Turnovers doom Nebraska football in 13-10 loss to Maryland

The Huskers spent the entire season struggling to perform on offense.

The Huskers spent the entire season struggling to perform on offense. Nebraska averaged under 20 points and over two turnovers per game, with two quarterbacks heading into its Saturday showdown with Maryland. Somehow, the Huskers’ offense hit rock bottom, losing to the Terrapins 13-10.

Nebraska saw three quarterbacks sit under center throughout the game: Heinrich Haarberg, Jeff Sims, and Chubba Purdy. The trio combined for 86 passing yards, 66 rushing yards and five turnovers. Haarberg got the start but was benched after an interception and an injury. Sims took over and helped Nebraska score all 10 points. But he threw two interceptions and fumbled once.

Purdy then came in on what would be Nebraska’s final drive and almost led the Huskers to a game-winning score. But threw an interception in the endzone, which ended up being the play of the game for Maryland. The Terrapins marched down the field and kicked a game-winning field goal on the next drive for the win. They only scored six points off the five turnovers, but it was enough to secure a win.

This overshadowed the rest of Nebraska’s play in the game, as they rushed for 183 yards and held Maryland to its lowest-scoring scoring performance of the season, as well as forcing three turnovers.

The Huskers now stand at 5-5 on the regular season and will travel to Wisconsin next Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be viewed on NBC.

Husker quarterback discusses relationship with coaching staff

Nebraska starting quarterback Heinrich Haarberg met with the media earlier in the week.

Nebraska starting quarterback Heinrich Haarberg met with the media earlier in the week. The Nebraska native was confirmed as the starting quarterback for this Saturday’s game against Maryland. Haarberg was asked about his relationship with head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield as the season has evolved.

“Coach Rhule it’s weird as a first year, especially when I’ve been here. He didn’t recruit me, he met my family for the first time a couple weeks ago, he didn’t know what kind of environment I grew up in, how I handled things and he’s seen how I handled it. He’s just kind of ran with it and as we finish out this year, going into next year he’s getting to know me better and I’m getting to know him better too. How he treats me, some weeks he’s been on me really hard and other weeks he’s kind of backed off, just let me do my own thing. I think it’s a good balance of both.”

The quarterback will lead the Huskers against Maryland this Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. and the game can be seen on Peacock.

Huskers sticking with Haarberg heading into Maryland game

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule has confirmed that sophomore quarterback Heinirch Haarber will be the Huskers’ starting quarterback on Saturday against Maryland.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule has confirmed that sophomore quarterback Heinrich Haarberg will be the Husker’s starting quarterback on Saturday against Maryland. The Kearney, Nebraska native struggled in their 20-17 loss to Michigan State last Saturday.

The starting quarterback only threw for 129 yards with two interceptions and seven sacks for a passer rating of 67.3. He didn’t add much on the ground either, adding 14 carries for 31 rushing yards.

Rhule was asked why he decided to stick with the quarterback and cited his character and leadership skills as a big reason Haarberg remains the starter.

“Here’s what I love about Heinrich. Not everyone would want to be the quarterback in this situation right now. There’s a lot of pressure. There’s a lot riding on your shoulders. If you don’t play well, if you don’t execute the option well, if you don’t execute the zone reads well, if you don’t execute the power sweeps well if you don’t throw the ball well – there’s not a lot of margin of error for us on offense right now. We don’t play well. Every play is really kind of squarely on his shoulders. As we continue to grow, you hope that you just hand the ball off every once in a while and we’re just playing at a level where it’s not all on his shoulders, but to go out and be the quarterback on a team that’s battling every week in close games.”

The head coach reiterated that Haarberg is embracing the pressures that come with being Nebraska’s starting quarterback, not running away from them.

“That’s what I respect so much about Heinrich. He wants to do it. He wants to be out there. As I’ve told him, when I coach Heinrich, I’m not coaching him for right now. I’m coaching him for next year and the year after. Not that we’re not trying to win right now, but we are going to address everything as it comes, and we are going to push him through because I think he’s a winner. I think he’s tough, and I think he’s learning on the job. He didn’t play for a couple of years, so he’s catching up. It’d be one thing if we were sitting here at 2-6 or 2-7 and no one was paying attention, and you can make mistakes. Here, the games are all in the balance, and everyone is watching.”

For the season, Haarberg has thrown for 967 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s also added 477 yards on the ground and five touchdown passes.

Nebraska will next take the field on this Saturday when the Huskers host the Maryland Terrapins. Kick-off is at 11:00 a.m. and can be seen on Peacock. A photo gallery of Heinrich Haarberg’s season can be found below.

Nebraska football comes up short against Michigan State

The Huskers traveled to East Lansing, Michigan for a chance to punch their ticket to a bowl game for the first time since 2016.

The Huskers traveled to East Lansing, Michigan, for a chance to punch their ticket to a bowl game for the first time since 2016. This ended up being easier said than done. Nebraska hit the roadblock that was Michigan State. The Huskers battled the Spartans and saw numerous opportunities to win. The options fell by the wayside, resulting in a 20-17 loss for Nebraska.

