Steelers sign two former XFL Guardians

The Pittsburgh Steelers add depth to their lines via the XFL

The Steelers added depth both sides of the ball Wednesday with defensive tackle Cavon Walker and offensive tackle Jarron Jones, both formerly of the XFL New York Guardians.

Walker, the XFL’s sack leader, compiled 4.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits, and 19 tackles (five for loss) in five games with the Guardians.

Prior to joining the XFL, Walker had brief stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears.

Moments later, Rich Cimini of ESPN NFL Nation reported that the Steelers signed both Walker and Jones.

Jones spent time with several NFL teams, most notably the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills.

Depth at the interior of the Steelers defensive line was thin after losing nose tackle Javon Hargrave in free agency to the Philadelphia Eagles. Pittsburgh previously added defensive lineman Chris Wormley via a trade with the Baltimore Ravens.

Dallas Renegades are fading fast, fall to New York 30-12

The Dallas Renegades dropped their second straight game, 30-12 to the New York Guardians in Week 5.

The Dallas Renegades lost 30-12 to the New York Guardians in Week 5, dropping their record under .500 at 2-3.

The team is still looking for their first win at Globe Life Park, and their first non-Landry Jones led offensive touchdown. All their points in this one came via via K Austin MacGinnis, and RB Austin Waller’s 97-yard kickoff return.

Game Recap

Back at the QB helm for Dallas was Philip Nelson, who started the team’s Week 1 loss to the St. Louis Battlehawks. He finished with just 210 yards on 28-49 passing, zero touchdowns and two interceptions. The Renegades managed an uncharacteristic 56 rushing yards, reflecting just how much Dallas struggled to move the ball. With Jones out at least another week, Bob Stoops and Nelson will have to figure something out quick with just five regular season games remaining.

The game’s first touchdown didn’t come until the Guardians’ first drive of the second half. After trading field goals, New York backup QB Marquise Williams plunged into the end zone from a yard out to the Guardians up 12-6.

Dallas had chances to respond, especially after CB Josh Hawkins interception of Luis Perez in the third quarter. Ejections were made following the play’s extracurriculars.

Instead, it was the Guardians who kept their foot on the gas. Perez unleashed the dragon, connecting with WR Colby Pearson for an 80-yard score. The two-point conversion made it 20-6 New York.

Two plays into the Renegades next drive, New York LB Ryan Mueller made the play of the game, batting a Nelson pass into the air, catching it, and housing it for six. The play best summarized how the day went for the Renegades.

Waller’s return occurred on the ensuing kick, capping off a whirlwind of scoring plays and essentially deciding the game. New York would add on another field goal to complete the beatdown.

Odds and Ends

  • Extending a warm welcome to his XFL counterparts was Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, who hooked up the Renegades with Beats by Dre headphones earlier in the week. Perhaps Prescott was feeling generous on the horizon of an incoming extension.

  • A new XFL tradition was christened during the DC Defenders-St. Louis Battlehawks game: the Beer Snake. Empty cups were stacked inside one another, stretching over 14 rows long and spanning nearly an entire section.

The Beer Snake was even XFL-approved, as Commissioner Oliver Luck contributed a cup of his own cup to the impressive feature of fan ingenuity.

  • One of the XFL’s differentiating features is its transparency, but league opened itself up to its first major officiating controversy during the closing seconds of the Houston Roughnecks-Seattle Dragons game. On the last official play of the game, Roughnecks QB PJ Walker took a knee on 4th and 23 from the Houston 26 yard line. However, two seconds remained on the clock when Walker’s knee hit the ground, which should’ve allowed the Dragons, down nine, one more opportunity to tie the game. The XFL acknowledged the gaffe, and reassigned the officiating supervisor working the game.

Houston remains unbeaten, but Dragons fans are surely rue the missed opportunity to at least send their Week 5 contest into overtime.

XFL midterm report card grades for all 8 teams

The XFL is halfway through its season and the Houston Roughnecks are way ahead of the rest of the teams.

The XFL has reached the midpoint of its season. One team stands above all: the Houston Roughnecks. How does everyone grade out?

Dallas Renegades

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

One of the disappointments. There were high hopes when Bob Stoops was named coach of the Renegades. He brought the ultimate winning pedigree from Oklahoma. Dallas has struggled on offense and it has been dampened by injuries to quarterback Landry Jones, expected to be a huge asset. At 2-3, the Renegades need to find their stride in the second half of the season or they won’t qualify for the playoffs. Grade: C-minus

Watch: Former Georgia Bulldog DT intercepts XFL pass

Former Georgia Bulldog defensive lineman Toby Johnson intercepted a pass for the New York Guardians in the XFL. New York beat Dallas 30-12.

