NFL Draft 2020: LSU

And here’s the problem after coming up with one of the greatest seasons in the history of college football.

The NFL is going to want your guys.

LSU hasn’t been the NFL Draft first round factory you’d think it is.

Devin White went to Tampa Bay with the fifth overall pick last year, but that was it for Day One. There weren’t any first rounders in 2018, but three were selected early in 2017.

Eight first round picks in the last ten years would be a ton for most programs, but that seems a tad light for LSU.

And this year is about to make up for it.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Just five Tigers have gone in the first round over the last six drafts, and the over/under on this year is at 5.5.

And no, six LSU players have never been selected in the first round. Five LSU player have never been selected in the first round. The four taken in 2007 – JaMarcus Russell, LaRon Landry, Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis (YEEEEEEEESH) – set the program’s record for players sent off to the big leagues.

At least 12 players off the 2019 national champions will have their names called over the weekend, and it could be more like 15 when it’s all done. But all that matters to the 5.5 is the first round.

This isn’t going to be easy.

Joe Burrow is obviously one, but he might be about it for the first 20 picks. The back half of the first round has to be loaded with Tigers to get to six, and it could happen.

Edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson is a sure-thing, and LB Patrick Queen should be a lock, but that’s about it for the no doubters, and you still need three more.

Realistically, WR Justin Jefferson should go late in the first, but that’s hardly a two-foot putt. Safety Grant Delpit is good enough to go in the top 32, but he’s probably going to slide into the second round like Greedy Williams did last year.

Corner Kristian Fulton has first round skills, but he’s more likely to end up going around the late 30s to early 40s. The same goes for RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who’s not a sure-thing for the second round, much less the first.

So …

How Many LSU Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

No way it’s getting to six.

It’s really, really, really hard to get six players drafted in the first round, and LSU has just four – Burrow, Chaisson, Queen and Jefferson – who’ll likely be selected on Day One. It’s going to be a stretch to get to five, much less six.

The +180 on the over is a nice invitation, but don’t accept it.

NFL Draft 2020: Alabama

Three Crimson Tide players were selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, four were selected on Day One in 2018, and four were picked in 2017.

Indianapolis Colt center Ryan Kelly was the only Bama player taken in the 2016 first round, Amari Cooper was the only first rounder in 2015, and just two were gone early in 2014.

In fact, the last time more than five Alabama players were selected in the first round was …

Never.

And the last time Alabama had more than four players selected in the first round of an NFL Draft was …

Never.

But the over/under line on the total number of Alabama players drafted in the first round is a whopping 5.5.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

So can the Crimson Tide obliterate its own record for the number of players picked early, and do it from a team that didn’t even make it into the College Football Playoff last season?

Yeah. It’s possible.

Start with the sure things. QB Tua Tagovailoa, OT Jedrick Wills, WR Jerry Jeudy, and WR Henry Ruggs are all certain to go in the top 20, if not top 15.

But that’s just four, and you need two more to hit the over on the 5.5.

Safety Xavier McKinney is a wee bit of a wild-card. He should be a top 25 pick, but that’s hardly a sure thing with the safeties likely to slip this year. But  realistically, McKinney is a first rounder, and there’s five, and there’s Bama’s record-setting first round.

It’ll take one more to hit the over.

Trevon Diggs, come on down.

The talented corner is a mid-second round prospect who could sneak into the end of the first round with a little bit of luck, but that’s a massive call. Defensive end/edge rusher Terrell Lewis is the only other Bama player who’ll be within sniffing distance of Round One, but … nah.

So …

How Many Alabama Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

Five.

McKinney will make it five in the first round, and you’ll have to hold your breath on Diggs. Lewis won’t go in the top 32, but Diggs could go anywhere from 30 to 45.

The value might not be there on the under, but there isn’t enough upside to roll the dice on the over.

And the ten 2020 NFL Draft position prop bets that appear to be a wee bit favorable in terms of three thins, 1) value, 2) value and 3) value are …

All lines come from BetMGM.

