Playoff and division scenarios for Week 18 of the NFL season

Here’s every playoff and divisional scenario for Week 18 of the NFL season.

One of many reasons the NFL decided to expand to a 17-game season over 18 weeks in 2021 was the idea that talk of playoff scenarios would expand to more weeks late in the season.

The NFL is many things, but it is not dumb about generating fan interest in such things, and it worked out about as well as the league could have expected. Last week, only the Chiefs had clinched a playoff berth in an AFC nobody seems to want to win. There were five defined playoff teams in the NFC, but the one-seed was still up for grabs, and all kinds of anarchy at the bottom.

As we head into the final week of the season, we know a lot more about what the playoffs will look like. The Packers have clinched the NFC’s one-seed, and five teams — the Chiefs, the Bengals, the Titans, the Bills, and the Patriots — are officially playoff-bound. Kansas City could have wrapped up the AFC’s one-seed if they beat the Bengals, but they didn’t, and now, the Titans have the one-seed for the time being. That is still in play, with several teams vying for the top spot, the only first-round bye in the conference, and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

In the NFC, six teams — the Packers, Cowboys, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Rams, and Eagles — are in. Where they’ll all stand below Aaron Rodgers and his crew remains to be seed.

Here are all the possible playoff and division scenarios for the final week of the regular season.

Here’s how the Chargers can clinch playoff berth

While the chances are much slimmer following the loss to the Texans, the playoffs are still within reach for the Chargers.

Heading into Week 16, the Chargers were in complete control of their playoff destiny. Win each of their three remaining games, and they’re in.

However, in the most unexpected manner, they lost to a Texans team that ranked near the bottom in nearly every statistical category and were without 16 active-roster players.

Now 8-7, Los Angeles can no longer determine its fate and must hope for outcomes of games to specific teams that are also in the playoff hunt.

According to ESPN’s Power Index, L.A. now has a 38.5% chance of making the playoffs after having a 77% chance a little over 24 hours ago.

To play beyond the regular season, here’s what must happen for the Chargers:

– Beat their final two opponents, the Broncos (7-8) and Raiders (8-7).

– The Ravens (8-7) lose at least one of their final two games: Rams (10-5) or Steelers (7-7-1).

* Baltimore owns the tiebreaker over Los Angeles based on head-to-head win percentage.

– The Dolphins (7-7) lose at least one of their final three games: Saints (7-7), Titans (10-5), or Patriots (10-5).

* Miami owns the tiebreaker over L.A. based on best win percentage in common games.

The playoffs are still well within reach, but if the Chargers can’t make any adjustments from yesterday’s game, no matter who’s on the field, the only thing that will be in sight for them is the offseason.

Playoff scenarios for Week 16 of the NFL season

Here’s how every team in the hunt can wrap up division titles and/or playoff berths in Week 16 of the NFL season.

With the 49ers’ loss to the Titans on Thursday night, the Cowboys clinched their first playoff spot since 2018, giving us a bit of postseason clarity in a season that has been very short on same. As we head into Week 16 in bunches, no AFC team has clinched a playoff spot, and only the Packers (who wrapped up the NFC North last week) and Cowboys have guaranteed options in the NFC.

Think it could get even weirder than that? You are absolutely correct, Dear Reader. Only three AFC teams (the Jaguars, Texans, and Jets) are eliminated from postseason contention in the AFC, and only the Lions and Bears (oh, my) are out in the NFC. With 27 teams examining their possibilities this week, here’s how the following teams can grab playoff berths and/or division titles.

Here’s every playoff scenario for Week 15 of the NFL season

No NFL team has clinched a playoff berth as we get Week 15 underway, and here’s how several teams can clinch postseason spots or division titles.

The NFL has always wanted parity, and this is about as close as you can get this far into a season. For only the third time since 1990 (it also happened in 1993 and 2014), the NFL enters Week 15 without a team having clinched a playoff berth. With four weeks to play, 28 teams remain in playoff contention.