Former Georgia Bulldog defensive lineman Toby Johnson is making plays for the New York Guardians in the XFL. In fact, Johnson intercepted a pass against the Dallas Renegades in a play that he’ll remember forever.

Johnson never recorded an interception during his two seasons in Athens. His pick helped the Guardians seal a 30-12 victory over the Renegades. Here’s Johnson’s interception:

It wasn’t the first ever interception for Johnson, who intercepted one pass during a preseason game for the Minnesota Vikings. Following his last year at the University of Georgia (2014), Johnson has bounced around the NFL and eventually ended up in the XFL after a dominant stint in the arena football league.

The XFL give players like Johnson a chance to play the game they love, while still having a chance to make an NFL roster. Will Johnson’s success attract another NFL team to sign him?

For now, Johnson will try to help the New York Guardians, who are 3-2, win an XFL championship.

Watch: Cameron Jordan works XFL sideline for New York-Dallas game

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan tried out as a sideline reporter during the XFL’s game between New York and Dallas teams.

[jwplayer t8N0wnFu-ThvAeFxT]

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan tried out for a new job this weekend, patrolling the sidelines of Saturday’s XFL game between the New York Guardians and Dallas Renegades. It’s the latest media appearance Jordan has made, following previous brushes with NFL Network’s ย โ€œGood Morning Footballโ€ program and SiriusXM’s โ€œThe Rich Eisen Show.โ€

This time, though, Jordan wasn’t the one being interviewed. It was his responsibility to hold the microphone and ask pertinent questions of players as they left the field, doing his best to make for good TV.

And Jordan was a natural in the role, later joking that, “I channeled my inner WDSU team.” He chopped it up with players from both teams after big on-field moments, showing an easy comfort in relating their experiences to the cameras.

While it appears he’ll have an easy transition from his days on the NFL field to a media role — in whatever medium it may end up landing — Jordan made it clear that he doesn’t intend to hang his cleats up any time soon.

Here are some of his highlights in those instant-reaction interviews:

Watch: New York Guardians score 2 touchdowns in 40 seconds

An 80-yard pass and a Pick-Six gave the New York Guardians a pair of TDs in less than a minute.

The New York Guardians erupted for 21 points in the third quarter Saturday at Dallas.

Luis Perez found Colby Pearson deep and the wide receiver made some sweet moves and was in the end zone 80 yards later.

Then, Philip Nelson tried a pass that was picked off by linebacker Ryan Mueller, who took it back 33 yards for a TD that eventually made it 27-6.

The Guardians couldn’t stand all the prosperity as their next kickoff was returned 97 yards for a score by the Renegades’ Austin Walter.

Watch: Renegades’ Austin Walter returns kickoff for touchdown

The Dallas Renegades’ Austin Walter returned a kickoff for a TD against the New York Guardians.

The Dallas Renegades did not have much to be glad about Saturday. They trailed the New York Guardians, 27-6, in the third quarter when Austin Walter tried to ignite Dallas.

Walter, a 5-foot-8, 197-pound running back from Rice, took a kickoff and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed and the Renegades still trailed 27-12.

The TD was the second TD in the young XFL season. Both of them have come against the Guardians, whose special teams coach has to be concerned. The first came on a reverse against the St. Louis BattleHawks.

Prediction

Guardians 19, Renegades 17

Moneyline (?)

The Guardians look like a much more complete team under QB Perez, making them a real threat to knock off the Renegades (-334) on the road. New York is 0-2 on the road and Dallas is winless in two home games, so something’s got to give. Take the GUARDIANS (+260) at plus-money to win outright.

New to sports gambling? Every $1 bet on the Guardians ML will profit $2.60 if they win.

Against the Spread (?)

Bet the GUARDIANS -8 (-110) to cover the spread, which seems too big of a line for two teams that have struggled offensively. QB Jones’ injury complicates things for the Renegades, too. Both teams are 2-2 ATS, and even though the Guardians have been terrible on the road, I’m going with them in this one.

Over/Under (?)

Back the UNDER 37.0 (-110). Both teams are 0-4 O/U this season, which is a remarkable feat. Even with the low total, it’ll go Under again with these two clubs.

