Husker defense continues to impress

In a season of ups and downs, the Nebraska defense has been one of the few spots of consistency.

In a season of ups and downs, the Nebraska defense has been one of the few spots of consistency. Through ten games, the blackshirts rank No. 17 overall in total defense at 306.9 yards per game. They also rank No. 18 in the country, surrendering only 18 points per game.

Following Nebraska’s loss to Maryland on Saturday afternoon, head coach Matt Rhule told the media that the defense was dominant but still left several big plays on the field.

“It’s the same thing, it’s the same game. They’re all the same games for us. It was pretty dominant on defense for long stretches and then an explosive pass. Dominant on defense, an explosive pass. If we continue to minimize those things, we could be even better on defense. They took the ball away today, which was great. I don’t know if we sacked the quarterback or not, maybe once or twice. I thought the defense came to play.”

The Huskers rank No. 16 overall in sacks with 29.0 through ten games. Rhule went on to say that it is no mystery why these tough losses keep happening

“As I told them, the things that cause winning and losing it’s not this mysterious thing out there. It’s winning the turnover battle, fourth-quarter shutouts, all the different things that we were not able to do tonight. We still had a chance to win. I know we’re pretty disappointed, but we’ll regroup.”

Nebraska will take the field again on Saturday when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to take on the Badgers. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Turnovers doom Nebraska football in 13-10 loss to Maryland

The Huskers spent the entire season struggling to perform on offense.

The Huskers spent the entire season struggling to perform on offense. Nebraska averaged under 20 points and over two turnovers per game, with two quarterbacks heading into its Saturday showdown with Maryland. Somehow, the Huskers’ offense hit rock bottom, losing to the Terrapins 13-10.

Nebraska saw three quarterbacks sit under center throughout the game: Heinrich Haarberg, Jeff Sims, and Chubba Purdy. The trio combined for 86 passing yards, 66 rushing yards and five turnovers. Haarberg got the start but was benched after an interception and an injury. Sims took over and helped Nebraska score all 10 points. But he threw two interceptions and fumbled once.

Purdy then came in on what would be Nebraska’s final drive and almost led the Huskers to a game-winning score. But threw an interception in the endzone, which ended up being the play of the game for Maryland. The Terrapins marched down the field and kicked a game-winning field goal on the next drive for the win. They only scored six points off the five turnovers, but it was enough to secure a win.

This overshadowed the rest of Nebraska’s play in the game, as they rushed for 183 yards and held Maryland to its lowest-scoring scoring performance of the season, as well as forcing three turnovers.

The Huskers now stand at 5-5 on the regular season and will travel to Wisconsin next Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be viewed on NBC.

Husker defense ready for test against Maryland

Nebraska is preparing to face Maryland this Saturday at Memorial Stadium and head coach Matt Rhule knows that the Husker defense will be tested by Terrapins offense. Rhule told the media that the staff and team can look back to prepare for the future.

“I think we go back and look at Michigan State. It’s the same game as lots of other games. When we gave up a big play and we tackled it. We go back to Northwestern. It was three trips to the red zone and it was three field goals. This past game the ball got down there and it was a touchdown. The ball game gets a little bit away from you and it was 20-10 it wasn’t really that far away, it ended up being 20-17.

Linebacker Luke Reimer told the media that the Maryland offense may appear to be one-dimensional but says that’s far from the truth.

“They just throw the ball around a lot. When they run it too, they’re successful in the run game. They’re not just a completely one-sided team. They have stable backs that are pretty solid, so we have to make sure when they run the ball, we tackle it well. They pass the ball I think 75% of the time or something crazy like that, so we have to make sure that when they do run it, we knock it out to make them one-dimensional. We have to be able to cover guys in scramble drill and keep their quarterback in the pocket and make throws hard for him. They’re obviously a great team, so we’re excited for it.”

The Huskers will face Maryland this Saturday at 11:00 a.m., which can be viewed on Peacock. Find more comments from head coach Matt Rhule on Nebraska’s defense below

Huskers preparing for pass-happy Maryland

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are preparing to host the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are preparing to host the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday at Memorial Stadium. A significant focus of the preparation has been on the offense of the Terps.

Maryland boasts the second-ranked passing offense in the Big Ten, with an average of 280 passing yards a game. Starting quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has thrown for 2,486 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions on the year.

Head coach Matt Rhule says that his team is excited by the challenge.

“Yeah it’s a heck of a challenge and an opportunity. The great thing about Maryland is that all of our guys know how good they are. They’ve seen them and they know who Maryland is. It was 17-17 against Ohio State late in the third quarter. They are an excellent, excellent football team. To me the challenge for us has always been to humbly prepare for the other teams and the opponent but to never make it about the opponent. To not sit there and say, ‘What if they do this and do that?’ Instead make it about us.

