C.J. Stroud would take career similar to Eli Manning versus Aaron Rodgers

C.J. Stroud would take career similar to Eli Manning versus Aaron Rodgers

The ultimate goal for a player in the NFL is to win the Super Bowl and forever wear the championship ring. If you’re lucky enough, you get to do so multiple times. That’s no different for Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud. He would love a ring or two. So how do the Jets fall into this story?

Enter Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Stroud appeared on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game Podcast” on Sunday and was asked if he would prefer having a career like Rodgers or one like former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. As you may have guessed by now, he did not pick Rodgers.

“You want the rings,” said Stroud, via CBS Sports. “Eli got two.”

Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers while Manning defeated the Patriots in two Super Bowls, XLII and XLVI.

Stroud also went as far as to say that if a quarterback like Matthew Stafford had the help that Rodgers has had over his career, he’d have more Super Bowl wins.

“If you give Matthew Stafford a chance like Aaron Rodgers had, I guarantee you he might have had more rings,” Stroud said. “I’d say he would have like three or four.”

Stroud was a bit young, just seven years old, when Stafford came into the league in 2009 as the No. 1 pick of the Detroit Lions. But back then, Stafford had some guy by the name of Calvin Johnson to throw to. Johnson is now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Also, as Bill Barnwell noted on Around the Horn Wednesday, Stafford had just one top-five scoring defense throughout his career in Detroit and did not win a playoff game. Rodgers had the same number of top-five scoring defenses. That was the season he won the Super Bowl.

Whether or not Stroud was taking a shot at Rodgers is up for debate. Regardless, this will add some bulletin-board material for when the Texans visit the Jets on Halloween night in Week 9. When the teams met last December, Stroud went 10/23 for just 91 yards before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with a concussion.

Even with win, Jets keep hold of top-10 pick in 2024 draft

The Jets beat the Texans in Week 14 and still hold a top-10 draft pick, which isn’t a bad combination.

You could say the Jets got the best of both worlds in their 30-6 win over the Houston Texans. They get a much-needed win with a dominant performance over a playoff contender. They also remain inside the top ten of the current order for the 2024 NFL Draft.

The win over the Texans moved the Jets to 5-8 on the season. After Sunday’s action, the Jets are among four teams sitting at 5-8 — the Jets are tied with the Bears, Raiders and Chargers. The Jets have the third-easiest schedule among the four teams, ahead of only the Chargers. At the moment, the Jets would sit with the No. 9 pick in the draft.

Unless the Carolina Panthers make a miraculous turnaround in the final four weeks, they’ll end up with the worst record in the NFL and gift the No. 1 pick to the Bears. The Patriots and Cardinals both sit at 3-10 followed by the Commanders at 4-9. Then it’s two teams playing on Monday night, the Giants and Titans, sitting at 4-8 and then the group of 5-8 teams including the Jets.

The win may have kept faint playoff hopes alive but with six teams at 7-6 and a lot of them playing each other over the final four weeks, the odds are very miniscule for the Jets to crash the postseason party. So for most, it’s tracking Tankathon over the final four weeks.

Wes Schweitzer out, Carter Warren questionable as Jets set to start 9th straight game with different line combination

With Wes Schweitzer out and Carter Warren questionable, the Jets could start their 9th straight game with a different line combination.

The Jets just can’t catch a break when it comes to injuries on the offensive line. Two players who started Week 13 against the Falcons are hurt and have a game designation for Week 14 against the Texans.

Guard Wes Schweitzer, who had just returned from a calf injury, is out Sunday after seemingly re-aggravating the injury.

In addition, a new injury popped up Friday as rookie Carter Warren was limited Friday with a hip injury. Warren has started the last two weeks between left and right tackle.

With the injuries, Week 14 will mark the ninth straight game with a different offensive line combination for the Jets. The last game the Jets played with the same line as the week before was Week 5 against the Denver Broncos — the combo of Mekhi Becton, Laken Tomlinson, Connor McGovern, Joe Tippmann and Alijah Vera-Tucker had started for the third week in a row before Vera-Tucker suffered his season-ending Achilles injury.

This also could mean the 10th different starting line this season for the Jets. If Warren can’t play, could the Jets put Duane Brown back at left tackle and move Becton to right?

Just like last season, the Jets have been crushed with offensive line injuries. Head coach Robert Saleh praised the work of all the offensive linemen especially after the constant shuffling of the group.

“Last year was carnage, and I don’t know if there’s another word for it, but you know what I do want to say this about our o-line. The guys are working their tails off,” Saleh said. “There’s a lot of guys who are taking the field who just got here, and learning a scheme, and grinding to try to put their best foot forward and put together good tape. So, a lot of credit to those guys.