Cameron Jordan to work as a sideline reporter in upcoming XFL game

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan will work the XFL’s Week 5 game between the Guardians and Renegades as a sideline reporter.

[jwplayer ggKFmbtn-ThvAeFxT]

New Orleans Saints fans will want to tune into March 7’s clash between the New York Guardians and Dallas Renegades, with All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan on hand to interview XFL players on the sidelines. The national-broadcast game on FOX will kick off at 4:00 p.m. CT from Global Life Park in Arlington, Texas. Curt Menefee and Joel Klatt will call the game from the booth.

It’s an interesting career turn from Jordan, but not unexpected. Jordan has been a common guest on radio and television programs, ranging from “The Rich Eisen Show” on Sirius XM to “Good Morning Football” on NFL Network. He was a guest of the NFL Network’s broadcast from last week’s NFL Scouting Combine, chopping it up with hosts and draft prospects during the on-field events. While Jordan is still in the prime of his career — he inked a contract extension through 2023 last summer, before posting a career-high 15.5 sacks — this experience in front of cameras, with a microphone in hand, should serve him well once it’s time to hang up his cleats.

So expect an entertaining afternoon of football with Jordan patrolling the XFL sidelines this Saturday. The startup league has had a few profane “hot mic” incidents and other too-revealing moments, and nearly got Troy Aikman trampled, but the unprecedented coverage of players’ reactions just minutes after a big play (good or bad) has made for terrific TV. We’ll be sure to grab the highlights.

Updated XFL Championship Odds: Roughnecks, Battlehawks pulling away

Assessing the 2020 XFL Championship odds through the inaugural season’s first four weeks. Can anyone catch the Houston Roughnecks?

The XFL is four weeks of games into its inaugural season and the Houston Roughnecks and St. Louis Battlehawks have emerged as heavy favorites as division leaders. We look at the 2020 XFL Championship odds with contenders pulling away entering the mid-point of the season.

2020 XFL Championship Odds

Odds via BetMGM, last updated March 4 at 1:40 p.m. ET.

TEAM PRESEASON ODDS UPDATED ODDS
Houston Roughnecks +750 +175
St. Louis Battlehawks +1000 +250
Dallas Renegades +250 +600
DC Defenders +750 +700
New York Guardians +350 +800
Los Angeles Wildcats +450 +1200
Tampa Bay Vipers +550 +2000
Seattle Dragons +1200 +3300

2020 XFL Championship Odds: Risers

Houston Roughnecks

The Roughnecks are the only remaining undefeated team through four games, winning twice at home and twice on the road. Their plus-five touchdown differential and 16 TDs scored also lead the league.

QBย Phillip Walker leads the XFL with 987 passing yards, Cam Phillips leads with 333 receiving yards andย Deatrick Nichols leads with three interceptions. Three of their four wins have come by at least 7 points.

St. Louis Battlehawks

The Battlehawks’ odds have dropped to 1/4 of what they were in the preseason. They sit atop the XFL East at 3-1 and are undefeated at home at 2-0. The defense leads the league with only seven touchdowns allowed.

QBย Jordan Ta’amu ranks second to Houston’s Walker with 876 passing yards, while RB Matt Jones is second with 244 rushing yards. Their only loss was a 28-24 setback at the Roughnecks in Week 2, and only Houston has scored more than 16 points against St. Louis.

2020 XFL Championship Odds: Fallers

Los Angeles Wildcats

The Wildcats entered the season with the third-best championship odds and are now one of the three teams buried at the bottom with odds worse than 10-1 to win the championship.

They’re 1-1 at home and 0-2 on the road, but they have a touchdown differential of plus-2, thanks to a 39-9 home rout of the Defenders in Week 3. They fell right back to Earth in Week 4, however, with a 17-14 road loss at the New York Guardians.

Tampa Bay Vipers

The Vipers entered the year with hope led by former Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman. They’ve started the season 0-2 on the road and have a minus-2 touchdown differential.

They may have started a turnaround in Week 4 with a 25-0 home win over the Defenders, a club with a pattern of helping opposing teams turn things around, apparently.

Seattle Dragons

Things have only grown worse for the Dragons, who started the year with the worst XFL Championship odds. Their touchdown differential is just minus-1 โ€“ they haven’t lost by more than 12 points.

They’re unlikely to win it at all, but they’re much closer to being in the middle of the pack and represent a reasonable long-shot value.
