Former Wisconsin Badgers running back reenters transfer portal

Former Wisconsin Badgers running back re-enters transfer portal

Former Wisconsin running back Jalen Berger reentered the transfer portal on Tuesday.

The former four-star recruit played the last two seasons at Michigan State after leaving the Wisconsin program during the 2021 season.

Berger had a big 2022 in East Lansing, leading the team with 683 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 148 carries. 2023 was a big step back, however, as a leg injury limited the former Badger to just five games and 25 total carries.

Michigan State is in the midst of a transition under new head coach Jonathan Smith. Berger was one of several running backs to return from the 2023 team, though it’s hard to project how much work he would’ve gotten.

The Ramsey, New Jersey, native was a member of Wisconsin’s class of 2020, ranked as the No. 136 player in the class and No. 20 running back. He burst onto the scene as a true freshman in 2020 before his role evaporated in 2021, a behind-the-scenes saga that finished with his dismissal from the program.

Berger’s talent is undeniable. He’ll just need to find a new home with more stability to showcase that talent.

One of Wisconsin’s top Chucky Hepburn replacement options to return to UNC

Another potential transfer option off the board for the Badgers:

Take another one of Wisconsin basketball’s top Chucky Hepburn replacement options off the board.

First, former Texas and Iowa State guard Tyrese Hunter committed to Memphis. Now, North Carolina point guard Seth Trimble has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal and will return to UNC.

Trimble averaged 17.1 minutes, 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.4 steals on 47% shooting and 41% from 3 as a sophomore at North Carolina in 2023-24. The former top-30 recruit was formerly one of Wisconsin’s top recruiting options coming out of high school.

The Wisconsin native is not the only significant Tar Heel returning for 2024-25: senior guard R.J. Davis will return as well, according to CBSSports’ Matt Norlander.

Our top options for Wisconsin to replace Hepburn were Hunter, Trimble, rising sophomore John Blackwell and incoming 2024 point guard Daniel Freitag. The job is trending toward being all Freitag’s now that the two big-time transfers are off the board.

Wisconsin basketball is in need of a jolt from the transfer portal. Recent days have seen most of the program’s top targets commit elsewhere, including Hunter, Frankie Fidler and Brandon Angel.

Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback re-enters transfer portal

Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback re-enters transfer portal

Former Wisconsin Badgers and Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Deacon Hill has re-entered the transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

The veteran quarterback started nine games for the Hawkeyes in 2023, leading the team to a 6-3 record while completing just 48.6% of his passes for 1,152 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Related: An updated list of Wisconsin basketball’s transfer portal targets

Hill transferred to Iowa after two years at Wisconsin. He originally joined the Badgers as a three-star recruit in the class of 2021, then spent 2021 and most of 2022 at Wisconsin before entering the portal after the Badgers fired head coach Paul Chryst.

He committed to Iowa for the 2023 season and was slated to be the Hawkeyes’ backup until starter Cade McNamara suffered a leg injury early in the season.

Hill surprisingly led the team to a 6-1 record in his first seven games including an upset win at Wisconsin. Luck did run out for the Hawkeyes down the stretch of the season, but Hill did what was asked for the program’s defense-first approach.

The veteran was slated to again be the backup in 2024 with McNamara back for a final collegiate season. He enters the portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

BREAKING: Wisconsin football receives transfer commitment from SEC offensive tackle

Luke Fickell lands his first transfer of the spring window:

Wisconsin football just made its first splash in the spring transfer portal window.

It landed a commitment from former Vanderbilt offensive tackle Leyton Nelson.

Related: Wisconsin football 2024 spring transfer portal window tracker

Nelson entered the transfer portal on April 16 after playing in 11 games for the Commodores in 2023. He follows former Vanderbilt offensive line coach A.J. Blazek to Madison — Blazek who the Badgers hired this offseason after re-assigning former OL coach Jack Bicknell after the 2023 season.

Nelson is 247Sports’ No. 652 player in the transfer portal and No. 39 offensive tackle. He was originally a three-star recruit in the class of 2022.

Nelson brings experience, but he will likely play a depth role along the offensive line with Wisconsin’s starting lineup mostly set. He has several years of eligibility remaining and could play himself into a starting role in 2025, while also serving as valuable depth this upcoming season.

Former Wisconsin guard to announce transfer commitment later today (Sunday, April 21)

Former Wisconsin guard to announce transfer commitment later today

Former Wisconsin guard Connor Essegian will announce his transfer commitment at 3 p.m. central, 4 p.m. eastern on Sunday, April 21.

The fan-favorite guard earned plenty of interest after entering the transfer portal on March 24. He’s taken official visits to Ole Miss and to Big Ten rivals Nebraska, Maryland and Indiana.