10. 2nd Defensive Lineman Drafted

PICK: Javon Kinlaw +180

We’re all assuming that Chase Young is a mortal lock to be the first defensive lineman taken – he’s a +1800, by the way – but Auburn DT Derrick Brown is being thrown out there as a possible top ten overall pick, and potentially even top five. The problem is the value – he’s a -323 to be the second D lineman selected.

South Carolina’s Javon Kinlaw has a bigger upside, better tools, and is a bigger shot for the start. He’s not a fantastic value, but at +180, there’s at least a bit more of a boost if you get it right.
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

[lawrence-related id=510943]

9. 1st Safety Drafted

PICK: Grant Delpit, +210

It’s very, very possible that Delpit is a better safety than Alabama’s Xavier McKinney. McKinney is the overwhelming favorite to be the first safety off the board – he’s a -304 – but there’s no fun or value in that. It only takes one team to like Delpit, who was a possible top ten overall prospect before last season began.

Jeremy Chinn of Southern Illinois (+700) and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kyle Dugger (+3300) have the best tools of any safety in the draft, but that’s taking a massive chance on fantastic value.

8. 1st Quarterback Drafted

PICK: Tua Tagovailoa +900

It’s going to be Joe Burrow to Cincinnati to kick it all off, but … go ahead with a total shot for the stars at +900.

Burrow is a -10000 value for the 1st quarterback drafted, but if you want to get crazy, it’s possible the Bengals could trade down. It’s not totally insane to think that they might like Tagovailoa better.
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

[lawrence-related id=510980]

7. 1st Offensive Lineman Drafted

PICK: Mekhi Becton +500

Welcome to the theme across this whole piece – never underestimate what NFL teams think of guys with freakish tools and abilities. To be warned, there’s a better 1st Offensive Lineman Drafted pick to be had, but Louisville’s Mekhi Becton is the best value shot.

Georgia’s Andrew Thomas at +750 isn’t bad, but there are three O lineman – Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, and Becton – who are all in the same bag. Pick one out, and you might have the right guy. The 365-pound Becton is a great value at what appears to be a 30% shot.
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

[lawrence-related id=510943]

6. 2nd Quarterback Drafted

PICK: Jordan Love +3500

Value, value, value.

It’s the one big question that no one seems to have a handle on – how do teams rank the top quarterbacks? Everyone’s being more coy than usual about this, and there’s a deafening silence when it comes to Utah State’s Jordan Love.

If we’re all in agreement that Joe Burrow is the first quarterback gone, how much is everyone worrying about Tua Tagovailoa’s hip? No, really, how big of a concern is it for a top five overall pick? He’s at -139 to be the second quarterback taken.

Justin Herbert is the stand up double of a call at +100. This might be a case of We Should’ve Seen It Coming – someone trades heaven and earth to move up to get him. However, at +3500, Love is an interesting call if someone sees something they really, really like.

Just how much do you believe in Jacob Eason?

According to BetMGM, the line has been set at 4.5 quarterbacks will be selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

It’s easy to get to three. It’ll take a little bit of a stretch to get to four, but even that’s not much of a concern.

Can you get to five?

The BetMGM odds are +340 at over 4.5, and -455 at under 4.5, so the value call is obviously hoping for Eason, or Jalen Hurts, or even Jake Fromm possibly slipping into the end of the first round.

Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert are mortal locks to be drafted in the first round, and Jordan Love is almost certain to go somewhere in the top 20. And that’s where the problem kicks in.

How many teams really need a quarterback badly enough to take one in the first round? And considering not too many will be freaking out to get one after the first four go, the value for most teams is to wait.

Here are the key factors in figuring out how many quarterbacks might be selected?

1. Again, who needs one?

Cincinnati (with the 1st overall pick), Miami (5, 18, 26), and the Los Angeles Chargers (6) definitely do. Jacksonville needs one, but it said it likes the Gardner Minshew experience – at least for now. However, it has two picks – the 9 and the 20 – to potentially take one.

But Las Vegas has the 12 and the 19 – it might use one of those to try to upgrade from Derek Carr.

Could New England take one at the 23? It doesn’t seem like a Bill Belichick thing to do, but with a ton of picks over the next two seasons, he might want to move up.

