That means we get Detroit Lions football on Saturday, and it’s a game with serious playoff implications. The 7-7 Lions visit the 5-9 Panthers, who, despite their lowly record, actually control their own playoff destiny; if Carolina wins out, they win the NFC South.

As we hit the Christmas weekend, most of the games will be played on Saturday, forcing teams into short weeks of preparation. This week, we pick one of the hottest fantasy players in the league to score a touchdown (again), a Pro Bowl quarterback not to hit the Over a high number despite two huge weeks, and a running back, wide receiver and tight end to all go Over their respective O/U numbers.

Texans vs. Titans: Time, TV schedule and streaming info for Week 16

The Houston Texans take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 16. Find out how to catch all of the action from Nissan Stadium.

The Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans have been headed in opposite directions the entire season, but now they will cross paths one last time to complete the 2022 series.

The Texans are well on their way to securing the No. 1 overall pick with their 1-12-1 record. What would a win over the Titans hurt given that Houston is a game and a half ahead of the nearest team in the 2023 NFL draft order?

For the Titans, a loss to the Texans would really hurt as they are 7-7 and on a four-game losing streak. Once thought to be as in command on the AFC South, the Jacksonville Jaguars are nipping at the Titans’ heels with a 6-8 record. If the Titans lose the next two games, and Jacksonville wins their next two contests, it sets up Week 18 for a winner-take-all scenario for the division.

A win over Houston completes the series sweep and helps Tennessee avoid any potential showdown with the Jaguars in January.

Houston will get to see Malik Willis again as Ryan Tannehill is out with an ankle injury. The Texans will deploy Davis Mills and their “two quarterback system,” which means Jeff Driskel will also see some action.

The biggest question mark of the contest: can the Texans defense slow down Derrick Henry in any way? The two-time NFL rushing champion has generated 200-plus rushing yards against Houston in his past four games against the Texans.

Lions elevate S Brady Breeze and TE Garrett Griffin for Week 16

Lions elevate S Brady Breeze and TE Garrett Griffin for Week 16

The Detroit Lions, as they do most every week, bolstered the depth chart a little in advance of Saturday’s game. Safety Brady Breeze and tight end Garrett Griffin were elevated from the team’s practice squad to the active roster for Detroit’s Week 16 game against the Carolina Panthers.

The moves correlate to the Lions injury report. Safety DeShon Elliott and fullback Jason Cabinda have been ruled out for the game. Breeze can help provide depth in the secondary and on special teams, while Griffin is the closest thing to a fullback the Lions have to replace Cabinda.

The Lions departed early for Charlotte due to the inclement weather.

Prince’s NFL Player Props: Derrick Henry, Travis Kelce and more Week 16 picks

The best NFL Week 16 player prop bets.

It’s always risky picking against star players doing star-player things, even when all the numbers and trends point towards an off week. So I only have myself to blame for my first sub-.500 performance since Week 6.

Taking the unders on Saquon Barkley and Nick Chubb last week just wasn’t wise. As far as Kirk Cousins’ under, I don’t regret that at all. It looked genius for about a half until the Colts decided to turn into the Little Giants.

But whatever, lesson learned. I’m going heavier on overs this week, with a couple big names sprinkled in for insurance. Let’s get it.

Week 15: 2-4

2022 record: 37-46

The 5 best bets for NFL Week 16

The smartest locks for Week 16 NFL betting action.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around the NFL (because the weather outside is frightful). This has led to some of the lowest Over/Under numbers in recent memory.

This week, we take three teams that need a win over inferior opponents to solidify their playoff stock and the Over in two games – one for two teams used to playing outside late in the season and the other with the highest O/U of the week.

Texans coach Lovie Smith reveals why rookie LB Christian Harris has excelled

Houston Texans rookie linebacker Christian Harris has shown progress throughout the season, and coach Lovie Smith knows why.

Christian Harris had a productive game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The third-round linebacker from Alabama generated 13 combined tackles and joined fellow rookie, safety Jalen Pitre, as the only rookie duo this season to each produce 10-plus tackles in a game.