“Guys moving all over the line of scrimmage. Carter Warren’s going from left to right, you got [Joe] Tippmann going from guard to center. You got Iron Man on the left guard has been getting better every week with Laken [Tomlinson] and then of course, just all the way across the board and it’s credit to them, love the five we have lining up. Think they have a chance to be pretty good. Just need to get them some continuity so they can figure out how to work together and become the group that we think they can be.”

Breece Hall questionable, Saleh ‘feels good about gameday’

Jets running back Breece Hall is questionable for Sunday against the Texans but Robert Saleh thinks he’ll be good to go.

Jets running back Breece Hall is questionable for Sunday against the Houston Texans with an ankle injury.

Hall did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but did return in a limited fashion Friday. Head coach Robert Saleh didn’t sound too worried about Hall’s availability for Sunday.

“Yeah, he’s dealing with an ankle,” Saleh said. “It’s just trying to get him comfortable, but we feel good about game day.”

Hall also felt good about his chances of playing this week even with missing two days of practice. Being able to return to practice Friday is a good sign for him being available.

The Jets have Dalvin Cook and Israel Abanikanda on the active roster plus fullback Nick Bawden. New York also has Xazavian Valladay on the practice squad.

Zach Wilson ready to have more fun after returning to starting lineup

Back in the starting lineup, Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is ready to have some fun.

Zach Wilson has gone from QB2 to QB1 to QB3 and now back to QB1 after head coach Robert Saleh named him the starter for Week 14 against the Houston Texans.

Just three weeks after being benched against the Buffalo Bills in Week 11, the Jets are turning back to Wilson after benching Tim Boyle during the Week 13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Boyle was released this week as the team signed Brett Rypien.

Wilson is “fired up” as Saleh put it and is ready to have some fun.

“I was excited,” Wilson said about his reaction to hearing the news from Saleh that he is starting. “I think any opportunity that you get in this League is a good one. I think more than anything, the love and care I have for these guys, especially this year.

“For some reason, it has been challenging, I think everyone has felt that, but I am extremely excited to get back on the field with these guys.”

The Athletic reported earlier in the week Wilson was reluctant to return to the starting lineup, citing a concern over a potential injury risk. Wilson shot down those reports, saying he did meet with Saleh before the head coach met with the media Monday.

“Yeah, I was already in there [with Saleh] that morning,” Wilson said. “We were catching up on some other stuff and the opportunity just got brought up and I told him I wanted the ball, that I appreciate him, and I think any opportunity is a good opportunity and to take advantage of it.”

Wilson added he loves the players in the locker room and would do anything for them. “I think any time you have an opportunity to step onto this field, you need to take advantage of it.”

Wilson will make his 10th start this season. He is 3-6 with six passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. The offense took even more of a nosedive in the last two weeks with Boyle starting and Wilson as the No. 3 quarterback.

Boyle threw just one touchdown pass and the Jets totaled 19 points in losses to the Dolphins and Falcons — cornerback Brandin Echols had a pick-six against the Dolphins.

Saleh said Wednesday Wilson gives the Jets the best chance to win. He was simply looking for a spark with either Boyle or Trevor Siemian. It never happened. Wilson now gets five more games — Saleh said barring injury Wilson will start the rest of the season — to salvage his career. New York finishes against Houston, Miami, Washington, Cleveland and New England.

He’s back, back again: Zach Wilson will start Week 14 vs. Texans

Zach Wilson is back in the starting lineup. He’ll be the quarterback against the Texans in Week 14.

Zach Wilson is back in the starting lineup yet again. Head coach Robert Saleh announced Wednesday Wilson will start Sunday against the Houston Texans.

Saleh also said Wilson will be the starter the rest of the season, barring injury.

“He gives us the best chance to win,” Saleh said. “He’s fired up.”

The Jets are turning back to Wilson just three weeks after he was benched in Week 11 against the Buffalo Bills in favor of Tim Boyle, who was benched in favor of Trevor Siemian. Boyle was released Tuesday as the team signed Brett Rypien from the Seahawks’ practice squad.

Saleh said he always believed Wilson was the best quarterback but wanted to look for a spark with Boyle and Siemian, a spark that never happened.

Wilson will be the starter with Siemian as the No. 2 and Rypien as the No. 3.

Saleh also said he believes there is “no concern whatsoever” about the locker room in the wake of the recent report that Wilson was reluctant to return to the starting lineup.

Wilson now gets five more games to salvage his career and perhaps audition for the league with the opportunity looming that the Jets release him this offseason.