Green Bay could pull a 2005 – when it had Brett Favre but took Aaron Rodgers – but with the 30th pick, and being so close to a Super Bowl, it’s likely going to dive in with one extra piece to make another run.

And then there’s Indianapolis. It doesn’t have a first rounder, but it has the second pick in the second round. It might try to move up into Day One.

2. History

Five quarterbacks went in the first round in 1999. Tim Couch (1), Donovan McNabb (2), Akili Smith (3), Daunte Culpepper (11) and Cade McNown (12) were all snapped up. In the 20 drafts since then, how many times have five quarterbacks gone in the first round?

Once, and it was a massive prop bet moment in 2018 when Baltimore took Lamar Jackson with the 32nd overall pick.

One time in 20 years. History isn’t kind to the over on the 4.5.

3. The Market

Cam Newton is still out there. Jameis Winston is still out there. There are plenty of free agent quarterback possibilities and trade opportunities.

Do you really want to spend a first round pick on the fifth-best quarterback in the draft?

And finally …

4. Will There Be Football?

Think of it this way. If there wasn’t a 2019 college football season, Joe Burrow would be a mid-round flier, Tua Tagovailoa would be the No. 1 pick in the draft, and Justin Herbert would be an easy No. 2 choice.

What’s the field going to look like next year? There’s Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and a whole lot of guesses.

It’s possible that a team like Indianapolis with Phil Rivers, or New Orleans with Drew Brees, or Tampa Bay with Tom Brady decides to not mess around, take one in the first round, and groom the guy for 2022.

And The Call Is …

BetMGM Line: Over +340

Burrow, Herbert, Tagovailoa and Love are all going to go in the first round.

All it takes is one more.

Yes, you’re bucking history, and yes, it’s a buyer’s market out there for quarterbacks, but between Jacksonville, New England, Las Vegas and maybe a team with an aging legend like Pittsburgh, Green Bay or Tampa Bay, someone is going to bite.

Whether it’s Jacob Eason’s big-time arm and upside, or the potential that Jalen Hurts really is as good as he looked at Oklahoma, there are too many teams that might want to grab one late and get better value than what it will take to get the other four quarterbacks.

First 3 Draft Picks Exact Outcome

Here is where you get to have some fun.

What are the first three picks in the 2020 NFL Draft going to be?

Do you go chalk? If you do, you still come out fine, but if you can read the tea leaves and nail the possible trades, then you’re rolling.

BetMGM has 20 possible outcomes for how the first three picks are going to go. Here’s the ranking of the best value/possible outcome, to the ones that have absolutely no chance.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

As it stands right now, the first draft order for the first three picks goes 1. Cincinnati, 2. Washington, 3. Detroit.

Keep in mind that Washington doesn’t need a quarterback and might trade, Detroit might give some thought to taking a quarterback if it doesn’t like Matthew Stafford anymore, but it might trade out of the pick to someone who desperately needs a QB.

So with all of that in mind, the 20 possible BetMGM scenarios you can get in on. Starting with the combination of the most improbable/worst value …

20. 1. Burrow, 2. Tagovailoa, 3. Derrick Brown

BetMGM Line: +30000

Auburn DT Derrick Brown is rising up in the various mocks, but the idea that Chase Young AND Jeff Okudah won’t go in the top three just doesn’t work.

19. 1. Burrow, 2. Young, 3. Brown

BetMGM Line: +4000

Call this the anti-Brown call. Nothing against him, and you can get the first two parts of this right, but he’s not going in the top three.

18. 1. Tagovailoa, 2. Young, 3. Herbert

BetMGM Line: +25000

There’s no Burrow? If Burrow doesn’t go at the 1, someone will trade up for him. At worst, he goes at the 3.

17. 1. Tagovailoa, 2. Young, 3. Okudah

BetMGM Line: +15000

If you think Burrow is going to slide and Cincinnati is going with Tagovailoa, then this is a jackpot pick. Don’t bank on Burrow not going in the top three, though.

