Jaguars inactives for Week 17 game vs. Patriots

The Jags have named their four inactive players for Week 17’s game in New England, two of which were the only players on the final injury report Friday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced their list of inactive players for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots and it included four players. Those players were cornerback Nevin Lawson, running back Mekhi Sargent, linebacker Dakota Allen, and tight end James O’Shaughnessy.

Allen (shoulder) and O’Shaughnessy (hip) were on Friday’s final injury report. The former was ruled questionable after being limited all week, while the latter was rule OUT after not practicing at all.

Both players sustained their respective injuries in Week 16’s game against the Jets. Allen’s injury was one that ruled him questionable to return, while O’Shaughnessy was hurt on the Jags’ last offensive drive of the game after hauling in a catch that was converted for a first-down. O’Shaughnessy was visibly in pain afterward and the team had to use a time out as a result.

The Jags just signed Sargent on Dec. 27, so there wasn’t a strong chance for him to play. However, the choice to sit Lawson is interesting as he’s one of the Jags most experienced cornerbacks with Shaquill Griffin on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

As for the Patriots’ list of inactive, they are as follows:

Full Jags vs. Titans final injury report for Week 14

The Jags had one player ruled out in Brandon Linder. Meanwhile, five were ruled out for Tennessee, including cornerback Jackrabbit Jenkins.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their final injury report for Week 14, and as previously reported, center Brandon Linder (back) was the lone player ruled out. As a result, Tyler Shatley will be getting his fifth start of the season.

Linder’s absence comes after the veteran exited Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams before half-time. He was ruled questionable to return, but wasn’t reinserted back into the game.

Every other player that was on the injury report was a full participant. That means guard Ben Bartch (back), pass-rusher Josh Allen (shoulder), cornerback Tyson Campbell (groin), all of whom were limited Thursday, were upgraded Friday. The same also applies for defensive lineman Malcom Brown (toe), linebacker Myles Jack (knee), running back James Robinson (heel/knee), all of whom missed practice Thursday.

The Tennessee Titans ruled five players out on their end. Among those players were cornerback Jackrabbit Jenkins and new linebacker addition Zach Cunningham. To view their whole injury report, the Titans Wire has more here.

Jags Week 14 injury report: Josh Allen upgraded to limited participation Thursday

The Jags’ top pass-rusher, Josh Allen, was upgraded to limited participation on Thursday, but starters Brandon Linder and Malcom Brown missed their second consecutive practices of the week.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a few injured players who received an upgrade in status Thursday. Those players were defensive end and outside linebacker Josh Allen and cornerback Nevin Lawson, both of whom were upgraded to full and limited, respectively.

Linebacker Lerentee McCray was upgraded to full from and illness, while guard Andrew Norwell and receiver Marvin Jones Jr. were full participants after having Wednesday off to rest.

The last change to the injury report occurred to running back James Robinson (heel/knee), who was downgraded (was previously limited on Wednesday) and didn’t participate in practice Thursday. However, according to the Associated Press’ Mark Long, having Thursdays off will be routine for Robinson and linebacker Myles Jack (knee), who has been on the injury report multiple weeks with his injury.

Alongside Jack and Robinson, the other two notables who didn’t practice were starting center Brandon Linder (back), who is day-to-day, and starting defensive lineman Malcom Brown (toe). Both will be important names to watch Friday on the final injury report as they are two of the Jags’ most experienced players.

Tua Tagovailoa throws awful interception to keep Jaguars ahead of Dolphins

Interceptions like the one Tua Tagovailoa threw to Jacksonville’s Nevin Lawson are why some are concerned about Tagovailoa’s development.

You know how when you were a kid, and you did something really, really wrong, and your parent or parents responded by giving you the full name treatment? Well, after this interception thrown by the Dolphins’ quarterback to Jaguars cornerback Nevin Lawson with 1:18 left in the first quarter, one can imagine head coach Brian Flores amplifying his message with a full-on “Tuanigamanuolepola Tagovailoa!”

And justifiably so, if so.

