-fashion Tussle in Texas is setting up between Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson and team management.

Watson has asked for a trade. However, the team says it has no interest in granting his wish.

At a press conference to introduce head coach David Culley on Friday, new GM Nick Caserio said Watson is a Texan and he plans on it remaining that way.

“We want to reiterate our commitment to Deshaun Watson,” said Caserio, who came to Houston from the New England Patriots’ organization. “We have zero interest in trading the player.”

Culley, hired this week after 27 years as an NFL assistant, added his decision to take the Houston job was because he wants to coach Watson.

“He is a Houston Texan. I want him to be a Houston Texan,” the former Baltimore Ravens assistant said. “The reason I’m in this position today is because I know he’s going to be a Houston Texan.”

The issue is Watson wants out and the Texans had no choice but to come out and say they were unwilling to move the quarterback.

Had they said he was on the block, that would have been a massive loss of leverage in trade talks. In saying they don’t want to trade their star, the Texans can drive up the offer price … or at least hope they can.

What will be fascinating to watch as this plays out is whether Culley is able to soothe the differences between Watson, who threw for 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns on a 4-12 team, and the organization.

Defensive star J.J. Watt apologized to the quarterback after the final game of the season, saying the team had wasted his great year.

This is going to be one of the major storylines to follow through the offseason and one has to wonder whether it will resolve itself before the NFL Draft or could it carry on to the regular season?

Does Deshaun Watson have other options to leave the Texans?

Quarterback Deshaun Watson may have other options if he decides a trade isn’t how he leaves the Houston Texans.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract, which means he has veto power over any trade proposal the team presents to him — much like the power Jadeveon Clowney had in the 2019 offseason.

The Texans can’t just trade him anywhere and get the Christmas Day super spectacular of draft picks they want.

Similarly, the Texans technically don’t have to trade Watson; they can keep him under contract and tell him to lump it with new general manager Nick Caserio and new coach David Culley.

What are Watson’s options if the Texans don’t give in to his trade demands?

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, if Watson doesn’t show up to mandatory minicamp, presuming the NFL allows the offseason program to happen, he can be fined $95,877. Missing organized team activities is no problem as those workouts are considered voluntary.

If Watson holds out through training camp, they can fine him $50,000 per day of each day of training camp missed along with one-week salary for each preseason game missed. Watson’s one-week salary is $620,000.

If the 25-year-old decides that he has had enough and wants to retire, the Texans would have the right to collect $21.6 million from their former 2017 first-round pick. Furthermore, just because Watson retired doesn’t mean the Texans lose his rights. Should he un-retire, he would return back to the Texans.

Houston and Watson may have to work out their differences and get through 2021 together. The start to the post-Bill O’Brien era has not gone well for the Texans through the first month as Watson allegedly has not spoken with Caserio.

Report: Deshaun Watson has not spoken with new Texans GM Nick Caserio

Quarterback Deshaun Watson has not spoken with new Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio.

Communication is the foundation for any relationship. It is fair to say that without communication, there can’t be a relationship.

That is the situation the Houston Texans find themselves in as franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson reportedly has not spoken with new general manager Nick Caserio.

On Thursday, Watson’s intentions to leave the Texans and seek a trade became public.

Caserio publicly has state he wants to work with Watson.

“I think the most important thing for us is just to speak specifically to Deshaun,” Caserio told reporters on Jan. 8. “I’d say from afar the respect and administration that I have for him as a player and what he’s done for this organization is significant. He’s our quarterback. Quite frankly he’s a big part of the reason why over the last two seasons when we faced the Texans that New England came out on the losing side of the ledger. I think it’s important for all of us to take some time, and I think when the time is appropriate, we’ll have discussions with the players.

With Watson not taking any time to talk to Caserio, it does not bode well for the three-time Pro Bowler’s future with the team, and for the Texans, the future at quarterback is starting to look bleak.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson wants a trade: How we got here

See the timeline of how Deshaun Watson went from being committed to the Houston Texans to being committed to leaving the AFC South club.

The Houston Texans and quarterback Deshaun Watson have been on a rocky road that has culminated in the three-time Pro Bowler wanting out of the Bayou City.

Here is the complete breakdown from when Watson signed his contract extension all the way through his request for a trade being made public.

Eagles should do their due diligence on Deshaun Watson after he requests trade from the Texans

The NFL is a yearly arms race and if the Eagles really want to give Nick Sirianni the ultimate opportunity for success as a head coach, then Howie Roseman must do his due diligence on the Deshaun Watson situation in Houston.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media just reported that Watson has formally requested a trade out of Houston.

The Eagles organization likes to think of itself as a budding quarterback factory and landing a top-3 signal-caller would set the standard.

Even with the hiring of Sirianni, it’s unknown if the Eagles truly believe Carson Wentz is their franchise quarterback, but with lingering reports of the Eagles star wanting out, a swap of NFL stars could be just what the doctor ordered.

Wentz owns a home in the city of Houston, while the Texans’ star quarterback wants out amid franchise dysfunction.

Houston’s star signal-caller wants out and the potential haul could cost Philadelphia a couple of first-round picks plus a couple of second-round picks, and a Pro Bowl-caliber player.

With the salaries nearly matching up and Wentz still seething from his four-game benching, the Eagles, like 26 other teams around the NFL, could look to swap quarterbacks and picks for Deshaun Watson.

If the Eagles truly want a fresh start, the deal would allow Jalen Hurts the opportunity to continue to grow while learning behind Watson.