Only one team in the NFC — the Detroit Lions — has been officially eliminated from the playoff picture. And in the AFC, only the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, and New York Jets are out.

Of course, some teams would require a whole bunch of things to happen for them to enter the postseason, but that’s where it stands right now.

And here’s how these teams can punch their tickets into the postseason in Week 15.

NFL playoff scenarios: Live, updated standings during Week 17 games

Here’s where things stand.

We’re down to the final window of games in the 2020 NFL regular season and is still plenty to sort out in the playoff picture.

Of the eight games going on right now, seven of them have playoff implications. Here are the games that matter:

Cardinals @ Rams
Packers @ Bears
Jaguars @ Colts
Titans @ Texans
Saints @ Panthers
Seahawks @ 49ers

Tonight, the Washington Football Team will play the Eagles for its spot in the postseason. Here’s how the playoff field currently stands heading into the late games on Sunday:

AFC / NFC

1. Chiefs / Packers
2. Bills / Saints
3. Steelers / Seahawks
4. Titans / Washington Football Team
5. Ravens / Buccaneers
6. Browns / Rams
7. Colts / Bears

Here are the rest of the playoff scenarios you need to know as time runs out on the regular season, including the teams that have already been locked into their spot…

Locked into playoff spot

Chiefs

Kansas City locked up home-field advantage throughout the playoffs in Week 16.

Bills

Buffalo clinched the No. 2 seed with a win over the Dolphins.

Steelers

Pittsburgh clinched the AFC North in Week 16 and the loss to Cleveland locked up the No. 3 seed.

Ravens

Baltimore is locked into the No. 5 seed after beating the Bengals.

Browns

Cleveland clinched a playoff berth and the No. 6 seed with the win over the Steelers.

Clinched berth but playing for seeding

Titans

Tennessee is in the playoffs but can lock up the AFC South with a win or a Colts loss. That would lock them into the No. 4 seed. A loss and a Colts win would drop them to the No. 7 seed.

In the hunt

Colts

Indianapolis needs a win over the Jaguars to lock up a playoff berth. A win and a Titans loss would win the division and the No. 4 seed.

Dolphins

Miami needs a Colts loss to lock up the final spot in the AFC playoffs.

Locked into playoff spot

Buccaneers

Tampa Bay is locked into the No. 5 seed no matter what happens.

Clinched berth but playing for seeding

Packers

Green Bay can earn home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a win. If Green Bay loses, New Orleans would be next in line for the top seed. If the Saints also lose, Seattle would get the No. 1 seed with a win.

Saints

New Orleans needs a win and a Packers loss to earn home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. If the Saints lose and the Seahawks win, New Orleans would drop to the No. 3 seed.

Seahawks

Seattle has a top-three seed locked up. The Seahawks need the Packers and Saints to lose in order to have a shot at home-field advantage.

In the hunt

Washington Football Team

Washington needs a win to make the playoffs and lock up the No. 4 seed in the NFC. A loss would eliminate Washington.

Giants

New York needs a Washington loss to the Eagles in order to win the division and the No. 4 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Rams

Los Angeles can clinch a playoff berth with a win. That would give them the No. 6 seed in the conference. The Rams could still make the playoffs with a loss if the Bears also lose to the Packers. That would give L.A. the No. 7 seed.

Cardinals

Arizona needs a win over the Rams in order to make the playoffs. The Bears-Packers game would decide the Cardinals’ seeding. A Green Bay win would give Arizona the No. 6 seed. A Chicago win would give Arizona the No. 7 seed.

Bears

Chicago will make the playoffs with a win or a Cardinals loss. If the Bears win combined with a Rams win, they’d get the No. 7 seed. If the Bears win and the Cardinals win, they’d get the No. 6 seed. And if both Chicago and Arizona lose, the Bears would end up with the No. 7 seed.

Here’s the NFL’s entire postseason picture heading into Week 17

Here are all the remining playoff scenarios for the NFL in Week 17.

