Brian Burns makes 2023’s ‘NFL Top 100’ list

For the second straight year, Panthers OLB Brian Burns has swooped in on the “NFL Top 100” list.

Between his uniform change and his ongoing contract talks, Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Brian Burns has had a lot of numbers thrown at him this offseason. And on Friday, he got another.

Burns made the cut for the latest installment of the “NFL Top 100” list. As voted on by his fellow football-playing peers, the 25-year-old came in at No. 54 on the annual rankings—a healthy jump from his No. 76 standing a year ago.

The 2019 first-round pick is hot off the best campaign of his pro career. He notched bests in sacks (12.5), tackles (63), tackles for a loss (17), quarterback hits (22) and pressures (68)—all of which helped him earn his second straight nod as a Pro Bowl starter for the NFC.

With 50 spots remaining, this may also be the second straight year in which Burns is the only Panther to be named to the list. Some other notable players who were featured in Friday’s group alongside Burns include New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (No. 51), Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans (No. 53) and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (No. 56).

Vote: Should Panthers have more players on 2022’s NFL Top 100 list?

Brians Burns was the only Panthers player to be named to the #NFLTop100. But should they have more representatives? Give us your opinion!

A little over a week ago, Carolina Panthers defensive end Brian Burns was named to the Top 100 Players of 2022 list—coming in at No. 76 on the annual special. And as far as the list goes for the organization, well, that’s it.

On Thursday morning in a bit of a teaser, the NFL’s official Twitter account revealed the top 20 players of the countdown. Those names, which were featured in alphabetical order, will be ranked on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET in the final episode of the series.

This, obviously, leaves the Panthers with just the one selection in Burns. But should there be more Carolina representatives on this list?

How about running back Christian McCaffrey? Sure, he’s played in just 10 games over the last two seasons, but he became just the third player in league history to amass a single campaign of 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in 2019 and is still certainly an elite talent.

What about receiver DJ Moore? Despite the jumbled mess of quarterbacks the team has saddled him with, he’s the only wideout with at least 1,200 yards from scrimmage in each of the past three seasons.

Panthers DE Brian Burns named to NFL’s 2022 Top 100 list

Panthers DE Brian Burns swooped right into the #NFLTop100 and landed at the No. 76 spot.

The Carolina Panthers already knew—probably as far as back 2019, in fact—that they had a rising star on their roster named Brian Burns. Now, pretty much everyone might be in the know.

On Sunday night, the NFL Network aired the opening installment of its annual top 100 list—in which the league’s players vote on, well, the league’s best players of 2022. And right in the middle of things, as he so often is in the trenches, was Burns at No. 76.

This past season was a memorable one for the former 16th overall pick, as he was named to his first Pro Bowl following his third pro campaign. The talented defensive end recorded 50 combined tackles, two forced fumbles, four passes defensed and 18 quarterback hits while tying a career-high in sacks with 9.0.

Carolina, again, knows they have themselves a keeper, as Burns had his fifth-year option officially picked up back on April 29. But before he gets to that year, it’ll be his fourth here in 2022 that hopefully takes him and the Panthers to another level.

Notre Dame well-represented on NFL Top 100 list

Through just over half the rankings four Notre Dame players have appeared on the NFL’s Top 100 list. How many more will show up?

If you’re craving football returning chances are you’ve flipped on NFL Network in the last few days.  If you’ve done that you’ve almost certainly seen them promote their “NFL Top 100” list that has returned again this season.

NFL Network is revealing the list this week and has already counted down from 100 to 41.  In that window four former Notre Dame players have already been unvieled.

Checking in at No. 88 was Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith who is actually down 27 spots from a year ago when he checked in at 61.

Ronnie Stanley made his debut on the list as he came in ranked at 74.  I thought even though he wasn’t on the list previously that this felt a bit low considering how elite he was in pass protection a year ago and because of how much he helped an incredibly strong Ravens run game.

Harrison Smith has been a mainstay on the list as he’s appeared on it now five consecutive seasons.  Smith had the highest Madden rating of any safety in football recently and checked in at No. 64 on this years list, up 19 spots from No. 83 a year ago.

Finally Zack Martin of the Dallas Cowboys rounds out the Notre Dame players that have been mentioned so far. Martin is as reliable as any offensive guard in the game and came in ranked No. 55, his highest rating ever of the four times he’s now appeared on the list.

The show resumes Tuesday night as spots 40-11 will be unveieled, then Wednesday night spots 10-1 will be counted down.

The list has featured the main Notre Dame characters you’d expect to see with the exception of Quenton Nelson.  Nelson is as dominant of offensive lineman as there is in the game but I’m curious how high they’ll actually rank a guard.

My best guess is he’ll come in somewhere around 25 or so largely because of the position that he plays.
