Ohio State CB Ryan Watts enters the transfer portal, Texas expected to be involved

A potential transfer target for Texas?

With all the buzz surrounding quarterback Quinn Ewers and where he will play next season, another talented Ohio State player has entered the transfer portal.

Former four-star cornerback Ryan Watts started the Buckeyes’ season opener against Minnesota before moving to a reserve role for the rest of the year. He finished the 2021 season with six tackles and two interceptions in six games played.

The 6-foot-3 defensive back will have three years of eligibility at his next destination and has shown the ability to play both corner and safety.

With the loss of Josh Thompson to the NFL, along with BJ Foster and Chris Adimora to the transfer portal, it would make sense for Texas to reach out to Watts as the Horns could use some depth in the defensive backfield.

During his original recruiting process, current Texas cornerbacks coach Terry Joesph had a relationship with Watts while at Notre Dame.

Texas Football: Two defensive backs enter the NCAA transfer portal on Friday

Two experienced defensive backs for Texas chose to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Friday.

The Longhorns are continuing to experience attrition, as two more players decided to enter their name in the NCAA transfer portal on Friday.

Texas safety and former five-star recruit BJ Foster will be looking for a new home as a graduate transfer, and fellow defensive back Chris Adimora will also be testing the transfer portal waters.

Foster was a highly touted recruit that came to the Forty Acres with high expectations. He was an immediate contributor for the Longhorns as a freshman, and was consistently in the lineup throughout his four years in Austin.

He recorded 168 total tackles, five sacks, and five interceptions with Texas. That’s solid production numbers wise, but he always seemed to be having some sort of issue whether it be injury or a starting role.

Foster is notorious for quitting the team in the middle of a game against UTEP in 2020, and this season he was criticized for taking a putrid angle during the Kansas State game on a long touchdown run that Saw Steve Sarkisian become furious, causing Foster to not play the rest of the game. Foster has the potential to help a team out, but he needs to improve upon his efforts in order to really reach his maximum potential.

In terms of Adimora, he was a player that the previous staff loved last season as he started all 10 games, but when the new staff came around they seemed to not have the same fondness of the California native as he fell all the way to No. 3 on the depth chart. While on the Forty Acres, Adimora accumulated 61 total tackles, seven pass defections, and one interception.

It is no surprise that either of these players are entering the transfer portal, as Foster and this staff clearly did not see eye to eye at times, and Adimora was buried on the depth chart that is expected to become much deeper after this recruiting cycle and via the transfer portal.

Foster and Adimora mark the No. 9 and No. 10 players from Texas that have entered the portal.

Top offensive players in the transfer portal that Texas should add

Landing a few of these players would give Texas a major boost on offense.

The transfer portal is becoming more and more active, and teams like Texas are working hard to take advantage of the fact that they can add immediate impact players to their roster.

There is high level talent all over the portal with former five-stars, and players who excelled at a lower level school and are now looking to take their talents up to the next level.

The Longhorns have been in the mix for a few players up to this point, but missed out on UNLV linebacker transfer Jacoby Windmon, who decided to take his talents to Michigan State.

There were also a few players that I had mentioned a couple weeks ago that Texas should kick the tires on, like Oregon transfer Mycah Pittman, but he seems to be deciding between Florida State and Arizona State.

Just because Texas missed on a couple targets doesn’t mean that they can’t still capitalize on the bountiful talent within the portal.

Here are five offensive players currently in the transfer portal that Texas could use to instantly upgrade their roster.

Where the top receivers in the portal are projected to land

Where a few of the top pass catchers in the transfer portal are projected to end up.

The transfer portal is full of program-changing players that could propel a team from mediocrity to the top of the college football world.

Whether it be quarterbacks from the transfer portal like Joe Burrow leading one of the most prolific offenses of all time, or a receiver like Alabama’s Jameson Williams who just needed a chance to prove that he could be the best player at that position in the nation.

Schools like Texas, who are particularly weak in certain spots on the roster, are paying close attention to the portal to try and add immediate contributors to help turn around a program that has been struggling for over a decade.

There are a few talented receivers in the portal already. Multiple four-star prospects have decided to go elsewhere after a coaching change or for other reasons.

Here are where a few of the top receivers in the portal are projected to go via 247Sports’ crystal ball predictions and various media reports.

UNLV transfer linebacker Jacoby Windmon commits to Michigan State

Texas will have to look elsewhere for help at the linebacker position.

Disappointing news for Texas as former UNLV linebacker Jacoby Windmon has committed to play at Michigan State.

Windmon had a standout season at UNLV tallying an impressive 118 tackles and 6.5 sacks. 247Sports has him rated among the top 20 players in the transfer portal.

Although Windmon was a priority target for Steve Sarkisian and his staff, all hope is not lost at linebacker. Texas received great news earlier in the week as DeMarvion Overshown announced he will return for the 2022 season and the commitment of four-star linebacker Kobie Mckinzie.

Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski did not have his first year go as planned. The Texas defense ranked outside the top 100 in the country against the run, a major contributor for the team’s 5-7 record.

The Horns will still look to add more depth to the linebacker position as national signing day approaches and more talent enters the transfer portal.

A member of the Clemson football program took to social media on Tuesday and called out the use of the NCAA transfer portal.

Tigers defensive analyst Deandre McDaniel, a two-time All-American for Dabo Swinney back in his playing days at Clemson, expressed his frustration with the transfer portal in a post on Twitter.

McDaniel called the portal “embarrassing,” likening it to NFL free agency, and believes it “will kill more careers than help.”

Clemson’s involvement in the transfer portal has heated up this season — not by addition but rather by subtraction.

Eight Clemson players have entered the portal since the start of the season, including quarterback Taisun Phommachanh, receiver Frank Ladson, linebacker Kane Patterson, safeties Ray Thornton and Joseph Charleston, offensive lineman Paul Tchio and running backs Lyn-J Dixon and Michel Dukes.

Two Longhorns enter the NCAA transfer portal on Monday

Texas is starting to experience a little more attrition as their offseason goes on, which is something head coach Steve Sarkisian expected.

Texas has been experiencing quite a bit of attrition lately, with multiple players choosing to enter the NCAA transfer portal. It’s something head coach Steve Sarkisian expected in order to improve the roster for next season.

That trend continued on Monday as two reserve players in offensive lineman Rafiti Ghirmai and defensive back Marques Caldwell entered the transfer portal.

Ghirmai, a fourth-year player and former four-star prospect out of Frisco, was always viewed as having potential. However, he was unable to consistently crack the lineup under Tom Herman and Steve Sarkisian.

Most of Ghirmai’s contributions came on special teams or in blowout wins. He was honored on Senior Day against Kansas State and appeared in 13 games throughout his tenure in Austin.

Caldwell is another player who was never really able to climb the depth chart or become a contributor. The former three-star prospect registered just one career tackle in three years as a Longhorn.

With Ghirmai and Caldwell added, it now marks five players from Texas who have decided to test the transfer waters since the start of November. While that may seem like an alarming amount, it frees up more room for recruits and other transfers to come to Austin.
