How can the Texans get a first-round bye?

The Houston Texans are currently not in the race to gain a first-round bye. However, they can be if certain things for their way.

With a 7-4 record, the Houston Texans’ odds of obtaining a first-round bye are slim. So slim, in fact, that Football Outsiders gives them a 0.1% chance of claiming the No. 1 seed and 2.2% chance to get the No. 2 one. However, there is a chance.

For the Texans to get that precious first-round bye, defeating the 10-1 New England Patriots — who possess the top seed — on Sunday is a must. They also must root for the Los Angeles Rams, who face the second-seed Baltimore Ravens (8-2) on Monday.

Baltimore then must lose to the hands of the 10-1 San Francisco 49ers next Sunday.

If Houston defeats the Patriots and the NFC West dominates the Ravens, the seeding would go as so:

  1. Patriots (10-2)
  2. Ravens (8-4)
  3. Texans (8-4)
  4. Chiefs (8-4)

Let’s assume the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Oakland Raiders.

The Ravens hold the tiebreaker over the Texans if both are 8-4. Houston has the same over the Kansas City Chiefs.

From there on, the Ravens must drop a game on a relatively easy schedule post-49ers. The most glaring possibility of that happening comes in Week 14 when they travel to Buffalo to face the 8-3 Bills.

Say the Bills defeat the Ravens, Baltimore would be, at the time, 8-5. If the Texans were to beat the hapless Denver Broncos in the same week, after defeating the Patriots, they would stand at 9-4. No matter if Kansas City wins, Houston stays on top if they have the same record.

The Texans would not be able to rest at 9-4. They must win-out, meaning they would have to beat the Tennessee Titans twice and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sandwiched in-between the divisional bouts. If so, Houston would finish at 12-4.

If the Texans finish 12-4, they could gain the advantage of the first-round bye. However, they need help. The Ravens must drop three games, which may not happen considering their talent. As for the Patriots, they must completely fold by losing four of their next five — not a Bill Belichick move.

In culmination, the Texans’ only chance to gain that precious first-round bye stands within running the table and the Ravens choking away their second-seed. Houston stands at a 0.1% chance for the top-seed and 2.2% one for the second-seed for a reason. It’s going to be tough to avoid the wildcard round.

Sheldon Richardson really hopes Mason Rudolph starts for the Steelers in Week 13

The look on Richardson’s face when he’s asked why he wants Rudolph to play is one of the most honest–and hilarious–expressions you’ll ever see from an NFL player.

Count Browns defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson among those who really want to see Mason Rudolph back at the helm of the Pittsburgh Steelers when the two teams meet in Week 13. Richardson gave a classic answer when asked about it after the Browns’ win over the Miami Dolphins.

While Cleveland was pounding Miami, Rudolph got benched after his poor play led to the Steelers trailing the winless Cincinnati Bengals. He was replaced by Devlin Hodges, who quickly rallied Pittsburgh to a win. That was a hot topic among the Cleveland media in the locker room and a question posed to Richardson.

After initially dismissing the question, the big defensive lineman returns to it quickly.

“I hope he plays, I hope he plays,” he says.

He’s asked the natural follow-up question — why?

“Did you see him play last game?”, Richardson deadpans incredulously.

Steelers vs Browns Week 13 kickoff moved up to avoid drama

The NFL might be avoiding a repeat of the last time the Steelers and Browns played.

The NFL has decided to move the Pittsburgh Steelers Week 13 rematch with the Cleveland Browns to the 1 p.m. timeslot as opposed to the national game at 4:25 p.m. on December 1 as reported by multiple sources including Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac.

And I think we all understand why this happened. After the debacle at the end of the last game between these two teams, the NFL would probably be happier if these two teams played at some high school field in Pennsylvania where there is no access to cameras or the internet.

But before the Steelers get to this one Pittsburgh needs to focus on traveling to Cincinnati and beating the winless Bengals. Then they can bring the Browns to Pittsburgh to exact some revenge.

Browns-Steelers rematch in Week 13 moved to 1 p.m. kickoff

The game was scheduled for 4:25 p.m. but has been moved up

The hotly anticipated rematch between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13 will kick off earlier than expected.

The Browns and the NFL announced the game in Pittsburgh on Dec. 1 will kick off at 1 p.m. ET. It was originally scheduled as a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff. The game will remain as a CBS broadcast.

No official reason has been given for the time change. However, given the heated ending to the Week 11 Browns win in Cleveland, the earlier time slot takes away some of the prominence of the game. The NFL is likely trying to minimize the spotlight on Mason Rudolph’s rematch against a Browns team and national fan reaction that very strongly feels he instigated the chaotic violence in FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday night.

Two AFC games remain in the late-afternoon window, with the Chargers at Denver and the Raiders playing the Chiefs in AFC West matchups in Week 13.

USA TODAY Sports Network’s NFL Week 11 game previews, predictions

The USA TODAY Sports Network previews the Week 11 games, including the important Texans-Ravens and Patriots-Eagles matchups.

Week 11 of the NFL season kicked off Thursday night with a game that won’t soon be forgotten.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t because the Steelers-Browns game — won by Cleveland, 21-7 — was compelling in a competitive sense. Instead, it was because of what transpired in the final seconds, when Browns defensive end Myles Garrett attacked Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph with a helmet.

Hopefully, the remaining 13 games on this week’s schedule will be more competitive and less barbaric. With that in mind, the USA TODAY Sports Network previews the remaining 13 games on this week’s slate — with point spreads, game times, TV info, predictions and keys to the game for each team.

(The Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans have a bye this week.)

TV: 1 p.m. ET Sunday, Fox

Records: Cowboys 5-4, Lions 3-4-1

Line: Cowboys by 3½

Cowboys’ keys: Ride RB Ezekiel Elliott to riches. The run game success also helps QB Dak Prescott get into favorable downs and distances to attack downfield.

Lions’ keys: Getting both WRs Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones hot at the same time would be a major boost. They tend to alternate as top weapons instead of having strong games together.

Who wins? The Lions’ defense is no match for Elliott and the Cowboys’ strong offensive line. Cowboys 34, Lions 28