According to Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith, there is a reason why Harris, who struggled initially in his rookie campaign, is starting to look more seasoned.

“Reps get you better,” Smith said. “Play time, game time, gets you better. Just being out there.”

Harris was on injured reserve and didn’t get to see the field until Oct. 23 against the Las Vegas Raiders. The 6-2, 232-pound linebacker had a paltry tackle among the 38 snaps he played in the 38-20 loss at Allegiant Stadium.

However, Harris began to get more snaps over the coming weeks, and the results picked up.

“It’s hard to just put a player out there and expect them to play at a certain level early on,” said Smith. “But, the more they play, the better they get, and I think that will be the case, not for just Christian Harris, with all of our guys.”

Since Nov. 13 against the New York Giants, Harris has played at least 60 snaps a game on defense — save for Nov. 27 at the Miami Dolphins when an injury limited him to 15.

With the Texans’ final three games ahead of them, the defense is starting to take shape, and Harris is one of the centerpieces in the linebacking corps.

“We’re kind of locked in now with who we’re playing at all the positions,” said Smith. “Again, we think we’ll be the healthiest we’ve been going into a game, especially defensively. Hopefully that will pay off.”

The Texans visit the Tennessee Titans Christmas Eve to conclude their season series. On Oct. 30, Harris’ second game of his career, he logged seven combined tackles on 58 snaps.

Three keys to a Detroit Lions victory over the Carolina Panthers

Our Max Gerber breaks down the keys for a Lions victory in Charlotte in Week 16

The Detroit Lions have been on a hot streak lately, winning six of their last seven games. Now they’re set to face the much improved Carolina Panthers on Christmas Eve.

The Panthers are starting to come into their own over the past few weeks, and while they’re still one of the worst performing offenses in the league, nobody can ignore the progress they’ve made recently.

So with a tough-fought game on the horizon, here are three things the Lions will have to do to secure a win against Carolina:

1: Shut down the run game

The numbers don’t lie: in every game that the Panthers have won this season, they have relied heavily on their stable of running backs to carry their offense. All five of their victories this year were achieved with 145 or more yards on the ground.

While one of those wins was when they still had Christian McCaffrey, their other four wins came from the successful utilizations of running backs D’Onta Foreman, Chuba Hubbard, and Raheem Blackshear along with wide receiver Laviska Shenault.

The Lions have been very successful this season in forcing teams to abandon their run games completely. In all seven of their wins, no opposing running back had more than 57 yards on the ground. Even in their losses, only two running backs ran for over 100 yards against Detroit.

Every key run defender for Detroit is healthy and ready to go for Saturday’s game. Having Alim McNeill and Isaiah Buggs’ collective 620 pounds on the interior defensive line will force outside runs to players like Aidan Hutchinson and Malcolm Rodriguez, who have been instrumental in shutting down running backs all year.

2: Attack the middle of the field

Carolina’s secondary has struggled against passes to slot receivers all season. Luckily, Detroit has one of the best slot players in the league with Amon-Ra St. Brown.

St. Brown has been the best offensive weapon for Jared Goff over the past two years and should continue his success on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are allowing an average of 51 yards receiving from the slot per game, but that average is very misleading. Their successes in defending the middle of the field vary heavily from game to game. If Detroit can consistently attack with St. Brown, who is averaging 74.9 yards receiving per game, Carolina will be forced to defend the middle of the field while leaving deep threats like Jameson Williams and DJ Chark wide open.

3. Put the pressure on Darnold

Carolina quarterbacks have been sacked an average of three times per game over their nine losses. Across all 14 games played, there were only five times where they didn’t allow a multi-sack performance.

Detroit has one of the most aggressive and productive defensive lines in the league right now. Rookies Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston have a combined 12 sacks this season and Romeo Okwara is coming off a great two-sack performance.

Even role players such as John Cominsky and Benito Jones have made their presences known when rushing the passer, meaning Carolina’s offensive line has their work cut out for them.

If Detroit wants to win this game, they’ll have to send pressure consistently onto Sam Darnold and force him to panic or step out of the pocket. Either way, the Lions’ defenders have proved they’re capable of forcing turnovers in those kinds of situations.
