Nebraska quarterback talks evolution of Husker offense

Nebraska’s starting quarterback met with the media on Tuesday afternoon.

Nebraska’s starting quarterback met with the media on Tuesday afternoon. Heinrich Haarberg was asked about the current evolution of the Husker’s offense between the start of the year and now.

The Husker’s signal caller told the assembled press that things are constantly evolving, and recent injuries haven’t helped.

“I think we saw from spring into the fall that this offense is constantly evolving, just because we have so many dynamic players. We have had a couple injuries, guys that need, as we said, need to come along a little bit. So, when guys like Marcus (Washington) go down, that kind of takes away some of the experience on the outside, so you have to change a little bit. But I don’t think we’re going to shift entirely as an offense. It’s just shifting the load a little bit.”

Jeff Sims had started this season under center, but injuries and a problem with turnovers led to sophomore Heinrich Haarberg taking over as the QB. Rhule says that Haarberg will remain the starter for the foreseeable future.

“But to me, Heinrich’s played well, Heinrich’s done some good things, so he’ll be the starter.”

Haarberg has thrown for 631 yards for the season with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s also run for 353 and three touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards per rush.

The senior scored two goals in the win, pushing her season and nation-leading total to 21. Dale is just the fifth Husker in school history to score 20-plus goals in a season and the first Husker to reach this achievement since 2009.

After starting 6-1-1, the Nebraska soccer team finally entered the conference portion of the season. The Huskers started things off with a showdown at home against Wisconsin on Friday night. After a low-scoring match, by Nebraska standards, the Huskers ended the night with a tie, drawing to the Badgers 1-1.

Eleanor Dale again gave Nebraska a goal in the draw, scoring nation-leading number 13 just 13 minutes into the match. Dale earned her goal off an assist from junior defender Jordan Zade. However, the Huskers’ high-powered offense was tamed throughout the night, only having eight shots. This allowed Wisconsin to try and force a tie and even take the lead.

But despite the Badgers’ outshooting Nebraska, finishing with 11 shots, their equalizer didn’t occur until the 88th minute, allowing both teams to walk away with the draw.

Nebraska also saw a few historical moments in the match. It welcomed back the 2013 Big Ten Champions and even had the second-highest attendance in Barbara Hibner Stadium history, with 1,771 fans attending the match.

The Huskers are now 6-1-2 on the season and will have nearly a week of preparation for their next match. They will travel east to take on Ohio State on Thursday night. The match is set for 6 p.m. and can be viewed on the Big Ten Network.

It’s been nearly two decades since the Nebraska soccer team clashed with the Creighton Bluejays on the field. The previous outing resulted in a 1-0 win for the Huskers at home. This time around, the team’s trip to Omaha resulted in a 2-2 tie to open up the 2023 season.

The match began with Eleanor Dale scoring at the 8-minute mark, nailing a sliding shot from Florence Belzile and Abbey Schwarz

Creighton’s Maddie Radke almost tied the game at the 20-minute mark but was waved off due to an offsides penalty. However, she didn’t waste time coming out of halftime to score, putting the ball in the back of the net at the 47-minute mark.

Sarah Weber responded 10 minutes later, taking a pass from Jordan Zade and giving Nebraska a 2-1 lead.

But then at the 82-minute mark, the Bluejays once again tied the game, coming off the foot of Hannah Luke.

Nebraska had an opportunity heading into the 89-minute mark, but a tremendous save by Creighton’s Keelan Terrell prevented a score, ending the match at the 2-2 tie.

Nebraska returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 20 at home against Baylor. The match is set to begin at 1:05 p.m. and will be streamed on B1G+.
