Steelers center J.C. Hassenauer visits with Giants

J.C. Hassenauer visited the Giants on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers chose not to tender center J.C. Hassenauer, leaving him to sign with any team he chooses. According to ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan, Hassenauer visited the New York Giants on Wednesday.

The Giants currently don’t have a viable starting center on the roster and Hassenauer is a legitimate starter in this league. During his time with Pittsburgh, he has had seven opportunities to start and played well. Hasssenauer was an RFA last offseason as well but was tendered and he signed it to play in the 2022 season.

Pittsburgh has dedicated a great deal of resources to rebuilding the interior offensive line this offseason. The Steelers signed Nate Herbig and Isaac Seumalo as free agents and Herbig’s experience at center gave Pittsburgh the opportunity to move on from Hassenauer.

Steelers GM Omar Khan scouts prospects at HBCU Legacy Bowl and Combine

GM Omar Khan is in charge of the NFL draft for the first time.

For the first time since 2009, the Pittsburgh Steelers head into an offseason without the leadership of Kevin Colbert. Omar Khan has replaced Colbert as general manager and is already scouting potential prospects for the 2023 NFL draft.

The HBCU Legacy Bowl and Combine are in full swing this week and they posted the pic below showing Khan scouting prospects as they prepare for the game.

Khan took over for Colbert after the 2022 NFL draft so this will be his first draft under his control. Pittsburgh also added assistant general manager Andy Weidl who was formerly with the Philadelphia Eagles. Khan has been the salary cap guru of the Steelers for many seasons and Weidl is an expert on roster building so the two should work well together.

The HBCU Legacy Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, February 25 and will be broadcast on the NFL Network.

4-Down Territory: Discussing the NFL’s most important topics

Each week on “4-Down Territory,” Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling discuss the NFL’s most important topics.

Each week on “4-Down Territory,” Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar, and Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire and Draft Wire, agree (and disagree) on the NFL’s most pressing topics.

This week’s points of discussion:

  • If the Giants are ready to move on from general manager Dave Gettleman, are they wise to give organizational control to Joe Judge, who has a 10-17 record in less than two full seasons?
  • Why has the NFL turned from a total passing league to a league in which running backs matter again, and why are hybrid threats like Deebo Samuel and Cordarrelle Patterson making defenses think too much?
  • Last week, Doug and Luke pointed to the Panthers and Eagles as teams with records under .500 that presented real threats down the stretch. After both teams got embarrassed last Sunday, are those teams still on the radar?
  • And which teams currently in playoff contention could start to fade as things get real in December?

4-Down Territory: Going over the NFL’s most important topics

In “4 Down Territory,” Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling discuss the NFL’s most important subjects.

Every week in “4-Down Territory,” Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire and Draft Wire go over the things you need to know about, and the things you need to watch, in the NFL right now.

This week, Doug and Luke discuss:

  1. Why NFL officiating is so bad, and how the league can (and should) fix it;
  2. Which team that was upset last week should be the most worried about their postseason prospects;
  3. In a very muddled picture, which team is the AFC’s best coming into Week 11, and…
  4. Whether Patrick Mahomes is really “back,” or whether the Raiders give Mahomes the perfect defense to light it up last Sunday.

Falcons LB Deion Jones relives game-clinching INT vs. Saints

The Falcons gave middle linebacker Deion Jones a long-term extension in 2019 because he’s a perfect fit for the modern NFL game.

The Falcons gave middle linebacker Deion Jones a long-term extension in 2019 because he’s a perfect fit for the modern NFL game.

Jones is fast, physical and exceptional in coverage. No play better showcases this than his leaping interception of Drew Brees in the red zone to seal a win over the Saints back in 2017.

Atlanta’s young play-maker recently relived the incredible game-saving pick for the team’s official website. Check out this awesome Falcons moment, as described in Jones’ own words below:

Watch: The Lions behind the scenes at the Senior Bowl

The Detroit Lions media department continues its “Road to the Draft” video series, with a new perspective, going behind the scenes at the Senior Bowl.

The Detroit Lions media department has put out a series of videos based on the Lions “Road to the Draft”, and so far, the videos we have seen — like being mic’d up at Senior Bowl practices, and coach Matt Patricia mic’s up during the Senior Bowl game — have been mostly from the coaches’ point of view. But this video is different.

In this video, the Lions’ media department shifted away from traditional mic’d up videos and presented a narrated video reminiscent of an NFL Films documentary.

The video opens by setting the table for the Lions offseason, showing clips from general manager’s Bob Quinn’s end of the year press conference and coach Matt Patricia’s opening day Senior Bowl press conference.

At the 4:55 mark, we get our first offseason interview with Kyle O’Brien the vice president of player personnel, who is one of Quinn’s top advisors. O’Brien overviews how the Lions scouts begin draft prep and how they’re able to extend their prospect research in the Senior Bowl setting.

Roman Phifer, a former NFL linebacker and current Lions’ area scout, and Lance Newmark, director of player personnel (another of Quinn’s top advisors), expand on O’Brien’s ideas, discussing the advantages of learning about players in this environment.

The next segment focuses on blending the new Lions coaches with the old, showing candid interactions between Patricia and new coordinators Cory Undlin (defense) and Brayden Coombs (special teams). The film room discussion between coaches was very fun to watch.

The video concludes with a look at the game. You can watch the entire 22 minutes video below:
