Falcons Wire staff picks NFL Week 6 matchup vs. Panthers

Our Falcons Wire writing staff picks Sunday’s NFC South matchup vs. the Panthers..

The Atlanta Falcons (3-2) have won two straight games against NFC South opponents and will look to win a third when they face the Carolina Panthers (1-4) on the road in Week 6. The two teams are trending in opposite directions entering Sunday’s contest.

The Falcons put on an aerial showcase during their 36-30 win over the Buccaneers in Week 5. The Panthers were defeated 36-10 in a blowout loss to the Bears. Carolina benched former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young for Andy Dalton in Week 3, going 1-2 since the quarterback change.

The Falcons sit atop the NFC South after five games and there’s an almost contagious sense of optimism in Atlanta. The team is heavily favored after winning back-to-back games that came down to the wire with quarterback Kirk Cousins passing for a team-record 509 yards in Week 5. On Sunday, the Falcons will outmatch the struggling Panthers, who may legitimately be the worst team in the league right now. Quarterback and offensive line are just two of Carolina’s most problematic areas. | Falcons 31, Panthers 10

The Panthers have been held to 10 points or fewer three times this season while Atlanta has scored at least 17 points in all but one game. The Falcons must take care of business this weekend and continue building upon the offensive momentum they showcased in their 36-30 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Expect another big day from Atlanta’s offense on Sunday. | Falcons 34, Panthers 14

It’s hard to pick against the Falcons here, but history suggests this game will be much closer than most anticipate. The Falcons offense has been clicking through the air but the ground game hasn’t been much of a factor. I expect that to change on Sunday. Look for running back Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier to have big days against a struggling Panthers defense. | Falcons 26, Panthers 20

Expert picks overwhelmingly favor Chargers in season opener vs Raiders

The results from some 285 experts are in for the season opener between the Chargers and Raiders

The folks over at NFLpickwatch collected game picks from some 285 different experts and the result was pretty lopsided.

At a rate of nearly 80%, they are choosing the Chargers to beat the Raiders.

As far as the spread is concerned, it has the Chargers by three. So, I guess if you trust the experts on their picks, that would seem a good bet. Not that I’m suggesting it, because that’s not something I would do.

A quick overview is all you really need to see why the experts would favor the Chargers. They have an elite QB and got arguably the prize new head coach of the offseason, snagging Jim Harbaugh who just led the Michigan Wolverines to the National Championship.

The Raiders have a journeyman quarterback and promoted interim head coach Antonio Pierce, who had never held a position in the NFL above linebackers coach. That’s not a knock on him — at least not from me — it’s just the fact of the matter, and it likely affects these predictions.

Who wins Week 10 matchup between Chargers, Vikings?

Vote for who you believe wins the Week 10 matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings.

The Chargers are set to face the Vikings on Sunday afternoon, where Los Angeles will look to pick up another win after their bounce-back performance against the Eagles.

However, though their 3-5 record may not reflect it, Minnesota has shown that they can compete with playoff contenders.

In Week 2, the Vikings made a lot of trouble for the Cardinals, but Arizona barely slipped by with a 34-33 win. Most recently, Minnesota lost in overtime to the Ravens 31-34, another potential playoff contender.

Again, the Vikings showed they can compete at a high caliber. However, they struggle with finishing how they start. Whether it’s penalties or bad play-calling, Minnesota has failed to close out games in a successful fashion, but this can change against the Chargers.

Against Philadelphia, Los Angeles barely escaped with a win after kicker Dustin Hopkins made a field goal in the game’s final seconds.

Will the Chargers keep their momentum from their bounce-back performance against the Eagles? Or will the Vikings find a way to keep Herbert off the field and dominate time of possession?