Through nine games this season, Nebraska has been surrendering 221 passing yards a game while boasting the third-best rushing defense in the country, only allowing 70.4 rushing yards per game. Rhule said that his team knows what to expect this weekend.

“So again the lessons always go back to just, ‘Hey guys trust yourself. Trust your technique. Do your assignment. Play hard. Play together.’ And we are probably going to have a chance to win games. And even though we didn’t do that the whole game it’s still 20-17 late in the game. So you still had a chance with the ball to win the game. So let’s just build off of that. It’s a really explosive offense. It’s a real challenge for our guys. They know what’s coming and they won’t be surprised. They will have to play their best to have a chance against this offense.”

Nebraska will next take the field this Saturday when the Huskers host the Maryland Terrapins. Kick-off is at 11:00 a.m. and can be seen on Peacock.

Huskers sticking with Haarberg heading into Maryland game

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule has confirmed that sophomore quarterback Heinirch Haarber will be the Huskers’ starting quarterback on Saturday against Maryland.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule has confirmed that sophomore quarterback Heinrich Haarberg will be the Husker’s starting quarterback on Saturday against Maryland. The Kearney, Nebraska native struggled in their 20-17 loss to Michigan State last Saturday.

The starting quarterback only threw for 129 yards with two interceptions and seven sacks for a passer rating of 67.3. He didn’t add much on the ground either, adding 14 carries for 31 rushing yards.

Rhule was asked why he decided to stick with the quarterback and cited his character and leadership skills as a big reason Haarberg remains the starter.

“Here’s what I love about Heinrich. Not everyone would want to be the quarterback in this situation right now. There’s a lot of pressure. There’s a lot riding on your shoulders. If you don’t play well, if you don’t execute the option well, if you don’t execute the zone reads well, if you don’t execute the power sweeps well if you don’t throw the ball well – there’s not a lot of margin of error for us on offense right now. We don’t play well. Every play is really kind of squarely on his shoulders. As we continue to grow, you hope that you just hand the ball off every once in a while and we’re just playing at a level where it’s not all on his shoulders, but to go out and be the quarterback on a team that’s battling every week in close games.”

The head coach reiterated that Haarberg is embracing the pressures that come with being Nebraska’s starting quarterback, not running away from them.

“That’s what I respect so much about Heinrich. He wants to do it. He wants to be out there. As I’ve told him, when I coach Heinrich, I’m not coaching him for right now. I’m coaching him for next year and the year after. Not that we’re not trying to win right now, but we are going to address everything as it comes, and we are going to push him through because I think he’s a winner. I think he’s tough, and I think he’s learning on the job. He didn’t play for a couple of years, so he’s catching up. It’d be one thing if we were sitting here at 2-6 or 2-7 and no one was paying attention, and you can make mistakes. Here, the games are all in the balance, and everyone is watching.”

For the season, Haarberg has thrown for 967 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s also added 477 yards on the ground and five touchdown passes.

Nebraska will next take the field on this Saturday when the Huskers host the Maryland Terrapins. Kick-off is at 11:00 a.m. and can be seen on Peacock. A photo gallery of Heinrich Haarberg’s season can be found below.

Nebraska’s Week 11 matchup against Maryland receives kickoff time

Nebraska’s Week 11 matchup against Maryland will be an early kick in Lincoln.

On Monday morning, the Big Ten announced the kickoff times and television assignments for the conference’s Week 11 schedule, including Nebraska’s home matchup against the Big Ten East’s Maryland Terrapins.

The Cornhuskers and Terrapins will kick off at Memorial Stadium at 11:00 a.m. CT on November 11. The matchup will be televised exclusively on Peacock.

To watch the Huskers’ take on the Terrapins, viewers will have to subscribe to Peacock, which offers two different plans. Their premium plan is priced at $5.99 per month, and their Premium Plus plan is priced at $11.99 per month.

The Maryland Terrapins are 5-3 on the season, including 2-3 in conference play, as they enter a Week 10 matchup against Penn State this weekend. Mike Locklsey’s program started 5-0 this season but has lost three straight games, falling to Ohio State, Illinois, and Northwestern.

The Week 11 matchup between the Huskers and Terrapins will be just the third meeting between the two programs all time. The two sides previously met in 2016, a 28-7 win for the Cornhuskers in Lincoln. They also met in 2019, a dominant 54-7 win for the Huskers on the road in College Park.

Before the Cornhuskers turn their attention to Maryland, they will have to take care of business against the Michigan State Spartans this weekend in East Lansing. The Spartans, after starting 2-0 this season, have lost six straight, including a 27-12 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers this past weekend in Minneapolis.
