LSU men’s basketball sees a massive rise in NET Rankings after upsetting Texas A&M

The Tigers climbed all the way into the top 100 of the NET after the win.

It wasn’t the best start to the season for LSU’s men’s basketball, but coach Matt McMahon’s team began SEC play with a bang.

The Tigers upset Texas A&M 68-53 on Saturday night in College Station to notch their second Quadrant 1 win of the season. While that win alone isn’t going to put LSU in the NCAA Tournament, it could ultimately go a long way.

McMahon’s team moved up 35 spots, climbing into the top 100 at No. 96. LSU now sits at 11th in the SEC in NET, ranking above Arkansas, Missouri and Vanderbilt.

The addition of [autotag]Jalen Cook[/autotag], who was cleared to play last month as a two-time transfer, has made a significant difference as this team enters the most important stretch of the year.

Next up will be another winnable game as the Tigers return home to face a Vanderbilt team that is 5-9 and lost to Alabama in its SEC opener.

Florida inches up NET rankings despite narrow loss to Kentucky

The Gators saw a one-spot improvement in the NET rankings after Saturday afternoon’s loss.

Florida basketball opened up its Southeastern Conference schedule on Saturday with a two-point loss at home to the sixth-ranked Kentucky Wildcats, 87-85, in a game that the Gators had every chance to win.

Unfortunately, Todd Golden’s gang went cold from the free-throw line and beyond the arc, giving John Calipari’s team the breaks it needed to emerge victoriously. It is hard to feel good about a loss when the squad had an eight-point lead heading into the half, but there were a couple of bright spots too.

One silver lining comes from the NET rankings on Sunday after the Quadrant 1 defeat, which bumped Florida up one spot to No. 48. As for Kentucky, it saw a six-point improvement with the win, moving up to No. 17.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Florida is 0-3 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 1-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents.

The Gators will travel for its first road game of the 2024 portion of the schedule with a matchup against the Ole Miss Rebels on Wednesday, Jan. 10, in Oxford, Mississippi. Tipoff is slated for a late 9 p.m. ET start and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

UNC basketball on edge of Top 10 in latest NET rankings

The UNC men’s basketball team sits at 10-3, with a couple impressive wins under its belt. Those victories are paying off in the rankings.

The UNC men’s basketball team’s victory over then-undefeated Oklahoma proved what Tar Heel Nation already knew – UNC is a great team this year.

There were some questions in the offseason, most notably whether the Armando Bacot-R.J. Davis duo could lead Carolina back to the NCAA Tournament. How much would UNC head coach Hubert Davis utilize his bench? Will the transfers fit in?

The answers – it’s looking good right now, a lot more and without a doubt.

Carolina sits at 10-3 right now with an ACC win already under its belt – Tuesday night’s convincing, 70-57 road victory over Pitt. The Tar Heels have a tough game next, as they travel to a ranked Clemson squad on Saturday, Jan. 6 for a 12 p.m. ET tip-off.

Because of what it’s done already, UNC jumped up to 12th  in the latest NET rankings. Following the win over Pitt, UNC moved up seven spots. They then moved up one more spot on Thursday with the update.

The Tar Heels are 3-3 in Quad 1 games, which are major factors for bubble teams come NCAA Tournament time. This mark means UNC has a few impressive wins under its belt (Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas), but has also lost games that aren’t surprising (Kentucky, UConn, Villanova).

Clemson (10) and N.C. State (71), Carolina’s next two opponents, prove two golden opportunities to boost its resumé for the Big Dance.

Gators take slight dip in NET rankings leading up to Kentucky game

Florida has a chance to make a big move up the NET rankings with Saturday’s game against Kentucky, but the Gators have dropped two spots in the midweek update.

Florida basketball’s first game of the new year is a massive matchup at home against the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, but several other teams have already taken the court in 2024.

The NCAA NET rankings are updated daily and the Gators have taken a two-spot tumble since the calendar turned over. Florida checks in at No. 48 on Wednesday, but things could change again by Saturday.

Regardless of what happens over the next few days, Florida controls its immediate fate with Kentucky coming into town. Beating a Quadrant 1 opponent is the best thing a college basketball team can do for its Tournament resume, and upsetting the No. 22 team on the list could warrant a double-digit jump.

Florida will have a few opportunities against Q1 opponents this year, but starting SEC play with a big win sets the tone.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Florida is 1-2 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 2-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 1-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents.

Tipoff on Saturday is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET.

Updated Big Ten NET rankings entering 2024

Updated Big Ten NET rankings as Big Ten play resumes in 2024

Penn State football ended its season with a loss to Ole Miss on Saturday, and only the national championship game next Monday left in the 2023 season. It is a great time to take a look at the updated NET rankings for the Big Ten heading into the New Year and as the college basketball season ramps up.

The conference has had a solid start to the season, which includes 3 teams in this week’s USA TODAY Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll. Illinois (8th) and Wisconsin (21st) join No. 1 Purdue in this week’s edition. Michigan State, Ohio State, and Nebraska also received votes.

NET rankings mean more when Selection Sunday gets closer as it is the leading determining factor in determining Quad 1, 2, 3, or 4 wins and losses.

Without further ado, let’s dive into this week’s edition of the rankings and where all the Big Ten teams stand.

Rankings through games played on January 1.

