Steelers vs. Chargers injury update: QB Justin Herbert faces obstacle to play on Sunday

If Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert takes the field vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers, he’ll be restricted by an ankle injury.

If Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert takes the field on Sunday in the Pittsburgh Steelers home opener, he’ll be restricted by an ankle injury.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Herbert was “extremely limited” in practice on Thursday after getting banged up in the Chargers Week 2 victory over the Carolina Panthers. He’s listed as questionable heading into Pittsburgh.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has implemented a ground-heavy attack in L.A., highlighting the prowess of the NFL’s rushing leader, J.K. Dobbins. The change in the offensive scheme has lessened the need for Herbert to command the spotlight, so he might not be tasked with much in Week 3 anyway.

Herbert and Steelers quarterback Justin Fields are neck-and-neck with 274 to 273 passing yards, respectively, but Herbert has found the end zone three times to Fields’ one.

Former Pro Bowl WR on Bills starting 2-0: ‘Didn’t see this coming’

Former Pro Bowl WR on #Bills starting 2-0: ‘Didn’t see this coming’

The Buffalo Bills have been perfect through two weeks of the 2024 NFL season, and many didn’t know that the Bills still had it in them to be among the best in the league.

We’ve already seen multiple members of the national media express their shock and surprise at what they’ve seen the Bills do through two weeks.

The latest to pivot their stance on this year’s Buffalo Bills is former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson. Jackson joined Kay Adams on the “Up & Adams Show” to share his surprise at the performance of Buffalo so far this season:

“I honestly didn’t see this coming,” he said. “Obviously, I knew Josh Allen was a hell of a quarterback… [but] they let go of their whole defense, they let go of Stefon [Diggs], they let go of [Gabe] Davis… I mean it’s crazy. It’s mind-boggling to me how they’re playing.

“How you let go of your top two receivers, all these dudes… [Jordan] Poyer, [Micah] Hyde… you let go of all these dudes and y’all are playing lights-out football. It hurts me a little bit because this offseason I was on some media shows and I bashed them. I didn’t think they were gonna be good.”

Jackson surely wasn’t alone in dismissing the Bills’ chances this year. Many saw it as a “rebuild year”, and rightfully so given the changes made on the roster by the front office, but head coach Sean McDermott and the Bills team have always performed best when counted out.

Many have somehow forgotten the adversity the Bills overcame just last year. Through twelve games the Bills were 6-6, out of the playoff picture, and had just fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. Then, under the direction of McDermott and newly-promoted OC Joe Brady, the Bills rattled off five straight wins, finishing 11-6 and winning the AFC East for the fourth consecutive year.

So, it’s not Jackson’s fault that he completely overlooked the Bills. On paper, the offseason looked like a mess, but now the Bills have youth all over their starting offense and defense, and after just two weeks, the Bills are way ahead of schedule.

Many national media outlets already have the Bills among the very best in the league in their latest power rankings, some even as high number two in the NFL.

Jackson’s full segment on the Bills can be found in the clip below:

Roman Wilson reveals which Super Bowl champ he’s been watching to prepare for Steelers debut

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson has been watching film of Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Mike Evans to prepare for his rookie debut.

Sidelined with an ankle injury since July 30, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson has needed to prepare for the season in ways other than practice.

Film study has been Wilson’s primary focus.

“I watch a lot of film by myself, with coach Z [Zach Azzanni], trying to get better with my handwork, get a little more crafty,” Wilson told Steelers reporters on Thursday.
But the work doesn’t end there.
“I go home and watch film, watch receivers and try to emulate their game, try to emulate in my head and, whenever I get the opportunity, bring it out to the practice field.”
When asked who he’s been watching, Wilson didn’t hesitate.
“I’ve been watching a lot of Mike Evans. I just feel like his technique is very underrated. He’s played in the league and done so good for such a long time; why wouldn’t I want to be that guy.”
Wilson couldn’t be more right about Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans. Names like Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill, A.J. Brown and CeeDee Lamb are often mentioned when discussing the best in the game. But it’s five-time Pro Bowler Mike Evans who’s won a Super Bowl and is atop the active player leaderboard in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.
The Steelers desperately need a guy who wants to be like Evans. Pittsburgh’s receiving corps has accounted for just 243 yards and one touchdown; its only of the season.
If only it were as simple as inserting Wilson into the lineup. He missed the majority of training camp, the entire preseason, and has only practiced fully twice since regular season practice kicked off on Sept. 2.