Related: An updated list of Wisconsin basketball’s transfer portal targets

Essegian recently received an On3 transfer prediction to choose the Big Ten rival Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The sharpshooter struggled in 2023-24 after losing much of his playing time, averaging just 7.3 minutes and 3.2 points per game. There remains promise from his freshman season, however, which saw the guard average 27.4 minutes and 11.7 points.

Essegian is one of numerous Wisconsin Badgers to have entered the transfer portal since the end of the season. A.J. Storr has already committed to Kansas, while Chucky Hepburn, Gus Yalden and others remain uncommitted.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin is still working to replace the minutes, production and experience of departed starters Hepburn, Storr and Tyler Wahl. Essegian is another loss to add to that list — as his role would’ve likely increased in 2024-25.

All signs now point towards him suiting up for a Big Ten rival.

UPDATE: Essegian committed to Nebraska at 3 p.m. central

Wisconsin likely out of the running for one of the transfer portal’s top forwards

The Chucky Hepburn transfer news has more ramifications

Wisconsin basketball is likely no longer an option for top transfer portal forward Frankie Fidler.

That statement shouldn’t come as much of a surprise after Wisconsin star point guard Chucky Hepburn entered the transfer portal on Thursday. Hepburn was a substantial part of the recruiting pitch — as he and Fidler were high school teammates in Nebraska.

Related: An updated look at Wisconsin basketball’s 2024-25 roster after Chucky Hepburn’s departure

Wisconsin was among Fidler’s final four schools alongside Michigan State, Creighton and Nebraska. The former Omaha wing was scheduled to announce his commitment on Monday but ended up delaying the announcement. Then Hepburn entered the portal three days later. It isn’t hard to draw a connection between the two situations.

Fidler is 247Sports’ No. 64 overall transfer and No. 13 small forward. He’s coming off an exceptional 2023-24 season at Omaha, during which he averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 45% shooting and 35% from three.

The talented wing is reportedly now leaning toward Michigan State. Though given the nature of the transfer portal, things can change very quickly.

Head coach Greg Gard and his coaching staff must go back to the drawing board to find replacements for Hepburn, star wing A.J. Storr and veteran forward Tyler Wahl.

Wisconsin transfer defensive lineman T.J. Bollers receives several D-I offers

Wisconsin transfer defensive lineman T.J. Bollers receives several D-I offers

Wisconsin transfer defensive lineman T.J. Bollers is receiving plenty of interest from D-I programs.

He has already received offers from New Mexico, Kent State, Ohio, Northern Iowa, Miami (Ohio) and Cal after entering the transfer portal just four days ago.

Conference realignment makes this exercise a challenge. But that’s an offer from the Mountain West, four from the MAC and one from the ACC.

Related: Wisconsin football 2024 spring transfer portal window tracker

Bollers entered the portal after three unproductive years as a Badger. He was a four-star recruit in Wisconsin’s decorated class of 2021 — ranked as the No. 159 overall recruit in the class, No. 11 edge rusher and No. 2 recruit from his home state of Iowa.

Wisconsin attempted to move him from a 3-4 outside linebacker in Jim Leonhard’s old system to a defensive lineman in Mike Tressel’s hybrid 3-3-5. Neither role perfectly fit his game, as he’s better served as a 4-3 defensive end. That was seen in Bollers’ lack of playing time in his three years with the program.

His transfer is likely due to the fit on the field and finding a location with consistent playing time available.

Wisconsin is becoming increasingly thin along the defensive line. Only James Thompson Jr. and Curt Neal are back as experienced contributors, plus Albany transfer Elijah Hills. Luke Fickell and his staff need to find upgrades and depth at the position before the spring transfer portal window grinds to a halt.

ESPN suggests Saints package Trevor Penning in a trade for his replacement

ESPN has a unique trade proposal for the Saints, suggesting they package Trevor Penning in a trade for his replacement:

There’s a real possibility the New Orleans Saints could call it quits on the Trevor Penning experiment. If they can find a better left tackle in the 2024 NFL draft, it’s worth moving him to guard or right tackle to play the better player — and it just might be worth moving him to a new team altogether if it means they can go get that better left tackle.

That’s the scenario offered by ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, who drew up trades for every team picking in the first round of this year’s draft. If there’s a possibility the Saints could package Penning in a deal to move up and get this year’s top tackle (whoever they prefer; Notre Dame stud Joe Alt is the consensus pick to be first off the board), Barnwell says they should do it.

Here’s why Barnwell argues the Saints should trade Penning to the Los Angeles Chargers, along with their second-round pick at No. 45, in a big move up from No. 14 to No. 5:

If there’s no market in the top six to move up for a quarterback, the Saints might be able to jump ahead of the line to grab their favorite tackle in this class. The Chargers don’t have to trade down and could comfortably consider a wide receiver or tackle themselves at No. 5, but they’re also a team that could stand to add extra draft capital. (So are the Saints, of course, but why would GM Mickey Loomis start trading down in Round 1 now?)