Florida basketball wraps up 2023 ranked inside top 50 of NET rankings

Florida is sitting inside the top 50 on the college basketball NET rankings after finishing off winning its sixth-straight game.

Another blowout win for Florida over a Quadrant 4 opponent has the Florida Gators men’s basketball team back up to No. 46 in the final NCAA NET rankings update of 2023.

Of course, the road only gets tougher from here for the Gators with conference play starting. A 10-3 record against non-conference foes has kept Florida nationally relevant, but no one is projecting more than a first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament if Florida can’t secure a big win over the next couple of months.

Fortunately, the SEC is filled with competitive programs and could field as many as nine Tournament teams this season. Florida will have its chance to prove its better than the 46th-best program in the nation.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Florida is now 1-2 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 2-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 1-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents.

Next up for Florida is No. 23 Kentucky on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET. Beating a Q1 opponent would be the best way for the Gators to kick off SEC play, but a close loss will still help the resume.

Gators stand pat in midweek men’s basketball NET rankings update

Take a look at the latest NET rankings for Florida following the Christmas holiday.

Florida basketball is off for Christmas week but the games still go on despite a truncated holiday schedule. The Gators got a boost from their 39-point win over Grambling State Tigers inside the O’Connell Center on Friday ahead of their eight-day layoff, moving up to No. 46 in the NET rankings.

Five days later, Todd Golden and Co. find themselves in the same spot despite some changes to the teams around them. Directly ahead of them at No. 45 are the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who also remain in place, while the TCU Horned Toads moved up to occupy the No. 47 spot.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Florida is currently 1-2 against Quad 1 opponents, 2-1 against Quad 2, 1-0 against Quad 3 and 5-0 against Quad 4.

Next up for Florida are the No. 185 Quinnipiac Bobcats, who travel to Gainesville on Saturday, Dec. 30, for Florida’s final non-conference game before the SEC slate. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and the game can be watched on ESPNU.

Florida jumps in NET rankings after big win over Grambling State

Florida’s near 40-point win over Grambling State on Friday night led to a six-spot jump in the college basketball NET rankings on Saturday.

Following a dominant win over the Grambling State Tigers, the Florida Gators jumped up six spots in the college basketball NET rankings to No. 46 overall in the country.

The NET rankings are used by the NCAA selection committee to pick which teams receive an at-large come Tournament time, and Quadrant 3 and 4 losses can be a résumé killer. Fortunately, Florida took care of business against No. 351 Grambling State and won by 39 points.

A top-50 team beating a Quadrant 4 team at home doesn’t usually move the needle, but a 40-point win apparently does. The Tigers dropped four spots after falling to 0-10 on the year, but six of those are against Q1 and Q2 opponents.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Florida is now 1-2 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 2-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 1-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 5-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents.

Next up for Florida is No. 188 Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 30. Closing out the conference without making any major mistakes would be a  big win for Florida and its NCAA Tournament hopes.

Florida moves up one spot in NET rankings after beating Michigan

Florida’s double-overtime win over Michigan on Tuesday bumped the Gators up a spot in the latest NET rankings update.

After beating the Michigan Wolverines, 106-101, in double overtime at the Jumpan Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday, the Florida Gators are up one spot to No. 54 overall on the NCAA NET rankings.

It was Florida’s second win over a Quadrant 2 and wraps up a three-game stretch of neutral-site games. Each of those three games produced varied results, including a narrow win over No. 214 East Carolina.

Florida is now 1-2 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 2-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 1-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 4-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents.

As a reminder, the NET rankings are a fully objective measurement of outcomes. It not only considers coarse details like win-loss, but also takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Next up for Florida is No. 346 Grambling State on Friday at 4 p.m. ET and wraps up the non-conference slate with No. 215 Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 30. The Gators will be favored in both games after starting the season undefeated against Quadrant 4 opponents.

Texas A&M Basketball has moved up seven spots in the NET Rankings after losing to No. 4 Houston

Even after losing to No. 4 Houston, Texas A&M Basketball has surprisingly risen a whopping seven spots in the newest NET Rankings.

Texas A&M Basketball (7-4) has dealt with plenty of early-season adversity due to the prolonged absences concerning senior guard Tyrece Radford and senior forward Julius Marble, who has yet to play a game this season while dealing with a cryptic “University process.”

While the Aggies have lost four games, including two straight, it’s been one of the most demanding non-conference schedules in the country, coming off their nail-biting 70-66 loss to No. 4 Houston on Saturday afternoon.

However, junior guard Wade Taylor IV, who completely lived up to his Preseason SEC Player of the Year billing, scored 26 points in the second half, including six three-pointers to tie the game at 63 after trailing by 15 at halftime.

Due to the incredible effort, especially with Tyrece Radford sidelined due to a continued breathing issue, benefitted from the close loss, rising seven spots from No. 23 to No. 16 in the newest Net Rankings on Sunday. For a brief reminder, Texas A&M has lost to No. 15 Florida Atlantic, No.22 Virginia on the road, an 8-2 Memphis team that just defeated No. 13 Clemson, and, of course, the Houston Cougars, all Quad 1 matchups.

With three Quad 1 wins over Ohio State, SMU, and Iowa State, A&M has the most Quad 1 victories in the SEC and the third most in the country behind Houston (4) and Purdue (5). So, for those of you who were in a state of panic after Sunday’s loss, the Aggies are sitting in a great position ahead of SEC play and are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