3 key matchups for Raiders vs Panthers

3 key matchups for Raiders vs Panthers

At first glance, it would appear the Panthers don’t have a lot going for them. That may be true. But they’re still an NFL team with NFL players who can jump up and bite you if you’re not careful.

And the Raiders may be coming off an impressive comeback win against the Ravens in Baltimore, but that doesn’t mean they’ve clearly established themselves as some elite team. They still have to prove it over the season with their opponents collecting more and more game tape on them.

These matchups could play a major role in the outcome of this game.

CB Jack Jones vs WR Xavier Legette

Legette was the Panthers’ top pick in this year’s draft. He led the team in catches (4) in the opener, but didn’t see a target last week in a loss to the Chargers. Now the Chargers have benched Bryce Young in favor of Andy Dalton, which figures to at least awaken the pass game. This would, in turn, see Legette get some more targets as their best receiver.

Legette will face off against a fiery competitor in Jack Jones who has great hands as well to make Dalton pay for any mistakes.

TE Brock Bowers vs Xavier Woods/Jordan Fuller

Woods and Fuller are the safeties for the Panthers. They will switch off in trying to keep the Raiders phenom tight end under wraps. Bowers has 15 catches already this season and is proving himself to be a top target for Gardner Minshew. You can bet on any given play either Woods or Fuller will guarding Bowers.

DE Maxx Crosby vs T Taylor Moton

Moton will be tasked with trying to keep Crosby from wrecking this game. The veteran tackle is no slouch. This is his seventh season as the Panthers’ full time starting right tackle. And he’s never missed a game. So, it’s safe to say there isn’t a caliber of edge rusher in this league he hasn’t faced. Including last week when he faced Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. The only sack allowed was not on Moton, but Bryce Young for not stepping up into the pocket.

Andy Dalton will need at least a bit of time to try and find an open receiver. He can’t be worrying he’s going to get smacked in under two seconds on every play or running for his life all day. That’s what Crosby did to Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson the first two weeks. Last week against the Ravens, he went on to win AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Experts remain split on Steelers vs Chargers

The Steelers host the Chargers this week in an old-school matchup of undefeated teams.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers are two of the nine remaining undefeated teams in the NFL and they square off this week in the Steelers home opener this week.

This week’s game is a showdown between the two best defenses in the NFL and two teams who play smash-mouth football on offense. It’s going to be a game old-school fans will love.

This is also a game of two teams who match up very well with each other making this one a tough call despite the game being in Pittsburgh. The experts shared this sentiment as well. We looked to our friends at NFL Pick Watch to see which way they are leaning. NFL Pick Watch aggregates picks from all over the internet and puts them all in one spot.

According to NFL Pick Watch, 46 percent of the experts are taking the Steelers with 54 percent leaning toward the Chargers. It doesn’t get much closer than that.

Falcons to open Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof for SNF game vs. Chiefs

Falcons to open Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof for prime-time matchup vs. the Chiefs

The Atlanta Falcons don’t generally open the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium unless it’s a special occasion, however, Sunday night’s matchup against the Kanas City Chiefs meets the requirements. The defending Super Bowl champions are 2-0 this season and will look to stay undefeated when they come to Atlanta in Week 3.

The Falcons defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football thanks to a highly improbable fourth-quarter comeback orchestrated by Kirk Cousins and the offense. Now, the team must attempt to win back-to-back games with the entire country watching (including the Swifties).

