Nebraska blows late lead in loss to Oklahoma

The Huskers entered the final day of the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, facing off against Oklahoma.

The Huskers entered the final day of the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, facing off against Oklahoma. Nebraska fell in the ninth to Texas Tech on Saturday and couldn’t change the script against the Sooners.

The Huskers built up a 6-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, but Oklahoma scored four unanswered runs, including two in the ninth. Both of the Sooners’ runs in the ninth came with Nebraska needing one more out.

The Huskers put seven total pitchers on the mound and produced ten strikeouts but surrendered 11 hits and seven runs. In the batter’s box, Joshua Overbeek delivered a hit and two RBIs. Both Josh Caron and Riley Silva delivered two hits and an RBI two hits and an RBI.

Nebraska falls to 1-2 on the season. The Huskers will travel to Phoenix, Arizona, to face Grand Canyon in a four-game series from Thursday to Sunday. The first pitch for Thursday’s game is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN+.

Former Husker Casey Thompson commits to Oklahoma

A former Husker is returning home to finish his college football career.

A former Husker is returning home to finish his college football career. Quarterback Casey Thompson announced on Twitter that he is transferring to Oklahoma for his final year of eligibility.

Thompson spent one year at Nebraska after spending four seasons at Texas. The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native would then transfer to Florida Atlantic but would tear his ACL three games into the 2023 season.

Thompson will be the third quarterback in his family to don the Sooner jersey, joining his brother, Kendal, and his father, Oklahoma legend Charles Thompson.

In his career, Thompson played 32 games and threw for 5,338 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions. His best season came in his lone year at Nebraska, despite not playing in every game. Thompson threw for 2,407 yards, 17 touchdowns, and ten interceptions.

Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s Loss to Oklahoma

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s loss to Oklahoma.

On September 17, the Nebraska Cornhuskers lost to the Oklahoma Sooners 14-49.

The Cornhuskers got off to a promising start jumping out to a 7-0 lead. However, the Sooners imposed their will for the remainder of the first half building up a 35-7 lead by halftime, and the Cornhuskers could not recover.

The Cornhuskers and interim head coach Mickey Joseph will have a lot of work to do to turn this season around.

Saturday’s loss was embarrassing, and Nebraska did not play well on either side of the ball. Nevertheless, there were a couple of players who had good individual performances.

Let’s take a look at the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s loss to Oklahoma.

Inside the Box Score: Key stats from Nebraska’s loss to Oklahoma

The Nebraska Cornhuskers lost to the Oklahoma Sooner 14-49, and two statistics stood out.

On September 17, the Nebraska Cornhuskers dropped to 1-3 following a 14-49 blowout loss to the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Cornhuskers struggled on both sides of the ball. On offense, they recorded 164 total passing yards and averaged a mere 3.6 yards per rush attempt. Meanwhile, Nebraska’s defense looked outmatched against Oklahoma’s offense. At halftime, the Sooners had already jumped out to a 35-7 lead.

The Cornhuskers still have eight games remaining on their schedule, but they will face some tough opponents including Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, and Minnesota.

Luckily, interim head coach Mickey Joseph will have some extra time to work with the team. Their next game is not until October 1, when they will face Indiana.

Here are two key stats from Saturday’s loss.

Social media reacts to Nebraska’s loss to Oklahoma

And a report surfaces during the game that Nebraska has contacted Urban Meyer about the opening.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse… it gets worse. Nebraska was blown out by No. 6 Oklahoma 49-14 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. But, if it could have gone wrong for Cornhuskers, it did. Every issue this Nebraska team had shown through its first three games of the season showed up all at once against the Sooners. The helplessness of the offensive line to hold blocks, poorly timed penalties, an inability to tackle in the open field, and turnovers at the most inopportune moment. All of it led to Oklahoma scoring their highest total of road points in rivalry history. The previous record had been 48 points.

Oklahoma amassed 580 total yards of offense, with 268 yards coming through the air and 312 yards via the ground. Nebraska gained 327 yards on the day, with both starting quarterback Casey Thompson and backup Chubba Purdy splitting playing time. Purdy brings a different dimension to the offense with his running ability, given the woeful offensive line play through four games this season. It’ll be interesting to see if Purdy gets more opportunities on the field.

Eyes will continue to focus on the coaching search off the field, especially after Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reported during the game that Nebraska has already contacted Urban Meyer as the Husker athletic department tries to determine its list of candidates for its head coaching vacancy. This search sounds like it’s about to get very interesting.

The Scott Frost-less Cornhuskers stumble into the contest after falling 45-42 to Georgia Southern on Saturday. The loss was their eighth in their last nine games with seven of those losses coming by one possession. Unsurprisingly, Nebraska AD Trev Alberts announced Frost’s firing after Saturday’s loss while naming associate head coach Mickey Joseph as the Cornhuskers’ interim head coach. Frost finished his Nebraska coaching career with a 16-31 record and .340 winning percentage, the second-lowest of any Huskers football head coach who had held the role for more than four years. Nebraska’s lone win of the season was a 38-17 victory over FCS member North Dakota in Week 1.

Oklahoma is ranked No. 6 in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25. The Sooners defeated UTEP 45-13 in Week 1 and Kent St. 33-3 in Week 2. Last season, Oklahoma put up a 10-2 record in the regular season, beating Oregon in the Alamo Bowl.

Last year, the No. 3-ranked Sooners squeaked by Nebraska 23-16 at home after the Huskers missed two field goals and an extra point that was blocked by Oklahoma and returned for a two-point conversion. The 2021 meeting marked the first time in 11 years that the two teams had clashed and Oklahoma leads the all-time series, which dates back to 1912, by a tally of 46-38.
