Jaguars interested in ‘only one’ playoff scenario: Win and in

Doug Pederson is only interested in one path to the playoffs for the Jaguars.

There are two paths to the postseason for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who currently sit atop a three-way tie for the AFC South lead. They could beat the Tennessee Titans on Sunday and defend their title as division champs. The other scenario isn’t one Jaguars coach Doug Pederson is interested in thinking about.

“There’s only one,” Pederson said. “There’s only one that matters right now for us. … That’s all I need to tell the team. There’s nothing other than trying to win this game on Sunday.”

If the Jaguars manage to beat the Titans in Nashville on Sunday, they’d own the No. 4 seed in the AFC and host the Cleveland Browns in the wild card round.

There is a backdoor into the postseason if Jacksonville loses, though. If the Baltimore Ravens, who have secured the No. 1 seed, beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, the Jaguars would only need the Las Vegas Raiders to beat the Denver Broncos on Sunday if they lose to the Titans.

“I’m not going to cloud their mind with stuff,” Pederson said. “Obviously, our focus is trying to beat Tennessee and regardless of records and who’s playing and who’s not playing, this is always a really good football game and it’s a four-quarter game. That’s our focus right now.”

The Jaguars have won the AFC South just twice since its creation in 2002 and never in back-to-back seasons. During their tenure in the AFC Central, Jacksonville won the division title in the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

NFL playoff picture: Jaguars clinching, elimination scenarios for Week 18

The Jaguars’ path to the playoffs is pretty simple with one week left.

The path to the postseason isn’t hard to figure out for the Jacksonville Jaguars anymore.

While the Jaguars blew the doors off the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, they didn’t get much help elsewhere. The Houston Texans blew out the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts held off a second half surge from the Las Vegas Raiders.

It’s all pretty simple now: if the Jaguars beat the Titans next week in Nashville, they’ll be AFC South champions. If they lose, they’ll need some help to keep their season alive.

With only one weekend of regular season play left, here’s every postseason scenario for the Jaguars heading into Week 18:

NFL playoff picture: Jaguars clinching scenario for Week 17

Somehow, the Jaguars have a chance to clinch a spot in the playoffs on New Year’s Eve, despite their disastrous December.

Somehow, some way, the Jacksonville Jaguars have an opportunity to clinch the AFC South on New Year’s Eve.

Despite losing their first four games of December, including a blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Christmas Eve, the Jaguars are still atop the AFC South standings. They’re currently tied with the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans, both of which lost in two of the last three weeks. Jacksonville owns the tiebreakers, though.

That makes the formula for the Jaguars to clinch a postseason berth in Week 17 pretty simple:

  1. Jaguars beat the Panthers
  2. Raiders beat the Colts
  3. Titans beat the Texans

If those three results come to fruition, the Jaguars would improve to 9-7 and both the Colts and Texans would drop to 8-8. Even if Jacksonville lost its regular season finale against Tennessee, a season sweep over Indianapolis and a superior divisional record than Houston would be enough.

If the Texans or Colts win, Jacksonville can’t do enough to guarantee itself a wild card berth in Week 17, though. Even if the Jaguars win and other teams in the mix (like the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals) all lose in Week 17, it’d only take a scenario where the Jaguars and Bengals are tied for the last spot after Week 18 for Jacksonville to be left out.

The clearest path to the postseason for the Jaguars, despite their recent tailspin, remains the AFC South title.
