Cowboys loss to Cardinals highlights good Week 3 for 49ers

The #49ers got a ton of help in Week 3 on their quest to be the top seed in the NFC.

The 49ers got to take Sunday off after knocking off the Giants on Thursday at Levi’s Stadium.

While San Francisco couldn’t do any more to help themselves, there were a slew of games that could help them in their quest for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

We ran through what games and outcomes would most help the 49ers, and most of them went the 49ers’ way. The one that really jumps out though is the Cowboys’ 28-16 loss to the Cardinals in Arizona.

Dallas was a team many pointed to as a potential threat to the 49ers for the top seed in the conference and through two weeks they very much looked the part with a pair of blowout wins that highlighted the strength of their offense and defense.

Neither unit looked strong Sunday in Arizona where the Cardinals controlled all 60 minutes and never trailed. It’s only one week, but Dallas’ struggles against this iteration of the Cardinals makes it difficult to still consider them one of the NFC’s top teams.

The Eagles and Buccaneers are both 2-0 so the result of their game will also have some impact on the 49ers in their hunt for the top seed in the conference. That game will help cap Week 3 on Monday night.

Here are the Sunday games that impacted the 49ers and how they went:

49ers can clinch NFC West with win vs. Seahawks

The #49ers got a win AND a lot of help Sunday, setting up a high-stakes matchup with Seattle on Thursday:

The 49ers have business of their own to attend to, but Sunday’s NFL slate couldn’t have gone much better for them.

Step One for San Francisco was getting a win. They handled that with a 35-7 blowout of the Buccaneers.

Step Two was getting a Vikings loss in the morning. Minnesota fell to their NFC North rival Lions 34-23, which dropped their record to 10-3 on the season, just one game ahead of the 49ers for the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Since the 49ers and Vikings don’t play against each other this season, the first tiebreaker will be conference record, where the 49ers now hold a one-game advantage. Minnesota is 6-3 vs. the NFC, while San Francisco is 7-2 against the conference. The Vikings face the Colts at home next week.

Step Three, and the biggest help the 49ers could’ve gotten Sunday, was a Seattle loss. The Panthers went into Lumen Field and knocked off the Seahawks 30-24 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.

The Seattle loss dropped them to 7-6 on the season, a full two games back of the 49ers. That sets the stakes extremely high for their matchup Thursday night. If San Francisco wins, they clinch the division since they’ll hold the head-to-head tiebreaker and Seattle could at best tie them by season’s end.

It was overall a very good Sunday for the 49ers.

Week 14 schedule: Which games matter for 49ers?

These are the games that matter most for the 49ers on Sunday, with predictions for each contest.

The 49ers have to handle their own business down the stretch, but we’ve reached the portion of the calendar where scoreboard watching is important since a win or loss by another team could dramatically swing the 49ers’ outlook on the season.

San Francisco won’t have it easy the rest of the way as they start rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy at quarterback. Their final five games begin Sunday with a showdown against the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Every win is paramount for the 49ers at this point, but they could get some help to take some of the pressure off down the stretch.

Here’s a look at the Week 14 games that could have an impact on the 49ers’ playoff push and how much each one matters on a 10-point scale (10 being the most crucial). We’ve also given a prediction for each contest:

Which teams should 49ers fans root for in Week 9?

Which teams should #49ers fans be rooting for in Week 9?

The 49ers have Week 9 off, but the rest of the NFL slate has some games that could actually improve San Francisco’s standing in the playoff race and division race by the time they return to action in Week 10.

While 49ers fans kick their feet up with no game to worry about, these are the games they should be keeping a close eye on:

Jaguars shutout Colts ahead of Week 3 matchup with Chargers

The Jaguars looked good in their victory over the Colts.

After dropping their Week 2 battle to the Chiefs, the Chargers will look to get back on track against the Jaguars next Sunday.

Jacksonville is coming off a shutout victory over the Colts, 24-0.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence was nearly perfect, completing 25 of 30 passes for 235 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Both his passing touchdowns went to wide receiver Christian Kirk, one of the Jaguars’ most significant offseason additions. Kirk amassed 78 yards receiving along the way.

Defensively, Jacksonville intercepted QB Matt Ryan three times, sacked him five times, and hurried him another 11 times. The group also limited 2021 rushing leader Jonathan Taylor to just 54 yards.

The Jaguars were pegged as the laughing stock of the league in years prior. Now, with a legitimate play-caller in head coach Doug Pederson, a decent defensive coordinator in Mike Caldwell, and a young but talented roster on both sides of the ball, they are not to be taken lightly.

Los Angeles will return to the practice field on Wednesday, which should mark whether or not QB Justin Herbert, who suffered a fracture to his rib cartilage, will be able to practice and in what capacity.

The Chargers will look to overcome their copious errors and missed opportunities that they endured in their loss to Kansas City.