The Dolphins had just gotten the ball from the Jaguars as defensive tackle Christian Wilkins strip-sacked Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and Tua responded by giving the ball right back. It was Jacksonville’s second turnover of the season — the worst turnover creation rate in the NFL — and it was Lawson’s first career interception. Lawson has been in the NFL since 2014.

Tagovailoa was looking to his left, and one has to assume there was some sort of route miscommunication here, because there’s nobody with a Dolphins uniform anywhere near Lawson, and where the throw goes. Tagovailoa pumps, waits, waits, waits… and makes a very bad decision.

Turns out, Tagovailoa had receiver Jaylen Waddle wide open up the left side boundary, and safety Andrew Wingard had rolled deep. Tagovailoa must have been expecting Waddle to cut his route shorter, but the NFL’s better quarterbacks are able to adjust to stuff like this.

To his credit, Tagovailoa responded well on the Dolphins’ next drive, throwing a two-yard touchdown pass at the end of a seven-play, 91-yard drive to Waddle to put Miami back up, 20-17.

Jaguars inactives for Week 4 Thursday Night Football game vs. Bengals

The Jags have named their six inactives for Thursday Night Football and RB Carlos Hyde is among them.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have announced their inactives for their Thursday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals and it does have some surprises on it. Among the six inactive players are running back Carlos Hyde and cornerback Nevin Lawson.

Tonight’s game will mark Hyde’s first one being inactive as the Jags have used him as their No. 2 running back. So far he’s seen 62 offensive snaps and has been able to accumulate 95 yards on 19 carries.

Without Hyde, it could mean the Jags could be ready to give James Robinson the workload fans have been asking for after he only saw 16 carries in the first two weeks of the regular season. The second-year running back saw his biggest workload Sunday against Arizona, where he got 15 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown.

As for Lawson, his absence will give the Jags four cornerbacks heading into the game. That especially could be a puzzling decision with Tre Herndon returning for his first game since spraining his MCL in the preseason, but he has been a full participant all week.

With Lawson out, the Jags will have Shaquill Griffin, Tyson Campbell, and Chris Claybrooks available with Herndon at cornerback.

As for the Bengals’ inactives, they are as follows:

There aren’t really any surprises on their end. Starters Jessie Bates and Tee Higgins were ruled out on the final injury report, while Xavier Su’a-Filo and Chidobe Awuzie were ruled doubtful.

Report: Jags to sign former Raiders CB Nevin Lawson

After visiting the team recently, former Raiders CB Nevin Lawson will be signing with the Jags.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be bringing in some help for their secondary this week as they have some injury concerns there, specifically at cornerback.  According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is signing former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nevin Lawson, who was just cut on Monday.

Lawson, 30, visited the Jags recently, so this was a move many saw coming. This season will mark his eighth as he was drafted in 2014 by the Detroit Lions with the 133rd overall selection.

Lawson will bring plenty of experience to the secondary with 68 starts to his name, and throughout his tenure in the NFL, he’s registered 290 total tackles (239 solo) and 34 pass breakups but has yet to register an interception. As for his grades on Pro Football Focus, he registered a coverage grade of 54.7 last season and had a 55.6 overall grade.

Lawson wasn’t able to take the field this regular season with the Raiders as he  had to serve a two-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. That said, it appears he’s now cleared of that and will look to latch on with a struggling Jags group that might be without CJ Henderson and Tre Herndon, who are dealing with groin and knee injuries, respectively.

Report: Former Raiders CB Nevin Lawson visiting the Jags

The Jags are dealing with two injuries at cornerback and it appears they’ve turned to the free-agent market to look at a veteran with nearly 70 starts.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without two of their cornerbacks on the active roster as Tre Herndon (knee) has missed their first two regular season games and CJ Henderson exited Sunday’s game with a hip flexor injury and is also dealing with a groin injury, according to Urban Meyer.

As a result, the team set up a visit from former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nevin Lawson, who was just released Monday.

Lawson, 30, has yet to take the field for a regular season game in 2021 as he had to serve a suspension (two games) for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, which means he will be available for Week 3 if signed. Before this season, he had been with the Raiders since 2019, but was selected in the 2014 draft (pick No. 133) by the Detroit Lions.