16. 1. Burrow, 2. Tagovailoa, 3. Simmons

BetMGM Line: +15000

You’re not only asking for Young to not go in the top three, but for Isaiah Simmons to find his way in over Jeff Okudah. It’s not totally crazy, but this only works if something big and bad comes out about Young.

15. 1. Burrow, 2. Tagovailoa, 3. Okudah

BetMGM Line: +4000

Do you really believe Young will fall out of the top three? You can talk yourself into this if you think someone might trade up to the 2 for Tagovailoa.

14. 1. Tagovailoa, 2. Burrow, 3. Okudah

BetMGM Line: +30000

Again, no Chase Young. Throw in the call that Tagovailoa goes first, and now you’re trying to project a whole slew of trades.

13. 1. Herbert, 2. Burrow, 3. Young

BetMGM Line: +6000

There are a whole lot of things that have to go your way to make this work, and it starts with Cincinnati liking Herbert over Burrow. It also means a big trade by Washington at the 2.

12. 1. Tagovailoa, 2. Young, 3. Burrow

BetMGM Line: +6000

This isn’t all that bad. If you have it in your head that Cincinnati might really like Tagovailoa, then assuming Young at the 2 is easy, and Burrow will get snapped up at the 3 after the Lions trade out.

11. 1. Burrow, 2. Young, 3. Simmons

BetMGM Line: +1400

This isn’t totally off-the-wall. Opinions are all over the board on Simmons in the top ten, and he could easily end up going third. However, the +1400 value isn’t quite as strong as some of the other big calls you could make.

New Customer Offer … RISK-FREE FIRST BET up to $500 paid in free bets. Sign Up Here with BetMGM

10. 1. Burrow, 2. Young, 3. Love

BetMGM Line: +5000

It would be nice if the value was a little stronger here. No one has a clue at the moment how the teams are viewing Jordan Love and the top quarterbacks, but for this to work, someone has to trade up to the 3 AND take Love. Parts 1 and 2 are fine, but 3?

9. 1. Tagovailoa, 2. Burrow, 3. Young

BetMGM Line: +5000

I just don’t see Cincinnati going Tagovailoa over Burrow. For this to work, Washington has to trade out of the 2 to someone who won’t take Young.

8. 1. Herbert, 2. Young, 3. Burrow

BetMGM Line: +10000

For the value, this is fantastic. Everyone will have Herbert as the best tools quarterback of the bunch, and it’s not insane to think Cincinnati will want to go with the guy with the NFL arm over the guy who has a questionable gun.

7. 1. Burrow, 2. Tagovailoa, 3. Love

BetMGM Line: +15000

LOVE this for the value. Don’t be the slightest bit shocked if the teams looking for quarterbacks all freak out and try to move into the top three. At +15000 … okay.

6. 1. Tagovailoa, 2. Burrow, 3. Herbert

BetMGM Line: +30000

On the same theory that teams are going to go insane trying to move up to grab quarterbacks, here’s your big call for +30000. We don’t quite know exactly what teams think of Tagovailoa’s hip injury.

5. 1. Burrow, 2. Young, 3. Herbert

BetMGM Line: +400

It would be nice if this was a wee bit stronger than +400, but this is still a totally viable option. Someone will love Herbert, and it’s possible someone will move up to get him.

4. 1. Burrow, 2. Young, 3. Okudah

BetMGM Line: +140

There’s nothing boring about winning. It’s the chalk top three call, and it’s the most likely scenario. Take it, make your coin, and get out.

3. 1. Burrow, 2. Tagovailoa, 3. Herbert

BetMGM Line: +3000

If you believe in the quarterback chaos theory – and I sort of do – that teams will panic to get into position to take the top three, here you go for +3000.

2. 1. Burrow, 2, Young, 3. Tagovailoa

BetMGM Line: +250

The value isn’t that great, but assume someone wants Tagovailoa and will pay the premium to trade up with Detroit to do it, but this is just at +250, so …

1. 1. Burrow, 2. Tagovailoa, 3. Young

BetMGM Line: +1000

Go for the +1000 call. Cincinnati is going to take Joe Burrow No. 1, and Washington will shop the heck out of its No. 2 pick. As long as the Miami or LA Charger medical staff like what they see out of Tua Tagovailoa’s workout and health, it’s the power move that has to be made. If you want the former Bama star, it might take the No. 2 overall pick to do it.

