Texans have to figure out when the Titans are running bootlegs

The Tennessee Titans offense uses a lot of bootlegs, and also disguises them. The Houston Texans have to figure out when they are legitimate.

The Houston Texans have a challenge on their hands when they face the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at Nissan Stadium.

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has run play-action passes 53 times this season, tied with Matt Ryan for the fourth-most in the NFL. Given that the Titans run such a preponderance of play-action, the Texans defense will have to figure out when Tennessee is passing and when they are running it.

“I actually had a long conversation with [defensive end] J.J. (Watt) just this afternoon about if we can figure out exactly if we can tell when they’re running the boots and when they weren’t,” Texans defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver told reporters Thursday.

According to Weaver, the intricacy of the Titans’ offense is due to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

“Honestly, I have to give Arthur Smith and his coaching staff a tremendous amount of credit,” said Weaver. “They do a good job of making everything look the same. You’ve got to play it honest, otherwise that one time you climb for the boot and you guess, you’ve got Derrick Henry cutting it back where you’re supposed to be in that C gap, and he’s running it downhill into your secondary. I think you’ve got to play honest.”

In just four games, Henry has amassed the third-most rushing yards in the league with 376. Of those 376, 205 have come after contact, tied with Todd Gurley for the seventh-most in the NFL.

“They’ve got a very good scheme that’s caused problems for obviously a bunch of different defenses they’ve played at this point,” said Weaver. “We’ve just got to make sure we go out there and play disciplined football, everybody doing their job, playing the plays as we see them, playing honest and try to make the plays happen.”

The Texans will have to do something no one has in four tries: get a win over Tennessee, and for a 1-4 team, that could be a tall order.

Senio Kelemete forced Texans’ hand to play him more at left guard

Senio Kelemete has taken over the starting left guard spot for the Houston Texans. Tim Kelly says the veteran force their hand to play him more.

The Houston Texans had the same five offensive linemen returning as starters for the first time since 2011. That lasted for three games as the club went with Senio Kelemete at left guard in place of the second-year Max Scharping.

After playing just three special teams snaps in Week 1, Kelemete played 22 offensive snaps in Week 2 followed by 20 in Week 3. By the Week 4 game with the Minnesota Vikings at NRG Stadium, Kelemete had effectively replaced Scharping as the starter.

“He’s done a great job,” offensive coordinator Tim Kelly said. “Him and [left tackle] Laremy (Tunsil) have done a really good job solidifying that side of the line of scrimmage.”

Kelemete signed a one-year contract extension with the Texans that put him under contract through the 2021 season. Even though he had been relegated from a 14-game starter in 2018 to more of a reserve player in a year’s time, Kelemete kept his work ethic high.

“He came in and was physical every day,” Kelly said. “He came in with the right mindset, the right attitude. Put in the work. Didn’t say really anything, just came in and when he got his opportunity, he went out there and was productive. So, we continued to give him a little bit more and as that happened, he continued to be productive.”

The Texans offense went from 260 yards in Week 3 at the Pittsburgh Steelers to 386 against the Vikings. In last week’s 30-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the offense churned 486 yards with 129 rushing yards, the best of the season.

“He finally made it to the point where he kind of forced our hand and made us make a decision,” Kelly said. “Him and Laremy have been out there playing pretty well together.”

The Texans will need Kelemete and Tunsil to keep the left side of the line held together as Houston seeks to upset the 4-0 Tennessee Titans Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at Nissan Stadium.

Texans vs. Titans Thursday injury report: OLB Jacob Martin a full participant

The Houston Texans announced their Thursday injury report ahead of their Week 6 AFC South encounter with the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium.

The Houston Texans announced their second injury report of Week 6 ahead of their 12:00 p.m. CT Sunday showdown with the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium.

Outside linebacker Jacob Martin, who had been limited in Wednesday’s practice with an ankle injury, was a fully participant on Thursday.

Tight end Jordan Akins (concussion/ankle), inside linebacker Dylan Cole (knee), inside linebacker Peter Kalambayi (hamstring), Buddy Howell (hamstring), and left tackle Laremy Tunsil (elbow) were limited participants in practice.

Houston had no one who did not practice.

Fantasy football gamble of the week: Week 6

With four teams on the bye, and plenty of injured stars, fantasy footballers must be willing to go big more than ever.

Every week, at least one player becomes my fascination of whether he’s worthy of a fantasy football start or bench The decision can be a mental wrestling match, but for the purpose of brevity, only one player can be chosen as the fantasy football gamble of the week.

The best fantasy football gamble for Week 6

Tracking my predictions: 2-2-1
Win: Player produces ≥ 80% of projected fantasy points
Loss: Player produces >80% of projected fantasy points
Tie: Player is ejected or leaves with an injury

Welp, so far my predictions have been either really good or downright awful. The two that were right were so much better than what I had predicted, those guys likely won games for owners. On the other hand, the pair that were wrong were laughably bad. This is why they’re gambles, though. Some will miss their mark by a wide margin, and the best one can do is learn from it and move forward. So, that’s what we’ll do heading into Week 6…

Detroit Lions  RB D’Andre Swift at Jacksonville Jaguars

This week, I really wanted to include Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabriel Davis as my pick, but his value completely depends on the health of John Brown (calf), and this being a Monday night game made me shy away. There’s too much volatility for recommending a player whose path to playing time is determined well after gamers are required to set their lineups. In the event Brown sits again, get Davis into lineups … I won’t track him as part of my overall recommendations.

