Another Husker football player enters the 2024 season on an award watchlist. Nebraska defensive back Isaac Gifford was named to the 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List on Thursday.

Named for Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 National Championship-winning quarterback of the University of Florida Gators, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field.

Gifford actively contributes to the Huskers’ Life Skills program, volunteering extensively at the Lincoln Food Bank, speaking at schools, and helping with hospital visits.

In the spring of 2024, Gifford received the Sam Foltz 27 Hero Leadership Award and was named to the Tom Osborne and Brook Berringer Citizenship Teams for his community work.

On the field, Gifford led Nebraska with 86 tackles, including 6.5 tackles for loss, and was second on the team in pass breakups with eight. Gifford is one of 11 semifinalists for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy and will be honored as part of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

The 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy finalists and recipients will be selected on ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Presentation Gala will take place in February at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

A closer look at Nebraska’s comeback victory against No. 6 Wisconsin

The Nebraska men’s basketball team had one of their biggest wins of the year on Thursday night.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team had one of their biggest wins of the year on Thursday night. The Cornhuskers overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat No. 6 Wisconsin, 80-72, in overtime.

C.J. Wilcher led the way for Nebraska with a career-high 22 points. The Huskers fell behind 19 before clawing back to force overtime. Head basketball coach Fred Hoiberg told the press after the game that he was proud of the way his team responded after falling behind.

“We jumped them at halftime. That’s about as animated as I’ve been at halftime, and to their credit, they came out and responded, and that’s what it’s all about. You’ve got to find a way to bounce back when things aren’t going your way.”

The head coach also said the home crowd is the best he’s seen since becoming the head coach at Nebraska.

“Best environment I’ve seen since I’ve been here, for sure. They absolutely were a huge part in that win. I think when C.J. cut it to seven, when we finally got it under ten, the roof blew off the place. Then we just kept chipping away and finally get the lead there late in the game. And our fans were phenomenal.”

With the win, Nebraska now improves to 16-6 overall and 6-5 in the Big Ten. The Huskers will take the floor next on Sunday, February 4, against No. 14 Illinois in Champaign.
