Nebraska’s head coach discusses sign-stealing conversations in the Big Ten

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon. One of the topics of conversation continues to be the allegations of sign stealing against the Michigan Football team.

Nebraska lost to the Wolverines in the fifth game of the regular season by a score of 45-7. The head coach of the Cornhuskers was asked about the allegations and if he has had any recent conversations with other conference coaches or Big Ten officials.

“No one is having conversations with me. At the end of the day, what’s the Husker prayer? Dear Lord, the battles we go through in life, we ask for a chance that’s fair. That’s all I want. Every game, I want the 60 minutes of the game to be fair, not tilted one way or the other. I just think I want to do things right so our players learn the difference between right and wrong, even in competitive equity.”

He also expressed frustration at the manner in which some people have defended the alleged actions against the Wolverines.

“I think it’s a shame when people say ‘well, it wouldn’t have mattered.’ It is what it is. Other people have talked about it. It happened, whether it affected it or not, none of that matters to me. I just feel bad for our guys. They look at me like ‘hey, coach, what are you doing about this?’ So I do feel like I need to say something on their behalf. We carry this record, but I just want everything to be fair. That’s all I care  about.”

Nebraska will now prepare to host the Maryland Terrapins at Memorial Stadium this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and can be seen on Peacock. You can find a photo gallery of Nebraska’s loss to Michigan below.

Why did Nebraska’s run game struggle against Michigan

Nebraska’s running game hit a brick wall on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska’s running game hit a brick wall on Saturday afternoon. The Huskers only ran for 137 yards against the Michigan Wolverines.

And 74 of those 137 yards came on one carry by converted wide receiver Josh Fleeks. For an offense that was averaging 234.8 yards on the ground per game to only rush for 137 yards comes as a great disappointment.

Jim Harbaugh said that he had respect for Nebraska’s rush offense, and the Wolverine’s preparation showed.

It’s a great formula, it’s a great formula. Stopping the run and being able to run the ball is a winning formula in football. We’ve just got to play good. It will be a game of blocking, tackling, focusing on fundamentals, reads, getting off blocks, defeating blocks, playing the assignment, the right alignment in the right technique. A lot of focus on real football fundamentals and technique.

Rhule says ‘everyone in Nebraska will find out about this team next Friday night’

Rhule says ‘everyone in Nebraska will find out about this team next Friday night’ after loss to Michigan

Nothing went right for Nebraska on Saturday afternoon. The Huskers were blown out at home by the No. 2 ranked Michigan Wolverines 42-7 in front of a sold-out crowd at Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska will now prepare for a rare Friday night game when they travel to Illinois. After the loss, head coach Matt Rhule said that the game on Friday and how the team responds will tell the story of the 2023 season.

We should never accept losing. We should never be like ‘it’s okay. It’s Michigan, it’s okay.’ We should never accept that at all. They shouldn’t be real positive. Everyone in Nebraska will find out about this team next Friday night. We’ll find out about me. We’ll find out about them. We’ll find out about all of us on Friday night. And that doesn’t mean winning and losing. If Illinois is better than us, so be it.

Rhule also made it clear that this will not be a loss that he will forget about any time soon.

But, we’ll see it on Friday night. We’ll see how excited we look, how much we’re flying around, what we look like. We’ll see. I hope it bothers them and we’re in a day and age where sometimes, everyone wants to be too cool for school. I hope it bothers them because it bothers me. I can tell you that much right now. That game bothered me a lot.

He also stressed the importance of winning and losing as a team.

I will say this – I love these players. They’re great young men and they all want to win. There’s no ‘hey, it’s their fault.’ We’re all in it together. We’ll battle. We’ll find out who we are Friday night, so I hope everyone watches.”

Nebraska now prepares for Illinois on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on FS1.

Nebraska football blown out by No. 2 Michigan 45-7

The Huskers fall to 2-3 on the season.

The Huskers entered the ultimate storm of the 2023 season, hosting No. 2 Michigan in a David and Goliath showdown. But the Wolverines’ first touchdown, a helmet catch from Roman Wilson, showed how stacked the cards were against Nebraska as it was blown out 45-7.

The Husker’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter. Senior receiver turned running back Josh Fleeks took his only handoff of the game and went 74 yards for a touchdown. Fleek’s only run of the game made him the team’s leading rusher, as the offense rushed for just 106 total yards. Heinrich Haarberg started once again for Nebraska at quarterback, finishing 14-of-25 with 199 passing yards.