Swift ranks as an RB2 consideration for me this week, because the Jaguars have an all-around shaky defense of his position. The Lions come back from their bye week, and one has to presume they spent extra time going over the game plan, but it’s the Lions, so, yeah, let’s not bank on that being the case.

[lawrence-related id=67503]

What one should expect is more Swift. He has a month under his belt as an NFL rookie without a formal offseason, and we’ve seen enough good mixed in with the bad to give him some credit. The Lions more or less have moved on from Kerryon Johnson at this point, and the only way Adrian Peterson is a threat is if the ball is inside of the 5-yard line. Swift also has value in the red zone, though, and his versatility as a receiving option is crucial.

The Jaguars have permitted running backs an average of 6.2 receptions (10th most) for 43.8 yards (14th) in five weeks. Two of those catches have scored, which translates to being the eighth-highest rate. While Swift is less likely to see work around the stripe as a runner, it’s not out of the question, especially if the offense is ready to begin a transition to him as the featured weapon in the backfield. I cannot say with confidence that will happen, but I’ve been encouraged by his ability to produce with limited work, which suggests Swift will be fine even if this isn’t the week he sees significantly more touches.

Additionally, it’s the first matchup he has faced that has been favorable. Swift has posted at least 11.3 PPR points in three of his four games in spite of having faced tough opponents, so the gamble here really is how much more will he produce. Jacksonville has yielded 104.2 rushing yards a game (11th) and four rushing TDs in five outings. Just two weeks ago, Joe Mixon enjoyed a breakout game based on versatility, and we saw the same with Nyheim Hines in Week 1.

My projection: 9 attempts, 48 yards, 1 TD, 4 receptions, 44 yards, 1 TD (21.2 PPR points)

DE J.J. Watt is trying to get younger Texans to understand urgency earlier in their careers

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is playing with more urgency in his 10th season, a concept he tries to impart on younger players.

J.J. Watt is an empathetic man.

Though the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year imparts on his younger teammates the significance of playing with urgency earlier in their careers, he understands why it sometimes doesn’t stick. After all, the Houston Texans defensive end was the same way his first few seasons as the club’s first-round pick in 2011.

“As a young guy in this league, you think you have a long time and you think that, obviously, you win a divisional title and you think, ‘maybe it’s next year,'” Watt said. “In my first two years down here, we won our first-ever division title. We won our first-ever playoff game and we made it to the second round. Then the next year you go 12-4 and you’re like, ‘Okay, we’re moving in the right direction.’

“And then boom, next year was 2-14. Then obviously the past six or seven years we’ve had division titles but not much past that. It’s very, very difficult in this league. The sense of urgency always has to be there.”

The Texans are at 1-4 and face the undefeated Tennessee Titans on the road at Nissan Stadium. Heading into Week 6, Watt is simply trying to win a game, not teach lessons at the moment.

“I want to win one game,” said Watt. “I think that’s when you have success is when you realize that’s the focus, not the biggest picture. I think you have to take those one at a time and sometimes you can get caught up in looking at the big picture and forget about the little things, the fundamentals and the details that help you win the games that get you to that point.”

There is more sand at the bottom of Watt’s career, much like the Texans’ playoff chances. If the Texans can get a win over the Titans, it should expand their opportunity to get back in the playoffs, where Watt can get back to impart the sense of urgency on his younger teammates.

Reviewing the Browns unofficial depth chart vs. Steelers

The unofficial depth chart vs. the Steelers is out

The Cleveland Browns released their unofficial depth chart for the Week 6 matchup with the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers. The depth chart is indeed unofficial, but the Kevin Stefanski regime has played it closer to the reality than a lot of other coaching staffs tend to these days.

On offense, the most interesting order is at tight end. David Njoku is still TE3 behind Austin Hooper and Harrison Bryant. Njoku played well in his return to the field in Week 5 but he remains lower on the depth chart than Bryant. The fourth-round rookie has also impressed with his receiving ability.

As for the defense…

The only real questions are at linebacker and the pecking order in coordinator Joe Woods’ rotation. Second-year players Sione Takitaki and Mack Wilson remain on the starter lines, along with B.J. Goodson. Veteran Malcolm Smith played more in the Week 5 win over the Colts (37 snaps) than Takitaki (15) and Wilson (19) combined and was on the field for most of the second half.

There is no change in the projected starting safeties. Ronnie Harrison started in Week 5 for the injured Karl Joseph and played the best game of any safety for the Browns all season. Harrison remains behind Joseph on the depth chart, however. He is battling a concussion of his own that leaves his availability for Sunday in question.
