LSU offers New Orleans receiver prospect in 2025 class

LSU offered TaRon Francis, getting in early with the in-state recruit.

As recruiting season remains in full swing, LSU continues to hand out offers.

The latest has gone to [autotag]TaRon Francis[/autotag], a class of 2025 wide receiver from New Orleans.

Francis attends Edna Karr High School. LSU has landed a few players from there before, including defensive lineman [autotag]Tygee Hill[/autotag] who signed with the Tigers in December.

[autotag]Racey McMath[/autotag], who was a member of LSU’s national title team in 2019 and saw NFL action last fall with the Titans, is another Edna Karr alum.

It’ll be a long time before Francis signs with a college program, but it’s always good for instate schools to get involved with recruits early. That’s where half the in-state advantage comes from. LSU should know about Louisiana prospects before anyone else does.

Getting in and offering a player early is also a way to keep high school coaches happy. Maintaining relationships with the tight-knit New Orleans high school coaches is a critical part of the LSU job.

Both running backs coach [autotag]Frank Wilson[/autotag] and wide receivers coach [autotag]Cortez Hankton[/autotag] have connections with those guys and it wouldn’t be a bad assumption to say that had something to do with this offer.

Notre Dame guard Elijah Morgan entering transfer portal

A seldom-used player is looking elsewhere.

After three years of limited playing time at Notre Dame, guard Elijah Morgan has decided to look elsewhere. Morgan, the New Orleans native who just finished his junior season, is entering the transfer portal. While he still will receive his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame, his next basketball game will be with another program:

In 27 games over three seasons with the Irish, Morgan averaged 0.8 points, 0.2 rebounds and 0.4 assists a game. While he shot only 4 of 17 from the field from that time, he made all 13 of his free-throw attempts. Six of those free throws came over four minutes in a Feb. 26 blowout win over Georgia Tech, and they accounted for both his career high and his only points of the season. None of the six games he appeared in this past season, the fewest of his career, were decided by less than 14 points.

It’s clear that Morgan didn’t see his situation with the Irish getting any better, so his best move was to move on. Here’s hoping he gets the opportunities he’s looking for at his next stop.

Report: Saints are ‘one to keep an eye on’ if Odell Beckham Jr. clears waivers

Report: Saints are ‘one to keep an eye on’ if Odell Beckham Jr. clears waivers; how WR could fit under salary cap

[mm-video type=video id=01fknysc5d6jjhb5q7m2 playlist_id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fknysc5d6jjhb5q7m2/01fknysc5d6jjhb5q7m2-a2d86502bd69b97ccabab70f2ff7906c.jpg]

It’s not a situation that the New Orleans Saints or Odell Beckham Jr. have much control over right now, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggested Sunday that both sides share interest in teaming up once Beckham becomes a free agent. Well, if he becomes a free agent.

The Cleveland Browns adjusted Beckham’s contract before releasing him this weekend, which means he will be formally waived on Monday — giving teams 24 hours to decide whether to submit a waiver claim by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline. And those adjustments to his contract make it “very unlikely” any team does choose to claim him and take on $7.25 million in salary for the rest of the season, knowing he’ll be a free agent in the spring and not factor into the compensatory draft pick formula. This is a different resolution than what we expected based off earlier reporting, but it helps raise Beckham’s chances of eventually landing in New Orleans.

That too-high salary cap hit would be very difficult for the Saints to manage, but they could work something out with Beckham if he goes unclaimed and is able to negotiate as a free agent. And that appears to be Rapoport’s expectation given what he’s hearing from around the league.

“Expect him to be a free agent. He’s going to have significant interest. One team, just one to keep an eye on, the New Orleans Saints they had interest in potentially trading for him, it didn’t happen. Obviously he went to LSU as well, I would expect him to have interest there. Just one to keep an eye on,” Rapoport said.

Beckham’s Louisiana roots extend beyond LSU. He was born in Baton Rouge and starred at Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans (the same powerhouse that sent Peyton and Eli Manning into the high-stakes SEC, and later the NFL). It makes plenty of sense that he’d welcome a return home.

But can the Saints afford him? Claiming him off of waivers outright isn’t an option, which is the case for most teams around the league (and Beckham’s agent is working to discourage even more potential suitors to try and control his client’s path forward). If Beckham goes unclaimed, the Browns will be on the hook for $4.25 million of his remaining salary in addition to whatever his new team signs him for.

And while the Saints are awful tight against the salary cap right now, and they have a couple more pennies to pinch in contract restructures with Taysom Hill, Alvin Kamara, and Ryan Ramczyk that could yield as much as $2.6 million. Combine that with the Saints’ estimated $1,098,472 in salary cap space and the deduction of another contract from their books to add Beckham and you’ve got just enough cap space to squeeze Beckham in with a $3 million cap hit, making up what he’s lost by going unclaimed on waivers.

It’s tricky. There’s a lot of moving parts and a lot outside of the Saints’ (and Beckham’s) control, but there’s an avenue forward to get both parties together. But it just looks like such an easy match with such a glaring weakness in the Saints receiving corps and Beckham’s own motivations to get here. Let’s wait and see what happens next.