3rd Overall Pick: Detroit Lions

And now is when this gets really, REALLY funky.

Just assume LSU QB Joe Burrow is going first overall, and if not, he’s going second. If he’s not the first overall pick, then Ohio State DE Chase Young will be a mortal lock to be the main man. If it’s Burrow at the 1, it’ll be Young at the 2, unless …

Washington trades out of it.

Just how much does Washington believe in Dwayne Haskins? There are some rumblings out there – more like bored musings in the time of quarantine – that the Redskins might think about one of the top quarterbacks on the board, but that’s not going to happen.

The more likely curveball at the two will come with a trade. Miami has three first round picks and desperately needs a quarterback – it might try to move up to the two just so no one else sneaks ahead with a trade up with Washington to snag Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa or Oregon’s Justin Herbert.

And then Detroit snaps up Young with the 3.

Or, this goes chalk and Cincinnati takes Burrow, Washington grabs Young, and Detroit trades out of the 3 to someone moving up to grab a quarterback.

So if you ‘re trying to bet the 3, where do you go? This is where you have to make a big call, but if you hit it … BOOM.

With all of that in mind, using a combination of likelihood and value for the bet, rank the possible 2020 NFL Draft Third Overall Picks on the BetMGM board like this …

One quick note, BetMGM doesn’t have Oregon QB Justin Herbert on the board for this pick, otherwise he’d be on the list.

5. QB Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

BetMGM Line: +140

The value isn’t good enough. It’s hardly a bad call putting Tagovailoa at the 3, but 1) someone has to trade up, or 2) Detroit takes him and decides it’s moving on from Matthew Stafford, and 3) everyone blows off Herbert and a slew of other great options for the slot. The odds are more likely that Detroit goes with …

4. CB Jeff Okudah, Ohio State

BetMGM Line: +125

It’s the chalk pick, but there’s not a whole lot of value considering the trade rumors and buzz are way too loud for the slot. Detroit needs defensive back help, and Okudah is about as sure-thing safe as it gets. You’re still on the plus side so there’s coin to be made, but you’re not going to be comfortable.

3. QB Jordan Love, Utah State

BetMGM Line: +15000

It’s the value shot for the stars. Everyone is assuming it’s Burrow at the 1 – or 2, at worst – and then it’s all about where Tagovailoa and Herbert are going to fall. Not to get all weird, but you know something is up in an NFL draft when everyone is too quiet about a pick. It’s not insane to think a few teams out there really, really like Love enough move up to the 3.

2. LB Isaiah Simmons, Clemson

BetMGM Line: +800

Here’s the thing about the 3 – Simmons is one of the three best players in this year’s NFL draft. The best three in this thing are Young, Okudah and Simmons – they’re all central casting prototypes at their respective positions – and it’s possible Detroit likes this killer of a hybrid linebacker more than Okudah. The value is certainly there to take the chance.

And finally …

[lawrence-related id=510465]

1. DE Chase Young, Ohio State

BetMGM Line: +1000

This is a whole lot more possible than you might think, and why?

Burrow goes No. 1 overall, and someone falls in love with Tua or Herbert. That team gets freaked out that trading with Detroit at the 3 isn’t going to get it done, and it doesn’t want to risk someone else moving up to the 2 to steal its franchise quarterback.

It could very, very easily go quarterback 1, quarterback 2, and then YOINK … Detroit takes Young in one of the fastest picks in the history of the draft.

2nd Overall Pick

Of course Joe Burrow will go with the No. 1 overall pick to Cincinnati … right?

How many trades will there be between now and draft day? How many teams are going to try moving up and around for the No. 1 overall pick, or more importantly for this, No. 2?

It seems like a mortal lock that Burrow will go with the first selection to be the possible franchise-maker for the Bengals, and then it’s supposed to be Ohio State pass rushing star Chase Young ready to go to Washington.

