NFL trade deadline: 6 players 49ers should look to acquire

6 players the #49ers should kick tires on at the trade deadline:

A team as loaded as the 49ers might be all done dealing ahead of the NFL trade deadline. They added defensive end Randy Gregory from the Broncos and look mostly set up and down the roster.

Typically a team like that would be a prime candidate to lay low at the deadline, especially considering how expensive the roster already is. With a league-high $39,962,048 in cap space and an abundance of draft capital though, San Francisco could be players for virtually any player that hits the trade market.

We ran through some of the players that may potentially be available and picked out six that the 49ers should at the very least kick tires on before the October 31 deadline:

Here’s day and time for 2023 NFL trade deadline

The NFL trade deadline is coming up quick.

If the 49ers are going to make another trade to try and improve their roster, it’ll need to happen quickly.

The NFL trade deadline is set for 1:00pm Pacific Time on October 31.

That means San Francisco will have its Week 7 game against the Vikings and its Week 8 game vs. the Bengals to determine whether its roster is Super Bowl-ready as is, or if it needs an upgrade somewhere.

The 49ers already made one addition when they acquired defensive end Randy Gregory and a 2024 seventh-round pick from the Broncos for a 2024 sixth-round selection.

In past years we’ve seen them have success trading for players like Jordan Willis and Charles Omenihu on the defensive line. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they made even a similar smaller move on the margins to improve depth along either the offensive line or in the secondary.

Trey Lance’s hopes of starting seem to be over after former No. 3 pick was traded to Cowboys

With Trey Lance going to back up Dak Prescott in Dallas, it seems his hopes of becoming a starter have ended.

When the San Francisco 49ers reportedly named Sam Darnold the backup behind Brock Purdy, it was largely expected that former No. 3 overall NFL draft pick Trey Lance would be heading elsewhere.

Indeed, the team ultimately opted to trade Lance, sending him to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick on Friday evening, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He’ll presumably compete with Cooper Rush, who started five games last year for an injured Dak Prescott, for the backup job.

With Prescott playing well while under one of the most lucrative quarterback deals in football, the move all but ends Lance’s hopes of becoming an NFL starter, at least barring an injury situation.

It’s been a bit of a surprising arc considering the high pick the 49ers invested in Lance, and he remains a largely unknown quantity. He’s only appeared in eight games in his two-year career, making four starts. A one-year starter at the FCS level in college, we just haven’t seen Lance play in a lot of football games.

He beat out Jimmy Garoppolo last season for the starting job but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Purdy, meanwhile, ultimately took over after Garoppolo suffered an injury of his own, nearly leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance.

Purdy maintaining the starting job is understandable, but Darnold — a former third-overall pick himself — beating out Lance is more concerning. After three frustrating seasons with the Jets, Darnold landed in Carolina where he was a part-time starter for a team that finished 7-10.

It’s also telling that no teams in need of quarterback help were willing to give Lance a chance, especially given the relatively low reported asking price.

San Francisco moved on from Lance without giving him much of a chance, and it doesn’t seem like another franchise is willing to, either.

BREAKING: 49ers trade QB Trey Lance to Cowboys

BREAKING: The #49ers have traded QB Trey Lance.

The 49ers are pulling the plug on 2021 No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance before his third season begins.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco is trading Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a mid-round pick.

NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported the compensation is a Round 4 selection in the 2024 draft.

The news comes after the club named Sam Darnold its backup quarterback. Darnold beat out Lance for the job. QB Brandon Allen will now fill the third QB role for the 49ers.

Lance’s career in the Bay Area comes to an end after just eight games and four starts. He completed 54.9 percent of his 102 throws with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Lance averaged 7.8 yards per attempt and holds a career QB rating of 84.5.

San Francisco will save $940,000 against the cap in 2023, and another $5,310,717 during the 2024 season. The trade will come with $5,540,956 dead cap hits in each of the next two years.

John Lynch: Keeping Trey Lance most likely option for 49ers

John Lynch said that Trey Lance is the #49ers QB3 and will most likely be with the team this season.

It doesn’t sound like 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is going anywhere despite a flurry of reports Wednesday that indicated the club would be looking to move its No. 3 pick from the 2021 draft.

General manager John Lynch on Thursday hopped on with Murph and Mac on KNBR in San Francisco to give an update on the 49ers QB room, and said Lance would be staying with the team in all likelihood.

“I think that’s the most likely option,” Lynch said. “As I said, we’re very happy with Trey. That’s probably the most likely option is that he’s here. If we could find a landing spot for Trey that is a really good one for him, and works for our organization, that’s not something we’d not turn a blind eye to. But that’s not where our focus is right now. I think our focus is on Trey getting back here, and us being the best football team. We’re getting close to Pittsburgh and that’s kinda where we’re at. There’s viable options for all players, but right now Trey’s a part of our team and we’re gonna move forward with that in mind.”

