Aggies baseball tops Louisiana, advance to Regional Final

Aggies beat Ragin Cajuns, 9-6 to advance to Regional Championship round.

The Aggies baseball team kicked off the College Station Regional on Friday afternoon with an 8-2 victory over Oral Roberts, and Saturday evening, they took the field for their second round matchup against Louisiana. The Ragin’ Cajuns reached the matchup with the Aggies after beating TCU Friday night.

The scoreboard operator got a workout early in the game, as the Aggies put up 4 runs in the first inning, as both Ryan Targac and Brett Minnich had two run singles off Cajun’s starter Jacob Schultz. But the Cajuns wouldn’t let the Aggies run away, as they scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Heath Hood double.

Aggies starter Nathan Dettmer gave up runs in teach of the first three innings, and in all gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings, and left the game with his team behind 6-4.

But the Aggies bullpen was able to steady the ship, and at the plate, the usual suspects pushed the Aggies back out in front. It started in the top of the 7th, as Targac, Troy Claunch and Minnich strung together three hits in a row to tie the game, and in the 8th, Austin Bost homered in Jack Moss to put A&M up 8-6. Kole Kaler added some insurance with a solo homerun in the 9th, and Minnich made a diving catch in right field in the bottom of the inning to finish off the game.

The Aggies will face the winner of the Ragin Cajun’s rematch with the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday evening, with two chances to punch their ticket to the Super Regional round.

Notre Dame takes a few for the team, wins again in Statesboro Regional

One win away from the Super Regionals

It has not been easy for the Irish so far, but you wouldn’t know it by the results. Once again, Notre Dame scored late and held off their opponent, this time host Georgia Southern feeling the luck of the Irish.

After falling behind by a run early, the Irish put together two runs, both solo home runs by [autotag]Jack Zyska[/autotag] and [autotag]Jack Brannigan[/autotag]. Georgia Southern would then battle back to take a 4-2 after top of the sixth. The Irish bats once again answered in the bottom of the inning, as [autotag]Zack Prajzner[/autotag] blasted a two-run home to even the score at four.

The Irish would then score two more runs in the bottom of the seventh in an unconventional way. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded scored the go-ahead runs for the Irish, 6-4.

[autotag]Matt Bedford[/autotag] would then struggle but [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] has his back. Bedford allowed back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third. Findlay relieved him and promptly struck out back-to-back batters and got a ground out to end the inning. That wasn’t the end of Findlay’s brilliance, he would then shut down Georgia Southern in the top of the ninth, securing the win for the Irish, 6-4.

[autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] has now lead this team to one win away from a return to the Super Regionals, NCAA Baseball’s version of the ‘Sweet 16’ for the second consecutive season.

No. 9 Texas opens the NCAA tournament with an 11-3 win over Air Force

Texas is off to a fantastic start to the NCAA Tournament.

No. 9 Texas baseball could not ask for a better start to the NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns took down Paul Skenes and Air Force 11-3, saving relief pitcher Tristan Stevens in the process.

Texas was able to force the Falcons to the bullpen in the fifth inning by taking excellent at-bats and working deep into many counts. Skyler Messinger had a huge day at the plate, going 4-5 with three RBI. The third baseman broke the game open with a bases loaded RBI single in the fifth.

Texas’ offense would keep the foot on the gas all game, finishing with 11 runs on 12 hits.

Pete Hansen brought his prototypal ace stuff on Friday. The lefty held down Air Force’s powerful offense to just three runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Marcus Olivarez and Coy Cobb provided strong innings of relief to close the door.

Texas is on to the winner’s bracket and will face the winner of Louisiana Tech and Dallas Baptist on Saturday night.

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. Texas Tech

Like the Irish here?

In a battle between two ranked teams in the Statesboro Regional, Notre Dame and Texas Tech both will try to avoid the brink. The Irish can help their cause with the superior pitching in this matchup. Their hitting is pretty good, too, even if their ability to accumulate extra-base hits is average at best. Put those two elements together, and there’s no reason to think they can’t win at least one game in this regional.

The Red Raiders enter the tournament with one of the best offenses in the country. The frequency with which they hit doubles and home runs especially has led to a lot of runs and high slugging and on-base percentages. However, don’t look for them to steal a lot of bases, which takes some of the pressure off opposing pitchers in the stretch. Their pitching better back up the offense in this regional, or they will have a short stay in this tournament.

Aggies baseball land #5 overall NCAA tournament seed

Aggies land #5 overall seed in NCAA baseball tournament

The Aggies baseball team had an incredible season, winning the SEC west regular season championship, and making a trip to the SEC tournament semifinals, where they lost to the Florida Gators.