With all that pressure, Atlanta could probably use some air. According to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium social media account, the Falcons will drop the stadium top for Week 3.

The Falcons are currently three-point underdogs entering Sunday’s game, but they should at least have health on their side. The Chiefs just placed star running back Isiah Pacheco on the injured reserve list. Plus, the team’s top free-agent addition, wide receiver Marquise Brown, will miss the entire season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Sunday night’s matchup kicks off at 8:20 p.m. ET inside a roofless Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Don’t forget to get your free hot dogs!

Steelers WR Roman Wilson describes ‘crazy experience’ with Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson will be on the opposing sideline of his former Michigan coach, L.A. Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh.

If Roman Wilson takes to the field for his rookie debut on Sunday, it’ll be something he’s never experienced for more than one reason.

Wilson, a third-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers this past draft, sustained an ankle injury on day five of training camp, delaying his first season as a pro.

The Steelers are taking on the Jim Harbaugh-coached Los Angeles Chargers in their 2024 home opener on Sunday.

Wilson spent four seasons under Harbaugh at Michigan, where he was a member of the 2023 championship-winning roster and logged 1,707 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Harbaugh, a one-time head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, produced three of the five most-productive offensive seasons in school history and led Michigan to back-to-back Big Ten Championships and College Football Playoff appearances.

Whether activated or not, Harbaugh will be on the opposing sideline for the first time in Wilson’s career.

“That hasn’t really crossed my mind, looking over the sideline and seeing my old coach, but maybe on game day, it’s going to hit me differently,” Wilson told Steelers reporters on Thursday. “I think that’s just such a crazy experience, my coach being on the other sideline. I just never thought that’d be a thing.”

Given that Wilson missed significant time during summer practice and the entire preseason, his integration into the offense won’t be easy. But it can’t be fast enough. The Steelers receiving corps has accounted for just 243 yards and one touchdown, Pittsburgh’s only of the season.

Bills’ Rasul Douglas on Christian Benford: ‘He’s got that nasty attitude’

Bills’ Rasul Douglas on Christian Benford: ‘He’s got that nasty attitude’

Buffalo Bills’ third-year cornerback Christian Benford has been impressive since getting his first opportunity in the league as a rookie in 2022, but this year he looks like one of the best all-around corners in the NFL.

The national outlets are starting to catch on, but the Bills’ locker room has always known what they had. Fellow Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas was the latest to praise the up-and-comer:

“He went to a basketball school… Villanova… so I don’t think they were looking for football players,” Douglas said after practice Wednesday. “Whenever he gets around a play he’s gonna make sure you know he’s around. He’s disciplined… he’s got good technique… he just likes playing football and likes competing. That’s the attribute you gotta have if you wanna get out there and get better, and he has that.”

After putting his name on the map in 2023, Benford looked elite in the first two weeks of 2024. According to PFF, he has allowed just a 40% catch rate and has posted the seventh-highest defense grade among all cornerbacks. He’s a big part of the reason why the Bills have three interceptions through two games (T-4 in the NFL), He has an interception of his own and also was closest in coverage as Ja’Marcus Ingram reeled in a deflection for his first-career INT.

Douglas has had his fair share of success in the NFL, too, so his words aren’t something to glance over. He has 19 interceptions in his 8-year career. Douglas is tied with Daron Bland and Justin Simmons for the most interceptions in the NFL since 2021.

The pair of cornerbacks is exactly what Sean McDermott looks for to play on the boundary of his defense: rangy, smart players who can read a QB’s eyes and also come up and tackle when needed.

Speaking of the coach, while complimenting Benford’s successes, he credits Douglas for them too–Both on and off the gridiron.

“It seems like they’ve formed a nice little bond off the field, as well,” McDermott said via video conference. “I think that’s important. Rasul’s been in the league a little bit longer than CB, and he can share some of his wisdom with CB and how things work, and the journey, right, of an NFL corner. That’s been interesting and fun to watch. I think it’s helped CB, as well, and maybe in some ways helped Rasul.”

