The uncertainty surrounding Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones’ availability for this season dominated the offseason. Jones would go on to hold out, missing every team activity before returning and playing a significant role in the team’s first regular season victory in Jacksonville.

On the latest episode of New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce (Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment), The Kelce brothers spent the entire episode catching up with Jones about his career so far in the NFL and responding to Travis’ request to return to the Chiefs during an earlier episode.

“I watched the show when you were talking about it, and I was like, ‘I miss my dog! I miss my dog.’ It wasn’t the same, bro.” Jones explained. “I’m like, I gotta get back. Watching them play, bro. I’m like – I’m going back next week, man. Let’s work something out; let’s do it.”

Jones returned to the team after agreeing to a new one-year deal for this season ahead of Week 2. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle followed up with his feelings about missing training camp and his whereabouts.

“Listen, bro – training camp? Staying in St. Joseph, Missouri? In a dorm? It’s the best thing I could have missed,” Jones said. “I was in Miami, soaking up the sun. I was tanning on the beach (for) a couple(of) days, bro. I think it’s the best thing for me to miss training camp.”

Jones worked out near his home in Miami during the holdout to remain in shape and handle the harsh Florida elements that awaited the team in their Week 2 victory over the Jaguars.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce applauds Colorado HC Deion Sanders’ unapologetic attitude

The Saturday college football landscape hasn’t been the same since Deion Sanders, better known as ‘Coach Prime,’ became head coach at the University of Colorado. The instant notability and success matched with Sanders’ larger-than-life personality have captured the country’s attention as 9.3 million viewers tuned in to watch Colorado defeat their rivals Colorado State in double overtime last week.

On the latest episode of New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce (Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment), the Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro shared his enthusiasm and support of Sanders’ coaching and changing the college football culture.

Said Kelce:

“That game was awesome to watch, man, the drama or the hype going into it with the Colorado State coach saying what he said about Deion not being raised right or whatever with the sunglasses and hat. I thought it was awesome. Yeah, every bit of it was so much fun to watch. Both Deion Sanders’ sons are absolutely electric; one of his sons had a pick-six. The other one had, you know, just an outstanding game. I think, one of the Heisman finalists so far this year. And he’s completely taken over the world of college football. There’s not a single second on any of the sports networks that you know, if you’re talking about college football, you’re not talking about Deion Sanders. There’s not a single segment that goes by without talking about (it), and I think it’s awesome for the game. I think it’s awesome. But for the way that he is approaching it, the way he presents himself, the way he presents his team. A lot of people, you know, like to throw around the word arrogant, and now he’s just a fearless leader, man. And I love every bit of it, man.”

Sanders’ coaching style of allowing players to be their authentic selves, similar to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, is another intriguing factor that has caught Kelce’s eye.

“I would assume that every college kid and every high school kid wants to go to Colorado and play for Deion Sanders.” Kelce said, “I know, if I had a second to go back and play another couple of years, I’d do it.”

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce encourages NFL rookies to find a role

On the latest episode of New Heights, #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce provided some valuable advice to incoming NFL rookies. | from @EdEastonJr

The 2023 offseason of Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce is already one for the record books, and the summer hasn’t even started. His many endeavors have continued to elevate his status outside of football while maintaining his supremacy and prestige amongst the younger players joining the league.

The NFL draft has come and gone with the league welcoming a new class of players. The Kelce brothers have earned many accolades in their historic careers but know that some of their lessons learned can be passed down to the next generation. On the latest episode of New Heights with Jason and Travis, the Chiefs All-Pro offered helpful advice to the incoming rookie class.

“Rookie advice, man,” Kelce began. “The biggest thing that I see year in and year out is, everybody wants to be that star player. The guy that comes in and just kind of like, immediately gets all the plays called for him all the opportunities to be great. And that’s not necessarily how it works in the league. I mean, if you’re a first-round draft pick, that’s one thing, but for the most part, guys are gonna have to come in and find a role. I was the same way I was the number two tight end for like my two, my first two, three years. And I had to come in and help out the team wherever I possibly could. So special teams, I was in every special team meeting, you know, I was going to every single meeting, or I was going to the tight end room. Afterward, I’m going up to the quarterbacks just trying to get a better understanding of, you know, timing and things like that.”

