First look: Auburn at Penn State odds and lines

Previewing the Auburn at Penn State Week 3 matchup, with college football odds, trends and head-to-head records.

Big Ten vs. SEC bragging rights are on the line Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET when the No.12 Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0) host the No. 20 Auburn Tigers (2-0) at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. Below, we look at the Auburn at Penn State odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Penn State already has a major win under its belt, a 16-10 victory in Week 1 at No. 17 Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions then coasted through their Week 2 matchup, beating Ball State 44-13. The Penn State racked up 493 total yards in the tune-up against Ball State but struggled against a much tougher Badger defense in the opener.

This matchup marks Auburn’s first true test of the 2021 season. The Tigers have steamrolled their first two opponents (60-10 vs. Akron; 62-0 vs. Alabama State), but the low level of competition doesn’t tell us much about an Auburn team that went 6-4 last season.

Auburn at Penn State head-to-head

There’s nothing to be gleaned from the head-to-head matchups, as Auburn and Penn State have only played twice (1996 and 2003). Penn State has been on a roll against spread recently, covering in its last six games dating back to last season.

The preseason No. 18 Hawkeyes looked dominant in its debut, beating No. 17 Indiana 34-6 last week behind a defense that allowed just 233 total yards and saw DB Riley Moss return two interceptions for touchdowns.

No. 8 Iowa State looked rustier in its tune-up last week. They were a 29-point favorite against FCS opponent Northern Iowa but squeaked by in a 16-10 win. This is a consensus top-10 Cyclone team that won six of its last seven games in 2020 and might have been caught looking ahead to this in-state showdown.

First look: Washington at Michigan odds and lines, can the Huskies recover?

Previewing the college football Week 2 matchup between Washington Huskies and Michigan Wolverines, with odds, trends and head-to-head records.

The Washington Huskies (0-1) and Michigan Wolverines (1-0) meet in a non-conference matchup at Michigan Stadium this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ET.  Below, we look at Washington at Michigan odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

This was supposed to be one of the marquee matchups of Week 2, but the FCS Montana Grizzlies spoiled that with a 13-7 stunner over preseason No. 21 Washington Saturday. The Huskies managed just under 300 yards of total offense and didn’t turn the ball over. So this upset can’t entirely be written off as a fluke.

Michigan took care of business against in-state MAC opponent Western Michigan Saturday, winning 47-14. The offense racked up over 550 total yards thanks to an efficient performance from QB Cade McNamara (9-for-11, 136 yards, 2 TDs) and 70+ yards rushing from three different players. The Wolverines defense gave up just 310 yards.

Washington at Michigan head-to-head

Michigan holds a 7-5 advantage in this series, but even the oldest players on the field this Saturday were toddlers when these two last met in 2002.

Washington played just four games in 2020, and while they went 3-1 and won the Pac-12 North, they covered just once in those four games. Michigan didn’t fare much better last season as they failed to cover the spread in any of their last five games.

First look: Stanford at USC odds and lines, Trojans are heavy favorites

Previewing the college football Week 2 matchup between the Stanford Cardinal and USC Trojans, with odds, trends and head-to-head records.

The Stanford Cardinal (0-1) and USC Trojans (1-0) renew their annual rivalry this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET in L.A. Memorial Coliseum.  Below, we look at Stanford at USC odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

Rankings according to the USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll.

The preseason No. 14 Trojans pulled away late in their opener, a 30-7 win over San Jose State. Star QB Kedon Slovis went 24-for-36 for 256 yards and 2 TD, though the defense showed some holes through the air as San Jose State threw for 308 yards. USC has now covered four of its last five games dating back to last season.

Stanford’s opener was ugly in an early (9:00 a.m. PT) neutral-site game against Kansas State in Dallas Saturday. The Cardinal mustered just seven points and 233 total yards of total offense in a 24-7 loss. Its once-vaunted running game averaged 1.7 yards per carry with little rhythm from their two-quarterback rotation through the air (6.5 yards per attempt).

Stanford at USC head-to-head

Saturday marks the 100th meeting between these two in a long-standing rivalry. They didn’t face each other in 2020 due to the COVID-shortened season; the last time they missed a year was during World War II. USC holds the all-time series lead 63-33-3.

More recently, USC has won three of the last four games in this series, beating Stanford in their last two home games by a combined 87-44 score.