Jeffrey Lurie referred to both his quarterbacks as assets and Hurts could also fetch Philadelphia another second or third-round picks as they dive deep into a long-term rebuild.

Crazier things have happened, but the intrigue makes for an exciting offseason.

Report: Colts DC Matt Eberflus ‘early favorite’ for Texans job

The Houston Texans are reportedly interested in Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who is an “early favorite” for the job.

The Houston Texans are reportedly very interested in Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to fill their coaching vacancy.

According to Ben Volin, senior NFL reporter for the Boston Globe, the Texans were pleased with Eberflus’ recent interview with the club and he is considered to be an early favorite.

The Texans have familiarity with Eberflus as he has been the Colts’ defensive coordinator since 2018. Aside from the 2019 campaign when the Colts finished 7-9, Indianapolis has had a solid defensive unit that has complement Frank Reich’s offensive schemes and aggressiveness.

Eberflus is also someone that quarterback Deshaun Watson might like. In fact, after the Texans’ 27-20 loss to the Colts on Dec. 20, which was a rematch from the previous two weeks between the two sides, Watson caught up with Eberflus in the tunnel at Lucas Oil Stadium to find out how he effectively adapted to the Texans’ offense.

The 50-year-old from Toledo, Ohio, was previously with the Dallas Cowboys as their linebackers coach from 2011-17. In the 2012 season, Eberflus was running the defensive meetings for defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The other Ryan twin also employed Eberflus in the same capacity with the Cleveland Browns from 2009-10 under coach Eric Mangini.

Ranking the trade value of Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans have no intention to trade quarterback Deshaun Watson. But if they did, here are some offers worth considering.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract.

However, the uneasiness of the three-time Pro Bowler after the hiring of general manager Nick Caserio has the idea of trading Watson becoming and more thinkable.

If the Texans were to move on from Watson, they would be on the hook for $16.2 million in 2021 and then $10.8 million in 2022 before absorbing a more manageable dead money figure of $5.4 million in 2023. Caserio would have to choose wisely.

If the Texans were to trade Watson, here are a variety of trade packages Houston could look at.

Is Bills OC Brian Daboll no longer in consideration for the Texans’ job?

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Buffalo Bills won’t be interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Can the Houston Texans cross him off, too?

The Houston Texans may have to cross out one of their coaching candidates and zero in on another target.

According to the Bills Wire, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is turning down the Philadelphia Eagles interview and is deciding to return to the Bills as their offensive coordiantor.

Daboll is also on the verge of taking part in something historic, too. The Bills have never been in the AFC Championship Game since the 1993 NFL playoffs, which was also the last time the team qualified for the Super Bowl, their last of four consecutive appearances. If the Bills get to the Big Game alone, it will be celebrated and revered by Bills Mafia.

With Daboll possibly out of the action, it means there aren’t any enticing candidates that come from the Bill Belichick coaching tree, or have connections to general manager Nick Caserio, who was with the New England Patriots in a variety of capacities since 2001. The Texans may have to go in another direction.

Texans DE Charles Omenihu is excited to meet new general manager Nick Caserio

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu is excited to meet the team’s new general manager, Nick Caserio.

For the third time in as many seasons, Charles Omenihu is going to have a new general manager.

The former 2019 Houston Texans fifth-round pick spent time with Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle and expressed what he is looking forward to in new general manager Nick Caserio.

“It shows he knows how to win,” Omenihu said of Caserio’s six Super Bowl wins with the New England Patriots, where he was the director of player personnel. “He’s been around it. So,  and he’s no stranger to it. So, I mean, bringing that structure and order from a winning program or organization is what we need. I think he’s going to be good. I’m excited to meet him and talk to him, pick his brain — just someone who’s won six Super Bowls. He’s got a lot of knowledge.”

Omenihu was at the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in the Fifth Ward Monday as he was helping distribute 1,000 meals to residents in the community.

The 6-5, 280-pound defensive end provided 17 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, and two pass breakups for Houston through 15 games, five of which he started.

One of the areas Caserio will be looking to upgrade is edge defense, and one of the building blocks could be Omenihu, who will be entering his third year of his four-year contract with the Texans.

Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy cleared to interview with Texans

Bieniemy is set to interview with the Houston Texans on Monday.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is set to interview with the Houston Texans on Monday.

As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Texans will have a virtual interview with Bieniemy today. This wasn’t so easy to orchestrate due to the NFL’s anti-tampering policies, which previously would have prevented Bieniemy from interviewing until the Chiefs’ playoff run was finished.

The NFL hasn’t officially altered their policy, but they granted teams with vacancies permission to interview candidates like Bieniemy, only if his current club’s ownership would allow it. Kansas City, of course, granted Bieniemy the opportunity to interview with Houston.

The Texans’ failure to interview Bieniemy earlier was part of QB Deshaun Watson’s growing list of grievances with the team. Bieniemy came highly-recommended by Chiefs starting QB Patrick Mahomes. Now, Bieneimy will get his shot to interview with Houston’s new GM Nick Caserio.

This will be the sixth interview that Bieniemy has taken during this head-coaching cycle. Practically every other vacancy has since been filled while the Texans and Eagles remain the only two teams with head-coach openings. The Eagles had also requested an interview with Bieniemy so you can expect that interview will also happen soon unless they’ve already narrowed down their search.

Fans will certainly be concerned about Bieniemy taking an interview ahead of an important game. He didn’t let interviews get in the way of his preparation for the Cleveland Browns, so expect him to take AFC Championship Game preparations just as seriously.
