Texans vs. Bears: Brett Rypien throws 3 TDs in 21-17 storm-shortened HOF Game victory

Brett Rypien and weather delays were the kryptonite of the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame Game against the Chicago Bears Thursday night.

There will be no late-night heroics Thursday evening in Canton, Ohio for the Houston Texans.

The NFL’s Hall of Fame exhibition opener between the Texans and Chicago Bears was suspended with 3:31 left in the third quarter due to lightning and heavy rain. After nearly 45 minutes of deliberation, both sides elected to call it instead of waiting for the weather to clear.

By default, the Bears secured a 21-17 win behind three touchdown passes from Brett Rypien. Houston struggled to duplicate its first-half success following the start of the third quarter.

Davis Mills and Case Keenum each impressed during their time on the field in the third 30 minutes of action. Mills, the Texans’ third-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, connected with tight end Teagan Quitoriano for a 9-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive to give Houston a 7-0 lead.

Keenum, who started two games last season in place of the injured C.J. Stroud, found Cam Akers for a 4-yard score with less than four minutes remaining in the second half.

Akers, a 2020 second-round pick, was a highlight on offense thanks to his suave moves in the open field. After tearing his Achilles last season with the Vikings in Week 9, Akers juked past a pair of defenders for a first-down gain in the second quarter.

His quick-cut spin move caught took Stroud by surprise on the sidelines. Everyone from Houston’s bench seemed ecstatic to see the former Florida State still have some juice left in the tank.

Rypien connected twice with Collin Johnson for scores and once with tight end Tommy Sweeny. He finished 11-of-15 passing for 166 yards. Johnson, who starred at the University of Texas finished with three catches for 56 yards.
It’s safe to say there’s work ahead of Houston before its matchup next Friday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The good news? All sights now turn to Andre Johnson’s Hall of Fame enshrinement on Saturday.

Broncos won’t play in NFL’s Hall of Fame Game this summer

Broncos great Randy Gradishar will be enshrined in Canton this summer, but the Broncos won’t play in the Hall of Fame Game.

The Denver Broncos will have one former player enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, but the team won’t be featured in the league’s annual Hall of Fame Game.

The Chicago Bears will face the Houston Texans in the the first game of the preseason on Thursday, Aug. 1 in Canton, Ohio.

The Bears have three players — return specialist Devin Hester, defensive lineman Steve McMichael and pass rusher Julius Peppers — set to be enshrined. The Texans, meanwhile, have wide receiver Andre Johnson as the franchise’s first-ever Hall of Famer.

After the Hall of Fame Game, the 2024 class will be enshrined on Saturday, Aug. 3. Broncos linebacker Randy Gradishar was elected to this year’s class as a senior candidate.

Denver played the Atlanta Falcons in the Hall of Fame Game in 2019, kicking off the preseason with a 14-10 win. This year, the Broncos will have a set of three preseason games beginning the week of Aug. 5.

Former Aggie QB Kellen Mond will start in the 2023 NFL Hall of Fame Game

Former Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond will start for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Hall of Fame Game.

With the offseason in the rearview mirror, the NFL’s Enshrinement Week will officially turn the page onto the new season as the first action kicks off on Thursday, August 3. The NFL’s Hall of Fame game has been a staple of the new calendar year, and while it’s just a preseason exhibition, it’s the start of an exciting new season nonetheless.

This year’s game will feature the Cleveland Browns facing the New York Jets, as both teams have ties to the incoming class of inductees. For the Browns, starting quarterback Deshaun Watson will likely not suit up for Thursday’s exhibition. According to the latest reports, a former Texas A&M quarterback will start instead.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanksi shared that former Aggies QB Kellen Mond will start for the team in Thursday’s Hall of Fame game. Playing behind Mond will be rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson, who was taken in the fifth round out of UCLA.

Mond was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the 66th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Aggies from 2017 to 2020, throwing for 9,661 yards with 71 touchdowns and 17 interceptions with a career 132.0 passer rating in college. He also added 1,609 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground, finishing his career at Texas A&M as one of three SEC quarterbacks, along with Tim Tebow and Dak Prescott, to record over 9,000 career passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards.

Mond is listed as the third-string QB on the Browns’ depth chart, behind current backup Joshua Dobbs. While it remains to be seen whether he can challenge Dobbs for the backup job, a strong showing in the preseason could garner Mond some attention for a similar role elsewhere.

The Hall of Fame Game will be nationally broadcast on NBC and will stream live on Peacock. Coverage starts at 6 p.m. CT, with the game officially kicking off at 7 p.m. CT.

NFL fans went wild after Steelers punter Pressley Harvin III made the most immaculate punt

You won’t find a more perfect punt than this.

If there’s one thing NFL fans can agree on, it’s that we can all appreciate a good punt when we see it. And Pressley Harvin III just had the punt of a lifetime.

During Thursday’s Hall of Fame game — the official start of the NFL preseason — Pittsburgh Steelers punter Harvin boomed this perfect punt down the field to pin the Dallas Cowboys at the one-yard line near the end of the first half. The ball had the right amount of backspin on it to hit the ground at the one-yard line and just… bounce perfectly in place until Harvin’s teammates were able to down the ball.

It’s quite the incredible punt from Harvin, the Steelers’ 254th pick in April’s draft, one which may have won him a starting spot on Pittsburgh’s roster.

Yes, it may be preseason, but that’s a hell of a punt all the same! NFL fans were beside themselves with excitement at what was, without a doubt, the best play of the game thus far.