The Huskers’ offense saw most of these opportunities but struggled to take advantage of them. Their biggest came in the fourth quarter. After scoring a touchdown to cut the deficit to three, Nebraska got the ball back with over two minutes left. The Huskers fumbled, resulting in a Michigan State takeaway. Nebraska got the ball one more time with under a minute left but once again failed to take advantage.

Heinrich Haarberg went 12-of-28 for 129 yards and two interceptions, his worst outing as Nebraska’s starting quarterback this season. Haarberg also rushed for 37 yards off 14 carries and a touchdown. However, they also fumbled twice, one resulting in a turnover and the other on the team’s final drive.

Freshman Emmett Johnson led the charge for the Huskers in rushing, going for 57 yards and a touchdown off 13 carries. This all culminated in just 17 points, an ongoing flaw that finally caught up with Nebraska’s defense. The Blackshirts held the Spartans to just 63 yards rushing but surrendered 232 yards passing and two touchdowns.

The Huskers fall to 5-4 and will face three difficult opponents for its remaining regular-season outings. They will travel back home to host Maryland next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and can be viewed on Peacock.

Rhule on victory over Northwestern ‘we’re not going to play in fear’

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the Cornhusker’s 17-9 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the Cornhusker’s 17-9 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. When asked about the performance of the passing game, Rhule stated that the plays were there to be made.

“We’re not going to play in fear, the passes were there. A lot of our passes were like, hey it’s a pass with a quarterback draw. The pass might happen and I said at one point we’re starting to get a little bit on hey we’re running the ball, we’re better when we are mixing it. We come out of a wheel route and Alex (Bullock) is wide open. We didn’t quite hit it today. I don’t know how we’re going to get better if we don’t call it and work through it.”

Nebraska had its lowest passing yard output of the season, with starting quarterback Heinrich Haarberg going 8-17 for 85 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions

Through Nebraska’s first seven games, the Cornhuskers are averaging a paltry 134 passing yards per game. Rhule also made it clear that he will never shy away from the opportunity to make a big play.

“I don’t worry about things that, like three quick passes and our defense is tired. When the time of possession is tilted in our favor or when it’s close or even. The defense isn’t tired. I don’t worry about those things. If I was thinking that way I probably wouldn’t and I would say hey just run the ball, we have a lead. But we took the shot to Malachi (Coleman). We had some other shots in the game we thought we were going to have and made a couple of plays.”

Rhule went on to say that the Cornhuskers will continue to be aggressive on the offensive.

“I just think we have to continue to be aggressive and we just have to coach our way, and work our way through these phases of, you know what, hey it’s not super pretty right now just keep playing.”

Nebraska will take the field next against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday, October 28, at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Find a photo gallery of the victory over Northwestern below.

Husker football pulls away in 17-9 win over Northwestern

The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium saw a wild showdown.

The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium saw a wild showdown. In the first few minutes of the game, Nebraska found itself in a disastrous position against Northwestern. The Huskers’ two first drives resulted in two straight interceptions, giving the Wildcats prime field position. But Nebraska stepped up and fended off Northwestern when it counted, resulting in a 17-9 2023 win.

Heinrich Haarberg stumbled out of the gate with the two interceptions. But he went the rest of the game without any costly errors. Haarberg threw eight completions off 17 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, he ran for 72 yards and a touchdown off 16 rushes. Emmett Johnson led the Huskers in rushing yards in the win, going for 73 yards off 12 carries.

Though Northwestern finished with more total offensive yards than Nebraska, the Huskers’ defense kept the Wildcats to just nine points. The Blackshirts brought the pressure, delivering eight total sacks in the game.

But the Huskers also struggled to put points on the board. However, each time Nebraska scored, it was big. Haarberg’s rushing touchdown handed the Huskers the lead and his 44-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Coleman extended that lead to 17-6.

With the win, Nebraska moves to 4-3. The last time the Huskers got to four wins before the last game of the season was in 2019, when they defeated Northwestern 13-10 to move to 4-2. Nebraska will remain at home next Saturday against Purdue. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and can be viewed on FS1.

Nebraska quarterback talks evolution of Husker offense

Nebraska’s starting quarterback met with the media on Tuesday afternoon.

Nebraska’s starting quarterback met with the media on Tuesday afternoon. Heinrich Haarberg was asked about the current evolution of the Husker’s offense between the start of the year and now.

The Husker’s signal caller told the assembled press that things are constantly evolving, and recent injuries haven’t helped.

“I think we saw from spring into the fall that this offense is constantly evolving, just because we have so many dynamic players. We have had a couple injuries, guys that need, as we said, need to come along a little bit. So, when guys like Marcus (Washington) go down, that kind of takes away some of the experience on the outside, so you have to change a little bit. But I don’t think we’re going to shift entirely as an offense. It’s just shifting the load a little bit.”

Jeff Sims had started this season under center, but injuries and a problem with turnovers led to sophomore Heinrich Haarberg taking over as the QB. Rhule says that Haarberg will remain the starter for the foreseeable future.

“But to me, Heinrich’s played well, Heinrich’s done some good things, so he’ll be the starter.”

Haarberg has thrown for 631 yards for the season with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s also run for 353 and three touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards per rush.