In the interest of making clinching scenarios more interesting (and to make more money!), the NFL decided to add a seventh playoff team to each conference for the 2020 season. It certainly has made the musical chairs more musical, as there are 18 teams in contention for a trip to Super Bowl LV. There hasn’t been more teams still alive for postseason berths entering the league’s final week since 2006, when there were 20 teams.

In the AFC, the Chiefs have already clinched the AFC West and the first-seed, which gives them the only first-round bye in the conference. The Bills are currently the second-seed and have clinched the AFC East. The Steelers are the third-seed and have clinched the AFC North.

  • The Bills clinch the second-seed with a win over the Dolphins, or a Steelers loss, or a tie plus a Steelers tie.
  • The Steelers clinch the second-seed with a win over the Browns, plus a Bills tie, or a win or tie, plus a Bills loss.

In the NFC, the Packers have clinched the NFC North, the Saints have clinched the NFC South, the Seahawks have clinched the NFC West, and the Buccaneers have clinched a playoff berth, but the first-seed is still very much up for grabs.

Here are all the playoff scenarios for Week 17.

Ravens’ playoff scenarios for Week 17: What seed will Baltimore earn?

The Baltimore Ravens have a plethora of ways to get into the postseason now but what seed will they have and who will they face?

Week 16 isn’t completely over, as the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots still need to clash on “Monday Night Football.” But for the Ravens’ playoff scenarios, things are as clear as they’re going to get until next week when the dust settles. And with fans hungry to know where Baltimore stands in the playoff hunt, it’s a perfect opportunity to see exactly what’s potentially in store for the Ravens beyond Week 17.

Using ESPN’s playoff machine, I calculated every major scenario for the AFC to determine what is most likely to happen for the Ravens. While I didn’t factor in ties, this breaks down how Baltimore could be as high as the fifth seed and as low as out of the postseason entirely, and everything that needs to happen for each scenario.

For those wanting to keep track of the madness, it all starts tonight with the Bills vs. Patriots. But in Week 17, the Ravens vs. Bengals, Dolphins vs. Bills, Steelers vs. Browns, Titans vs. Texans, and Jaguars vs. Colts are all critically important to figuring out where Baltimore winds up and who they’ll face in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs.

Let’s dig into each possibility below and just how likely each scenario is.

NFL playoff scenarios: How Titans can clinch a postseason berth in Week 15

A lot needs to happen for the Titans to clinch a playoff berth in Week 15, but it’s possible nonetheless.

While the Tennessee Titans won’t be able to wrap-up the AFC South in Week 15, they could clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Detroit Lions and some help from other teams.

On Wednesday, the NFL shared the scenarios in which the Titans can earn a spot in the playoffs this week. Remember, the Titans need just one of the following scenarios to unfold:

1. Titans win and the Baltimore Ravens (vs. Jacksonville Jaguars) lose.

2. Titans win and Las Vegas Raiders (vs. Los Angeles Chargers) lose or tie, and the Miami Dolphins (vs. New England Patriots) lose, and the Cleveland Browns (at New York Giants) win or tie.

3. Titans win and Raiders lose or tie, and the Dolphins lose, and Titans or Browns clinch strength of victory over the Dolphins.

Granted, there’s a lot that needs to happen there for the Titans to clinch, but never say never.

Here’s a look at the entire list of playoff-clinching scenarios in Week 15:

As far as the division is concerned, things are razor-thin for Tennessee there. If the Titans can beat the Lions, they’ll remain in first place no matter what happens with the Indianapolis Colts versus the Houston Texans.

However, should the Titans lose and the Colts win, Indy would take over first place in the AFC South.

According to the New York Times, the Titans’ playoff chances are very good. Tennessee has a 94 percent chance to make the playoffs and a 64 percent chance to win the division.

We’ll take those odds all day everyday, and twice on Sunday. The Titans will look to secure their first double-digit win season since 2008 when they host the Lions on Sunday.

Playoff clinching scenarios for these teams in Week 15

Take a look at what’s on the line playoff-wise for these five NFL teams heading into Week 15.
