NFL training camp updates July 27: Joe Burrow tweaks his calf, Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s (chef’s kiss) catch

A big of high profile injuries, one heck of a Jaxon Smith-Njigba catch, and a former top 10 draft pick retires after 6 seasons.

The NFL’s Hall of Fame Game is six days away. That means our long, arduous football desert — stretching from the USFL’s championship game July 1 to the real thing’s preseason opener August 3 — is nearly over.

It also means training camps across the league have begun, giving coaches, fans and journalists a look at their local teams after an offseason filled with roster building. While these practices may only be a preamble to the pages in the playbooks that define Super Bowl wins, they still set the tone for the upcoming season while giving a gridiron-starved nation something to grab onto in the sleepiest summer months.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at yesterday’s biggest training camp developments, starting with injury scares that could throw a wrench in AFC title plans for Cincinnati and Miami.

Here are the training camp report dates for all 32 NFL teams

Every team begins its hard work for the 2023 season this week.

While NFL teams have their offseason training programs, there is nothing quite like the demanding grind of training camps.

Most often, with the sun beaming on a hot practice field, players are expected to bring their absolute best. They’re tested physically through challenging practices and mentally by learning, re-learning, and polishing up the complexities of several-inch thick playbooks. And by the end of it, leaders of every team have to cut down their roster to a “regular-season” version.

Rest assured, this summer will be no different as a daunting obstacle for the players. But I suppose that’s the point of camp: preparing properly for a 17-game NFL season. You can find when your team will fire up its training camp journey this week by expanding the tweet below via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Note: Many teams have started having their players trickle in, especially rookies — who usually report a week early anyway.

Can you smell that? It’s the sound of NFL football, which is now only … several weeks away! Training camps starting up everywhere are a great sign of what’s to come soon.

No more training camp in Richmond for the Commanders

The Commanders’ affiliation with Richmond is officially over.

The Washington Commanders will no longer hold training camp in Richmond.

“That ship has sailed,” said Richmond Economic Development Authority board chair John Molster, per Michael Phillips of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “There are no plans for them to come back for the camp.”

Washington first started holding training camp in Richmond back in 2013 and remained through 2019. In 2020 during COVID-19, the team returned to its headquarters in Ashburn for camp. In 2021, head coach Ron Rivera returned for one week. The Commanders were back in Ashburn full-time last summer.

The land, which is located behind the Science Museum of Virginia, presents an outstanding development opportunity for the capital city. Unfortunately, due to the deal Richmond’s former mayor signed, taxpayers will still pay $700,000 annually until 2033.

On the Washington side, former team president Bruce Allen negotiated the deal due to his political connections in the state. It was a deal both sides would regret later. Under that deal, the city paid the team $500,000 annually for eight years.

Longtime Commanders beat reporter and current Team 980 radio host Chris Russell said it best with the following tweet:

Owner Daniel Snyder agreed to sell the Commanders to Josh Harris in May, and a vote to approve the sale by other NFL owners is expected on July 20. Washington’s deal with Richmond will be a distant memory with so many changes on both sides.

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell shines in the final preseason game

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell got the opportunity to play the entire final preseason game and did not disappoint.

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback [autotag]Sam Howell[/autotag] shined in the final preseason game.

Howell had the opportunity to close out the preseason for the Commanders and did not hold back in the passing or rushing game. The rookie quarterback out of UNC showed Washington fans what Tar Heel faithful already knew, his ability to use his feet to move the chains.

Howell rushed for 62 yards on eight carries, for an average of 7.8 yards. The passing attack was also solid, completing 24 out of 35 passes for 280 passing yards and one touchdown. The one downside of the Saturday game was Howell seeing the turf a lot, being on the receiving end of five sacks and 12 quarterback hits.

The same sort of damage Howell took at UNC cant be sustainable on the NFL level, and the issue of holding onto the ball too long needs to be addressed.

Howell’s strong outing put the league on notice but was not enough to get the victory, as Washington fell short in the 17-15 nail-biter. As it stands, quarterback Carson Wentz is the starter, with Taylor Heinicke playing back up and Howell set as a third string. However, a few slip-ups could offer Howell the opportunity to see the field in the regular season.

Chicago Bears release WR Dazz Newsome

The Chicago Bears have waived Dazz Newsome one season after drafting the wide receiver in the 6th round of the NFL draft.

After spending just one season with the Chicago Bears, wide receiver [autotag]Dazz Newsome[/autotag] has been waived.

Wednesday morning, the Bears waived Newsome, making the Tar Heel a free agent. Newsome was drafted in the sixth round by the Bears in 2021 to help their depleted wide receiver position.

This marks the second time that the speedy wide receiver was waived by Chicago. He was released last year before training camp after sustaining a broken collarbone injury. However, after clearing waivers he was brought back onto the Bears practice squad. Newsome did see some regular season action for Chicago, catching two passes out of five targets in three games.

Newsome appeared in both preseason games for Chicago this season, finishing with two receptions, 27 receiving yards, and one touchdown. The Bears did attempt to use Newsome as a punt returner in both games, muffing one punt in the process.

It will be interesting to see where Newsome lands, as the age and speed would be too hard to pass up on.