The key to figuring out the 2 will be guessing how desperate teams are for a quarterback, and if there’s any interest in trading up for it.

There’s always the crazy possibility that Washington will pull a Josh Rosen and bail on its first round quarterback pick of the previous year – Dwayne Haskins – like Arizona did to select Kyler Murray in the 2019 NFL Draft, but … nah. No chance.

Detroit almost certainly isn’t going to take a quarterback at the 3, and the New York Giants aren’t going with one at the 4 after all the hoo-ha it took selecting Danny “Dimes” Jones last year.

But Miami needs a quarterback at the 5.

This is where it’ll get scary to try betting on the 2.

[lawrence-related id=510465]

Let’s say Miami goes 2017 Chicago Bears and freaks out that someone might move up to take the quarterback it wants. The Bears traded with San Francisco to move up from the 3 to the 2 to take Mitchell Trubisky – yeeesh – and this year, maybe Miami really wants Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert. With three first round picks – the 5, 18 and 26 – and two in the second round, the Dolphins can spend to ensure they get their franchise quarterback.

Jacksonville needs a quarterback, and it has the 9 and the 20 to play around with, along with the 42nd overall pick in the second round. Will it make a move to jump ahead of Miami?

Tyrod Taylor? Nah – the Los Angeles Chargers need a quarterback to build around. They only have seven picks in this draft – as opposed to the 12 of the Jaguars – and they’d have to spend big to move up from the 6 to get past Miami at the 5.

Long build-up short, a few teams out there might panic to move up into the No. 2 spot, and it won’t be to take Young.

With all of that in mind, using a combination of likelihood and value for the bet, rank the 2020 NFL Draft Second Overall Picks on the BetMGM board like this …

1. QB Justin Herbert, Oregon +3500
Don’t be shocked it some teams love him more than the scouts do. GREAT value for a franchise QB who could go No. 2

2. QB Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama +180
The only reason he’s a step below is because the value isn’t as great. A strong workout could make him a must-have to trade up for.

3. QB Jordan Love, Utah State +20,000
Value, value, value, value, value. There’s absolutely no doubt whatsoever that a few teams have him as the No. 1 QB on their boards. At +20,000, this is the shot for the stars.

4. QB Joe Burrow, LSU +2500
Value-wise, it’s not that insane to think that Cincinnati might get weird at the last possible second and like Young or even a seemingly healthy Tagovailoa. The value for Burrow to slide one spot isn’t bad.

5. DE Chase Young, Ohio State -286
Fine – he’s almost certainly the second overall pick. However, again, he’s not a great value play at -286. You’re better off projecting mild chaos and potential quarterback craziness.

1st Overall Pick

At the moment, the Cincinnati Bengals have the No. 1 overall pick, and they’re going to take Joe Burrow. However …

If they want to go a different direction, they can trade down.

Miami has three first round picks – the 5, 18 and 26. It has made no secret that it would love to have Burrow, and it has the picks to give the Bengals a sweet deal to jump up to the 1.

Can the Patriots figure something out, and do they want to? Bill Belichick has the 23rd overall pick, three third rounders, and a whole lot to work with in 2021.

But no matter what, Burrow appears set to be the No. 1 guy up top.  That’s why there’s no value whatsoever.

So in terms of betting value, there’s little to gain from going with Burrow. If you’re going to go with a shot for the stars, it’s possible Cincinnati is in love with Justin Herbert – the Oregon quarterback has far better tools than Burrow – or even  decide that it’s not going to mess around and take Chase Young.

Would Bengal fans be that mad if an elite pass rusher goes first, and their team tries to fill the quarterback void – in a buyer’s market – through trade, free agency, or with a Jacob Eason or Jake Fromm with the 33rd overall pick?

Using a combination of likelihood and value for the bet, rank the 2020 NFL Draft First Overall Picks on the BetMGM board like this …

1. QB Joe Burrow, LSU -3334
2. DE Chase Young, Ohio State +1100
3. QB Justin Herbert, Oregon +3600
4. QB Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama +1900
5. LB Isaiah Simmons, Clemson +10,000