Moving up would cost the Saints their second-round pick and the guy they thought was going to be their left tackle of the future in Penning, who looks and feels like he needs a change of scenery after two disastrous seasons. Penning missed most of 2022 with an injury, and after starting 2023 on the left side, he was benched in Week 6 and barely played the rest of the way. The Chargers already have Rashawn Slater locking down the left side of the line, but Penning could compete with Trey Pipkins at right tackle or serve as the swing tackle. This deal would value him as being worth the 88th pick in the draft by the Jimmy Johnson chart.

That would exciting, sure. Alt has everything you look for in a franchise left tackle. He’s an exceptional athlete with plenty of starting experience at a blueblood college program. He’s a much better prospect now than Penning was coming out of college a couple of years ago. Alt could immediately slot into the left tackle spot and allow the Saints to focus on plugging holes at right tackle and left guard, among other positions.

But there’s the problem: they’ve got almost nothing left to work with after this trade. The Saints wouldn’t pick again until No. 150 in the fifth round after trading their picks in the first and second rounds to move up. This team is not one player away. They need to be careful spenders on draft day and target safe picks who can help them right away. Beyond the offensive line, there are big vulnerabilities along the defensive line, at wide receiver, tight end, safety, and running back. There are more unsettled position groups than sure things.

It’s funny — the Saints have finally given their critics (like Barnwell) the offseason that’s been asked of them. They’ve spent conservatively in free agency without moving more money around than necessary in their usual restructures. They’re poised to clear big salary cap hits for Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara, if they choose, over the next year or two. The situation is significantly less grim than it once was. But Barnwell still expects them to throw caution to the wind, reverse course, and steer right for the rocks. We’ll see if that’s the plan come draft day.

LSU prospect Maason Smith met with Saints on pre-draft visit

Could the Saints finally hold that tiger? LSU defensive tackle Maason Smith made a visit to the team facility before the 2024 draft:

Could this be the year the New Orleans Saints make LSU fans happy? The Saints have been linked to several prominent Tigers prospects in the 2024 NFL draft, having hosted wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. at their local pro day while sending a huge contingent of coaches, scouts, and other team personnel to LSU’s pro day workouts.

And we can add LSU defensive tackle Maason Smith to the list of players they’ve met with before the 2024 draft. Smith told The Draft Network’s Justin Melo that the Saints were the first  of many formal visits he’s made in recent weeks: “I started off in New Orleans with the Saints last week. I flew to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. I also met with the Jets and Giants. I went to Minnesota, Buffalo, Green Bay, and Charlotte. I just got back from Arizona. I have a few more visits coming up later this week.”

Smith is from Houma, La., which is an hour’s drive from New Orleans, so he should count as a local prospect and not factor into the limit of 30 players the Saints can host on official visits. Teams are obviously intrigued by the former five-star high school recruit, but questions have been raised by media analysts centering on his lack of production at LSU. The Tigers were too easily beaten at the point of attack for a unit with such a strong recruiting pedigree.

Smith acknowledged that disparity himself, telling Melo: “I’m going to continue getting better at the next level. I think my potential means I can do whatever I need to do to be whoever I want to be. The sky’s the limit for me. I’m looking forward to reaching that potential. … I want to be an impact player for whichever organization drafts me. I’m excited for my rookie season. I want to set the tone for what’s going to be a successful career.”

Still, Smith finished his LSU career with 944 defensive snaps played in 20 games — with 6.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss, respectable numbers for a defensive tackle on that sample size. But you’d like to have seen more from him. Maybe NFL coaching in a professional environment can get more out of him. Smith’s projections are all over the place but he’s generally expected to  be picked in the third or fourth rounds of this year’s draft. Maybe he ends up staying in Louisiana.

BREAKING: Wisconsin star guard Chucky Hepburn enters transfer portal

BREAKING: Wisconsin basketball star guard Chucky Hepburn enters transfer portal

Wisconsin basketball star guard Chucky Hepburn is entering the transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.

The shocking news comes after the Badgers already lost top guard A.J. Storr to the portal earlier in the offseason.

Related: Tracking Wisconsin basketball’s reported transfer portal visits and targets

Hepburn moves on after three decorated years with the Badgers. He played in 103 games, averaging 32.1 minutes, 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals on 42% shooting and 36% from three.

The former four-star recruit was a substantial part of Wisconsin’s stellar Big Ten-winning 2021-22 team. No postseason success followed, but he was the undisputed face of the last three years of Wisconsin basketball.

He enters the portal with one year of eligibility remaining.

Greg Gard and his staff must now return to the drawing board to find replacements for Hepburn, Storr and forward Tyler Wahl entering next season.