With the semi-final loss, the Jim Schlossnagle and the fightin Texas Aggies baseball team turned their attention to the NCAA tournament. It was an almost certainty that the Aggies would be hosting a regional, but there was some uncertainty regarding exactly where their tournament seeding would fall.

On Monday, the NCAA released the tournament bracket, and the Aggies received the #5 overall seeding in the tournament.

The College Station Regional will feature the following teams:

  1. Texas A&M
  2. TCU
  3. Louisiana
  4. Oral Roberts

The Regionals will take place the weekend of June 3rd through June 6th.

LSU baseball makes NCAA Tournament field, heading to Hattiesburg Regional

The Tigers are the No. 2 seed in the regional hosted by Southern Miss.

LSU is headed to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for the Hattiesburg Regional as the No. 2 seed to open the NCAA Tournament, the selection committee announced on Monday afternoon.

I’m nicknaming this the “All-Gold Regional” because every team has some form of gold in their color scheme. LSU’s first game will be against the No. 3 seed Kennesaw State Owls (35-26) on Friday night. The Owls were the champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

The winner of the Hattiesburg Regional will play against the winner of the Coral Gables Regional. Miami is the host for that one. The Arizona Wildcats are the No. 2 seed, Ole Miss is the No. 3 seed, and Canisius is the No. 4 seed.

Looking at the full bracket, I would say LSU got a really favorable draw as far as their regional is concerned. Some of these regions are absolutely stacked. The Miami regional is one of them that has three really good baseball teams. The Gainesville and Louisville regionals are insane.

The No. 4 seed in the Gators‘ regional has a record of 42-17 just to describe how insane it is. Regional play is a double-elimination format and LSU has a great shot at finding their way to the Super Regional, at least.

Alabama Baseball not selected for NCAA Tournament, ends season

Alabama Baseball’s season comes to a disappointing end after not being selected for the NCAA Tournament

A solid showing in the SEC Tournament was not enough for Alabama Baseball to land a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Alabama hoped that making a deep run in Hoover, which included wins over two NCAA Tournament teams in Georgia and Arkansas, would help their stock rise in the eyes of the selection committee. But, as the final name was announced during the Selection Special on ESPN, Alabama did not see its name in the bracket.

With their name not being called for the NCAA Tournament, the season comes to a close for Alabama.

The Crimson Tide join Mississippi State, Missouri, South Carolina, and Kentucky as programs not getting the chance to continue their season. Kentucky’s failure to not become selected is as much of a surprise as Alabama, due to the Wildcats playing five games in Hoover, winning three of them.

The Crimson Tide finish the season with a 31-27 record, and 12-17 in SEC play.

D1Baseball sends Arkansas to Stillwater in final Field of 64 projections

In the final Field of 64 projections by D1Baseball, Arkansas would begin their postseason journey just down the road in Oklahoma.

As conference tournaments come to a close on Sunday, the NCAA Tournament becomes more and more clear.

For Arkansas Baseball, who have lost four games in a row and are 2-6 over their last eight games, their dreams of hosting a regional have all but disappeared.

But, their postseason journey will not take them too far says D1Baseball.com in their latest “Field of 64” projections.

In the lasted projections that were released Sunday, Arkansas is cast as the no. 2 seed in the Stillwater Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys are expected to become the no. 14 overall seed after falling to Texas in the Big 12 Conference Tournament semi-finals. Joining Arkansas and Oklahoma State in the regional would be mid-major power Dallas Baptist, as well as Southeast Missouri.

According to the projections, the Stillwater Regional would be paired with the Blacksburg Regional, hosted by no. 3 overall seed Virginia Tech, which features UCLA, Virginia Commonwealth, and Coppin State in addition to the Hokies.

Arkansas will discover their official postseason fate on Monday morning at 11 a.m. CDT. Stay tuned to Razorbacks Wire for the latest in Arkansas Baseball news.

Notre Dame falters late, doesn’t advance to ACC Baseball Championship

It was a great run

It was a very good run by the Irish baseball team, but unfortunately they fell just one game short of advancing to the ACC Championship game. It was a tight game, one that saw Notre Dame and North Carolina tied 2-2 after seven innings. Unfortunately for the Irish, the Tar Heels plated three runs in the top of the eighth while Notre Dame bats went cold over the final innings before falling 7-2.

It was a historical run for Link Jarrett’s team, as this was the farthest the Irish have gone in the ACC Baseball Tournament. The Irish will miss a chance for an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, but will make it anyways in a season where they were ranked for the whole season.

They key for the Irish in the first-round of the NCAA’s will be having the regional at home. Many of the projections had them just inside the range of hosting the initial round. The ideal situation would be having the first two-rounds in South Bend, and making the College World Series for a second year in a row.