2 ex-Broncos had perfect responses to Mel Kiper’s silly safety rant

Worried about two deep safeties? “Learn how to run the ball.”

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. went on a ridiculous rant this week the “Get Up” program about two-high safety schemes in the NFL.

“Don’t tell me you can’t have those safeties closer to the line of scrimmage than they are,” Kiper ranted. “I was at games thinkin, ‘Hey, two high? They’re out in outer space!’ I couldn’t even find ’em. They’re playing with nine guys! The other two, they’re so far back you don’t even know they’re part of the damn play! I’m telling you, we gotta change this thing.”

Kiper suggesting that the NFL should change its rules to not allow two deep safeties is an outrageous idea, and two former Denver Broncos players had perfect responses that were nearly identical.

“Hey [if] you don’t want two-high looks, run the ball,” former Broncos cornerback Chris Harris tweeted on Thursday. Ex-Denver guard Mark Schlereth tweeted the same sentiment:

Harris played for the Broncos from 2011-2019, helping the team win Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season. Schlereth played in Denver from 1995-2000, winning back-to-back Super Bowls in the late 1990s.

The Super Bowl champions are spot-on.

Cardinals LB Markus Bailey earns Pat Tillman Scout Team award

Bailey gets to wear the Pat Tillman No. 40 jersey in practice all week in Week 3.

After playing 60 games with four starts in four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, inside linebacker Markus Bailey signed with the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason hoping to earn a roster spot to at least contribute on special teams.

He played 950 special-teams snaps in those four seasons after being a seventh-round pick in 2020, and totaled 18 tackles in 2022 and ’23.

However, the talent ahead of him resulted in being cut in the roster reduction to 53, but a spot on the practice squad beckoned. That’s where Bailey has been so far this season and this week he’s worn a No. 40 jersey in practice this week as the Pat Tillman Scout Team Player of the Week.

“It’s definitely an honor considering everything that he’s known for and the history with his whole situation,” Bailey told Cards Wire Wednesday. “It’s an honor that your efforts are recognized even though you may not be on the active roster. It symbolizes doing your role, maximizing your role. And my role right now is to give our starting offense and special teams the best look that I can give.”

The jersey this week is a bit improved over the red one running Michael Carter wore the week before and Bailey noticed.

He said, “I think the white one is maybe a little bit nicer than the red one. It’s definitely an honor, kind of sweet. So, feels pretty good to get recognized for that. I’m super thrilled and super honored to be recognized for my efforts and continue to do what I can to help the team.”

Bailey, who was seven years old when Tillman was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004, still had awareness of the Tillman story before coming to Arzona.

“I’ve always known the name and I’ve known a little bit of the story and I knew enough about it,” he said. “I know that he’s someone that served our country and symbolizes someone that puts the work in. A gritty person, football guy through and through. I was always aware of him and then coming to the Cardinals this year, I became more aware and when you walk by that glass outside coming back into practice every day, you see the jersey and how everything’s kind of a testament to him.”

Head coach Jonathan Gannon, who picks the winner each week, emphasizes the importance of those players on the practice squad and whoever is doing the important work each week of providing the look for the first-team offense and defense going against what is expected from the opponent.

Bailey understands how crucial that can be.

He said, “When I’m out there, especially on high (tempo) days, just try to make plays and try to get them real fast looks and be physical for certain schemes that they’re trying to maybe isolate a linebacker and give a really realistic look, and go as hard as I can. So that those guys know what it feels like who they have to block and be able to be successful in their assignments.

“So, (it’s about) just going out there and just controlling what I can control and just giving the best effort that I can when I’m out there.”

It can also be a way for those players to show the coaches they are deserving of an elevation from the practice squad for games or be signed to the active roster at some point.

“It’s an opportunity for me to be able to go against our starting offense and make legitimate plays against them,” Bailey said. “So that I can show maybe the decision-makers that I can make plays against our starters too.”