Lynch also alluded to some of the injury woes that befell the team last season and how their goal was to maintain good depth under center. Moving on from Lance would push Brandon Allen into the No. 3 QB spot, which is what NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Wednesday said had already happened with Lance sitting behind Allen on the depth chart. The 49ers GM though said that heading into the preseason finale, Lance is still third on the depth chart.

“Yeah I think that’s the plan,” Lynch said about Lance playing in Friday’s preseason finale. “He’s our number 3 quarterback as we stand right now, I think that would be the expectation that we see him after Sam’s done tomorrow and we’ll look to finish our preseason in a really good way versus the Chargers.”

If a trade materializes for Lance where the 49ers feel they’re getting good value back for him, then this could all change. Those trade offers don’t seem to be coming in though, which means Lance sticking around is all but certain.

Kyle Shanahan doesn’t sound eager to trade QB Trey Lance

Kyle Shanahan didn’t sound eager to move on from Trey Lance in an interview with KNBR in San Francisco:

The 49ers have reached a crossroads with quarterback Trey Lance after he was beat out by Sam Darnold for the backup QB job behind Brock Purdy.

Reports indicated that San Francisco would be exploring all options with Lance, including trading the 2021 No. 3 overall pick, in the aftermath of Darnold winning the backup spot. Head coach Kyle Shanahan in an interview with Adam Copeland and Tom Tolbert on KNBR in San Francisco didn’t sound eager to move on from the QB though, saying he hopes Lance is with the team in Week 1.

“I feel very, very fortunate to have both of them here,” Shanahan said of Darnold and Lance via KNBR. “I really hope when it’s said and done that all three of these guys are here, and you never know when that’s going to come up. We needed four guys last year. It doesn’t happen much, but if we can have Trey as an option here, I would feel extremely happy about that. I think the other quarterbacks in our room would and our team would. Trey is a very well-liked guy and one of the better people I’ve been around, and I do think he’s going to have a lot of success in this league.”

Shanahan and the 49ers may not have much of a choice when it comes to keeping Lance, which means it behooves the head coach to continue very publicly supporting the QB.

Since reports of Darnold winning the backup job surfaced, there’s been no indication that trade talks with any teams have gone anywhere for San Francisco, although the Vikings are a team floated as a potential suitor after the two clubs had talks about a Lance trade during the offseason.

Keeping Lance might ultimately be best for the 49ers in 2023 anyway. If he doesn’t play, they can move him in the offseason. If they do need him to play, he may get the chance to improve that he didn’t get in either of his first two years.

Perhaps a trade materializes, but it doesn’t sound like Shanahan is hurrying to shove Lance out the door just to get him out of the building. And that may be what keeps him around.

Vikings a popular name in Trey Lance trade rumors

There are no hard reports on Trey Lance trade possibilities, but the Vikings keep popping up as a potential suitor:

The 49ers are “exploring all options” with now third-string quarterback Trey Lance. That specific phrasing has been used in virtually every report about Lance’s future after Sam Darnold was named the backup quarterback. Now it appears those options may be coming down to trading him to the Minnesota Vikings.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport first threw out the Vikings as a potential suitor in a trade when he tweeted that the 49ers calling the Vikings “makes sense.” It’s not a hard report from the NFL insider, but it’s notable when a person as connected as Rapoport floats a specific team in trade speculation.

CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones followed that with a tweet where he said “the Vikings are the team that makes the most sense.” He reported that several teams thought to be interested in Lance “emphatically are not.”

Then Charles Robinson, a senior NFL reporter for Yahoo tweeted about how much the Vikings make sense as well.

This isn’t the first time Minnesota and Lance have been connected either.

Back in April, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that the 49ers and Vikings at the combine discussed a trade involving the 2021 No. 3 overall pick. Lance is from Marshall, Minnesota, which is about 150 miles wise of Minneapolis where the Vikings play their home games. Dianna Russini of the Athletic on Wednesday reported the 49ers and Vikings had talks during the Spring that eventually fell apart.

Minnesota’s future under center is uncertain for now. QB Kirk Cousins is entering the final year of his contract. Their backup is veteran and former 49ers signal caller Nick Mullens. After that they have rookie Jaren Hall, who they selected late in the fifth round out of BYU.

Lance has two years left on his rookie contract, plus a fifth-year team option that would need to be picked up after next year’s draft. That could conceivably give the Vikings three full years to evaluate Lance in practice and in games before deciding on whether he’s worth a long-term, high-priced extension.

For now though there are no hard reports on any offers on the table for Lance, and the 49ers asking price is unknown. Russini also Athletic reported the club shopped Lance throughout the offseason and never received any significant offers.