Kelce’s rookie season was immediately cut short after being drafted in 2013, playing only one snap before suffering a knee injury and having surgery. He understood the road to where he is now wouldn’t be easy, so he made the most of his opportunities.

“I’m listening, soaking every bit of knowledge that I possibly can just to try and find a role on the team, and everybody is going to have to do that,” said Kelce. “So rookies, man. Come in there with big dreams, big hopes that you know, I mean, you’re gonna be that household name. But at the same time, the task at hand is that you got to help this team right now when and sometimes that means you just got to find a role on the offense or defense or wherever you’re playing.”

Kelce has rarely missed a game during his NFL career while maintaining elite production on the field. Plenty of talented prospects were drafted last week in Kansas City, but it will be the maturity, patience, and determination that will make or break the next star.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce reflects on ‘chaotic’ rookie minicamp experience

With rookie minicamps coming up soon across the NFL, #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce reflected on his experience at rookie minicamp back in 2013. | from @EdEastonJr

After hosting thousands of spectators last weekend, the NFL draft is in the rearview for the Kansas City Chiefs. The next crop of rookies will have their chance to wear a Chiefs uniform soon when they get ready for the rookie minicamp, as many greats have done before them.

The importance of maturity and being a team player as a rookie are vital to success, and it starts well before the veterans are at training camp. Over the years, Chiefs All-Pro Travis Kelce’s growth has taken him to the top of the league as a champion and garnered individual accolades. On the latest episode of New Heights, the Chiefs’ tight end reflected his experience at rookie minicamp ten years ago.

“It’s the most chaotic,” said Kelce. “They put in probably close to 160 plays, I would assume somewhere around that to like 200. And you have to (learn) by the end of the weekend, you’re fried mentally and physically, you have full-on practices, not padded practices, but everybody’s out there and a helmet flying around. Nobody knows what they’re doing. I mean, the quarterbacks could barely spit out the play call. Because they’re so new, they just got taught what they’re doing the day before, right? So it’s just it’s absolute chaos. And I love watching guys just do absolutely whatever they think is the best thing possible on film. And it’s entertaining. I think it’s entertaining because it’s nothing like a structured practice usually is in the NFL. Yeah, I was a part of that chaos.”

Kelce was drafted out of Cincinnati in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft. He had plenty of question marks following a college career that included a season-long suspension. He worked through the adversity and injuries to become a core member of the Chiefs’ offense.

“I remember jumping into Kansas City as a rookie. The first weekend you get put in like a townhouse or a hotel for the weekend,” said Kelce. “I was walking around going to barbecue joints and just enjoying the area around the hotel as much as possible because I don’t like sitting in the house, and man, it was quite the experience got to get some good old Kansas City Barbecue introduced to Oklahoma Joe’s at the time which is now Kansas City Joe’s and I gained some weight pretty quickly. So, enjoy the Kansas City Barbecue maybe have some greens while you’re enjoying it as well. Yeah, just get ready for Chiefs Kingdom to show you some love, man, because the city is too electric right now.”

The Chiefs rookies heading into the 2023 season will have their own stories to tell soon, but hearing the humble beginnings of a star in the league is a welcomed preview. The opportunity to get a head start on enjoying the Kansas City community is a needed process for every young player.

The New Heights podcast starring Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and his brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, has gained quite a following since its launch last year and is adored by fans who love getting the inside scoop on the duo’s thoughts.

On the show’s latest episode, which focused mainly on the NFL draft, the pair announced their guest for next week’s iteration of the podcast. After much fanfare near the end of the program, Travis and Jason revealed that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid would join them for a recording of what is sure to be one of the defining episodes in the young show’s catalog.

“While we were in Kansas City we finally got him,” Jason exclaimed. “The guy that I think Travis and I have been looking [forward to] getting on this podcast the most, we got Andy Reid. Big Red. The Walrus himself is in the building, and that episode is going to be dropping next week.”

Travis interjected with his own excitement after Jason’s initial announcement.

“I blacked out,” Travis said. “I’m going to be excited to watch this, I blacked out. I don’t even remember what we asked him.”

Fans will have to wait for the premier of this defining episode to get Reid’s take on the Chiefs’ offseason and the newfound fame of his top tight end on the New Heights podcast. If past shows are any indication, the Kelce brothers will coax out a new side of Reid that most listeners haven’t seen or heard in the veteran head coach. Their irreverent questions should provide plenty of laughs to all who watch the next chapter of the series.