Tampa Bay vs New Orleans Game Preview

Why Tampa Bay Will Win

Can the Buccaneers make the Saints press a bit?

The Saints have been at their best when they can control the tempo, run well, rely on the defense, flip the ball to Alvin Kamara – repeat.

Tampa Bay was able to roll through Chicago last week without breathing hard – the offense could afford to not be all that sharp in a 38-3 win. This week, here comes the focus, here comes the downfield passing game again, and, potentially, here comes the return of Rob Gronkowski as an extra safety valve.

As good as the Saints have been, they haven’t faced a team that can throw since the opener against Green Bay. They destroyed the Packers in that weird game, but this is obviously different.

Tom Brady and company aren’t going to struggle to get to 200 yards through the air.

Jameis Winston will have to air it out a wee bit, the offense that’s not great on third downs will have to make up for the defense that’s not great on third, either, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 8

Why New Orleans Will Win

Here comes the running game.

Tampa Bay might be No. 1 in the NFL against the run, but that’s partially because teams don’t commit to it because they’re trying to keep up. Philadelphia was able to have a little success, and Khalil Herbert ran well for the Bears right up until the offense decided to stop sticking with what worked.

Alvin Kamara is coming off a fantastic game against Seattle, and the Saints aren’t going to be afraid to try making this game physical from the start. They’re fourth in the NFL in rushing attempts, and they’re going to feed 41 over and over again, and they’re going to hope to get the pass rush going.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The New Orleans pass rush isn’t what it was last season, but it’s going to try repeating the two regular season wins of last year when it hit Brady over and over again.

Of course, though, the Buccaneers pulled through when it mattered in the playoffs.

It’s one of those statement moments for both teams, and the New Orleans defense is going to make it by shutting down Leonard Fournette and the run and getting to Brady just enough to slow things down on two late fourth quarter drives.

New Orleans vs Seattle Game Preview

Why New Orleans Will Win

The week off will work wonders.

It’s not like the team was limping in the bye – it rolled Washington in Week 5 – but getting two weeks to get ready for Geno Smith and not Russell Wilson should make this a whole lot easier.

What’s Seattle doing without Wilson? It’s pounding and trying to pound some more to take the pressure off of Smith. It almost worked in the Sunday night game against Pittsburgh in a physical overtime battle.

The Seahawks catch a break of an extra day, but the Saint defense that’s the best in the league at allowing fewest yards per carry and second overall in run defense should be that much tougher. But …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Seattle Will Win

The Seahawks have a few parts back and ready to go for the ground game. Chris Carson might still be out with a neck injury, but Rashaad Penny is back along with Alex Collins from a hamstring injury.

Geno Smith might not be Russell Wilson, but he’s had time to get settled in, it’s his gig now for the next few weeks, and outside of a few key mistakes, he wasn’t bad against Pittsburgh.

For all of the defense’s problems, it’s great on third downs, it’s going against a New Orleans offense with a mediocre passing game, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll come down to who has the better ground attack, and it’ll be New Orleans.

Alvin Kamara should go off on the league’s 30th-ranked rushing D, the Saint defense has only allowed more than 100 yards once, and it’ll be an interesting grind with the rested team overcoming the early boost from the Seahawk crowd.

Cardinals-Saints preseason game canceled in wake of Hurricane Ida

The Cardinals are now done with the preseason, even though they already had left for New Orleans.

The Arizona Cardinals were scheduled to face the New Orleans Saints on the road in their preseason finale on Saturday. Originally scheduled for 5 p.m. Arizona time, it was moved up to 10 a.m. Arizona time because of what is now Hurricane Ida, which is expected to hit the gulf coast later this weekend.

The Saints announced an update Friday afternoon.

The game has now been canceled.

This is the statement the Saints issued:

The New Orleans Saints announced Friday, Aug. 27 that due to the impending impact of Hurricane Ida on the Gulf Coast region that the team’s preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals has been canceled. The game, which was originally scheduled for 7 pm on Saturday, Aug 28 was moved to noon at the Caesars Superdome. Due to the intensification of the hurricane throughout the day and after the most recent tropical update, the team’s leadership has made the decision in the best interests of all personnel that may have been directly and indirectly affected by the storm. This announcement comes after constant communications with City of New Orleans officials, the National Weather Service, Homeland Security, Governor Edwards and leading state officials and the National Football League. The team encourages all residents of the region to take precautionary measures to remain safe throughout the impending hurricane. The Saints will be in communication with season ticket account holders regarding applicable refunds and/or credits to their season ticket accounts.

It appears that the Cardinals had already departed for New Orleans before the decision was made.

While the preseason game is important for a number of reasons, with the safety of fans, the teams and more, it wasn’t worth the risk.

We wish all those in and around New Orleans well and hope people stay safe.

New Orleans has not been good to the Tigers and it hasn’t been good to the Jacksonville Jaguar’s first round pick Travis Etienne.

The Jaguars are playing the Saints on Monday night and it was an early exit for Etienne.  In the second quarter Etienne went out with a foot injury.

Etienne had one rush for one yard and one reception for three yards before his exit.