It’s hard to imagine any significant offers will surface this late in the preseason, but keep an eye on Minnesota since they’re the only club to be linked to any sort of Lance trade rumors.

Trey Lance on trade rumors: ‘This is absolutely where I want to be’

Trey Lance trade rumors were all over the place, but the QB said he never wanted to leave the 49ers.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Speculation flew throughout the offseason that the 49ers might aim to move on from quarterback Trey Lance. Brock Purdy’s emergence as the team’s No. 1 signal caller put Lance’s future with the club in question.

Ultimately the club decided not to give up on the former No. 3 pick and instead kept a strong QB room with Purdy, Lance and free agent signee Sam Darnold. While the rumor mill churned about Lance potentially moving on, he QB told reporters in a press conference Tuesday that he never hoped to be moved.

“No, not at all. I knew where I wanted to be,” Lance said. “Even going back to last year, like I said, I just wanted my opportunity to compete. For me, I love it here. I love the coaching staff, I love working with (QB coach Brian) Griese and (assistant QB coach) Klay (Kubiak), and now (passing game coordinator) Klint (Kubiak) as well. Love the quarterback room. Love the guys in the locker room. No doubt for me, this is absolutely where I want to be.”

When former 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon joined the Titans as their general manager, Lance posted on social media a photo of Carthon captioned with a few ‘fingers crossed’ emojis. Some took that to mean Lance was hopeful he’d go to Nashville with Carthon. The QB later explained on an online radio show with QB coach Quincy Avery that he uses the ‘fingers crossed’ emoji all the time and not to mean he’s hopeful to be moved out of San Francisco.

It makes sense that he’d want to stick around with the 49ers. Their injury woes at QB have turned their backup QBs into starters in virtually all of Kyle Shanahan’s seasons as head coach. Lance will also get a real chance to compete for the starting QB job while Purdy is out recovering from offseason elbow surgery,

Reports from Lance’s personal QB coach are that the 23-year-old made significant offseason strides from a mechanics standpoint. If he continues those improvements into training camp there’s a chance he makes things interesting atop the team’s depth chart.

The ability to compete has been Lance’s M.O. since arriving in the Bay Area, and now he’ll get that opportunity this offseason.

Perhaps the 49ers aren’t his permanent NFL home. That’ll be determined over how the next 10 or so months go. However, both sides are outwardly happy with the relationship for now, and keeping things harmonious could be beneficial to both Lance and the 49ers moving forward.

John Lynch mum on trade inquiries for WR Brandon Aiyuk

John Lynch had a strange answer when asked if the 49ers had received calls about trading WR Brandon Aiyuk.

The 49ers know the side effects of constructing a great roster in the NFL. It gets expensive and decisions have to be made about which good players to keep and which good players to let go. That conundrum led to the DeForest Buckner trade, and it could presumably lead to a handful of additional deals over the next couple of seasons.

One player on the radar of NFL teams is wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. General manager John Lynch on Monday in his pre-draft press conference was asked about Aiyuk’s availability and whether the team has received calls on the wide receiver.

“I’m not going to get into specifics on people,” Lynch said. “We love Brandon Aiyuk and I’m excited about Brandon being a part of this team, so I’ll just leave it at that.”

Given his illuminating responses about quarterback Trey Lance, his choice to not delve into specifics is interesting. It could mean a number of things, so let’s speculate!

Perhaps he felt like he offered too much information on Lance. It might also mean there were some real discussions with a team on Aiyuk that Lynch didn’t want to divulge. There’s a chance also that earlier reporting from ESPN’s Nick Wagoner on the team receiving calls about trading the wide receiver ruffled feathers and Lynch didn’t want to meander down that path again.

A followup question about Aiyuk’s long-term involvement with the team offered a more positive outlook for the receiver’s future with the club.

“You can’t keep everyone, we’re trying to do something special this year and Brandon is going to be a big part of that and beyond as well,” Lynch said. “And so yes, you always have to think out a few years, but we’re really excited about Brandon. I feel like he made another big step last year, and I think the best is yet to come and so we want him being a part of it and at some point, yeah, you have to figure things out and I guess we’ll take that as it comes, but as of right now and into the future, we’re really excited about Brandon Aiyuk and where he is at as a pro. The work he’s done to develop as a pro and become one of our core players here.”

The problem San Francisco will encounter soon is whether they can afford to pay both WRs Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Aiyuk has two years left on his rookie contract which gives the 49ers a little wiggle room.

Ultimately this is a good place for the team to be. They have a slew of good players and paying them is going to require some tough calls from the front office. Perhaps a huge offer from a team comes in for Aiyuk and the 49ers have to make the deal, but it doesn’t sound like they’re eager to move off of him.