Lawson entered this season with plenty of experience and has 68 starts to his name. 14 of those came with the Raiders, while the rest (54) came with the Lions. Throughout his time in the league, he’s also been able to garner 290 total tackles (239 solo), 34 pass breakups, but has yet to register an interception.

If signed, the Jags would at least have Lawson, Shaq Griffin, Tyson Campbell, and Chris Claybrooks heading into Week 3’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. However, if they choose not to sign Lawson or another veteran free agent, they could snag a player from their practice squad as cornerbacks Brandon Rusnak and Lorenzo Burns are both available.

Raiders DC Gus Bradley on who has ‘jumped out’ at nickel cornerback

Raiders DC Gus Bradley on who has ‘jumped out’ at nickel cornerback

As we work our way through the offseason, the roles begin to become clearer. One position that has come into question this offseason has been who will step in at nickel corner to replace the departed Lamarcus Joyner.

New defensive coordinator Gus Bradley offered some clarity on the[lawrence-newsletter] competition at the position.

“Right now there’s a lot that we put on that plate. At the nickel spot there’s a lot of guys that we rotate in there,” Bradley said. “Guys like [Nevin] Lawson has really jumped out. I think he’s a guy that has picked up really well on it. Amik [Robertson] has been playing in there. He’s done a nice job on the inside. The guy that’s probably really jumped out is [Nate] Hobbs; the kid from Illinois. I’ve been very impressed with him. He has a real good knowledge of the position. He has a learning curve and he’s really jumped out.”

Lawson is the veteran of the group. He is entering his third season with the team, having played mostly as an outside corner in dime packages. He may be lining up with the first team at the moment, but come the start of the regular season, someone else will have to step up because Lawson is suspended for the first two games for a PED violation.

Robertson was a fourth-round pick by the Raiders last year. They tried to transition him from outside to inside, but that transition has taken a bit longer than they’d hoped, so he’s getting another crack at it this year.

Hobbs was selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft. His best shot at getting on the field early is at the nickel spot and it sounds like he’s further along than Robertson was for training camp last year.

Ex-Lions CB Nevin Lawson suspended for 2 games for performance-enhancing drugs

Third year in a row Lawson is suspended for at least Week 1

Former Detroit Lions cornerback Nevin Lawson is facing a two-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Lawson’s suspension appeared on the NFL’s transaction sheet on Friday. He does have the ability to appeal the suspension.

Lawson signed with the Las Vegas Raiders prior to the 2019 season after spending his first five years with the Lions. He was a regular starter in Detroit and notable for his strong tackling, as well as his inability to create plays on the ball. Lawson started 14 games over the last two years for the Raiders, logging 85 total tackles and forcing two fumbles.

Starting the season on suspension is nothing new for Lawson. He missed the first four games in the 2019 season for the same violation and was suspended for the 2020 opener for swinging his helmet at a player in 2019.

NFL fines Broncos cornerback Isaac Yiadom, 3 Raiders players

Broncos cornerback Isaac Yiadom was fined by the NFL after being penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct against the Raiders in Week 17.

Near the end of the Broncos’ 16-15 win over the Raiders in Week 17, a brawl broke out between the AFC West rivals. The league punished four players involved in the incident last week.

Denver cornerback Isaac Yiadom received a $14,037 unsportsmanlike conduct fine, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. That’s 2.324% of the $603,750 he earned during the 2019 season (salary via Spotrac.com).

In addition to Yiadom, three other players faced repercussions.

Raiders guard Josh Mauro and safety Erik Harris were fined $10,527 and $28,075, respectively, for unnecessary roughness. Oakland cornerback Nevin Lawson received the biggest punishment: a one-game suspension without pay to begin the 2020 season.

Lawson was suspended after using his helmet as a weapon in the brawl.

Yiadom (6-1, 190 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Boston College. He hasn’t quite lived up to his draft status over the last two years, totaling just one interception and seven pass breakups in 29 games.