This added to the offense’s total of 305 yards in the game. However, 126 came in the fourth quarter, with 74 yards coming from Fleeks’ touchdown run. In the first three quarters, Michigan tallied 368 yards on offense, leading to five touchdowns. The Wolverines ended the day with 436 total yards on offense, with 249 yards on the ground, the most Nebraska’s surrendered all season.

The Huskers fall to 2-3 on the season, but their most challenging game of the season has now passed them. Nebraska will travel to Champaign, Illinois, to face off against the Fighting Illini. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night and can be viewed on FS1.

Nebraska wide receiver switches to running back

With the recent injuries to the Nebraska running back position, a Husker wide receiver is making a change.

With the recent injuries to the Nebraska running back position, a Husker wide receiver is making a change. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield has confirmed that Josh Fleeks has made the conversion from wide receiver to running back.

Fleeks is a sixth-year senior who is spending his first season at Nebraska. So far this season, he had only one catch for four yards.

He initially played at Baylor from 2018-2022. He made 69 catches for 707 yards and three touchdowns in his Bear’s career.

Fleeks, who was recruited and played for Rhule at Baylor, said that Rhule is a coach you will want to run through a wall for.

“I’m telling you right now, you guys better watch out because Matt Rhule is coming on campus and will change many things at Nebraska. This is my thing from being a former coach: When players believe and have confidence in what’s going on, they’ll run through a wall for you. And that’s Matt Rhule,” says Fleeks on Matt Rhule back in early January.

Fleeks is transitioning after season-ending injuries to Gabe Ervin Jr. and Rahmir Johnson.

What Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh had to say about Nebraska’s run offense

Through four games of 2023 and, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have one of the best rushing attacks in the county.

Through four games of 2023 and, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have one of the best rushing attacks in the county. The Huskers currently average 5.52 yards per rush and 234.8 yards per game.

This weekend, they’ll be facing off against one of the best-rushing defenses in the country in Michigan. The Wolverines are currently ranked 12th in the country, surrendering only 2.76 yards per rush and 80 rushing yards a game.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh talked about the value of having a solid run game and the problems it could cause the Wolverines on Saturday.

On top of Nebraska’s potent run game, their run defense currently stands as the best in the nation. The Huskers give up only 1.83 yards per rush and 46.2 yards per game.

Why Matt Rhule views Michigan as a template for Nebraska

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule is a fan of Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh and the way in which he’s built his team.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule is a fan of Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh and the way in which he has built his football team. When Rhule met with the media earlier in the week, he highlighted how the Wolverines are a template for how he wants to build his Nebraska teams.

“Everything. You think about when Coach (Jim) Harbaugh first came in, he was taking over after a couple of years of not being a great program after being a great program. He’s recruited. I worked at one of his camps when I was the head coach at Temple. You guys probably don’t remember, but he was the guy that started the satellite camps. It was a big controversy at the time. He was the first person to go at 12:01 to someone’s house for recruiting. I did that. I didn’t like doing it, but I did it, because he was doing it. He’s had a real impact on the game.”

Rhule also talked about some of the differences between the two programs as well.

“Sometimes I’ll have recruits say to me ‘well, Coach, are we going to be good? Should I go to Michigan?’ Well, he did it. And that’s what we’re doing. His blueprint for building that program, for the way that they play, a lot of those things are similar. Obviously, we want to have a little bit of an option element at times, too. So there’s differences, but the overarching blueprint for being great on the o and d-lines, having good quarterback play, being physical at tight end, all those things – that’s what we’re doing.”

Haarberg has been at Michigan since 2015, and in that time, he has a record of 75-25 (52-17) with two Big Ten Championships (2021 & 2022) and two College Football Playoff appearances (2021 & 2022).

Nebraska has released their updated depth chart for this weeks game against the No. 2 ranked Michigan Wolverines.

Nebraska has released their updated depth chart for this weeks game against the No. 2 ranked Michigan Wolverines. When releasing the depth chart, head coach Matt Rhule told the media that he will continue the montinor the quarterback battle between Heinrich Haarberg and Jeff Sims throughout the week.

“Excellent team. They’re the number two team in the country for a reason. It’s a great opportunity for us, experience for us. We’ll see tomorrow, Heinrich (Haarberg) and Jeff (Sims), in terms of how they practice. Obviously, Heinrich didn’t finish the game. I don’t think it’s much, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see him. We’ll see where Jeff is at, so we have a full picture of that. Luke Reimer will be questionable for the game as we sit here right now. We’ll see where he’s at. With that, I’ll see what questions you guys have.”
