NC State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wolfpack miss from the Coastal Division?

The Wolfpack don’t get to play Duke or Georgia Tech from the Coastal, but they’re also missing defending ACC champ Pitt, Miami, and Virginia.

That means they get Virginia Tech – a Thursday night game coming off an open date – and North Carolina. Not only do they have to play the Tar Heels in the rivalry game, but it’s just six days after going to Louisville.

In the Atlantic, they have to start out ACC play at Clemson, but most of the other big matchups are at home – going to Syracuse and Louisville isn’t a big deal.

NC State Football Schedule What To Know: There’s a nice buildup to the ACC season

NC State has as nice a September as can be asked for. There aren’t any conference games, there are two layups against Charleston Southern and UConn, and there’s a strong Opening Week test at East Carolina to get the juices flowing, and there’s Texas Tech coming to Raleigh.

If this is as good a team as it’s supposed to be, it should be 4-0 going into the ACC opener at Clemson.

It’s not bad.

Again, there’s a nice mix in September to build up to the rest of the slate, and the killer against Clemson is out of the way early. There isn’t another game after that to totally freak out about.

It’s a schedule built for a monster season. Get by the Tigers in Death Valley, and look out.

NC State Wolfpack College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– The offense bounced back nicely from a rough and rebuilding 2019. It stalled late in the year, and it only averaged 385 yards and 30 points per game overall, but there’s a whole lot of pop and firepower returning to what should be one of the best attacks yet in the Dave Doeren era.

– The quarterback situation will supposedly be locked down in fall camp, but it’ll be Devin Leary’s gig. Bailey Hockman – last year’s leading passer – is off to Middle Tennessee, and Ben Finley is a good option, but Leary is back from the broken leg he suffered early last year after throwing eight touchdown passes with two picks in four games.

The three top targets are all back. 6-3, 220-pound Emeka Emezie is a matchup problem – he caught 47 passes for 738 yards yards and five scores – and Thayer Thomas led the team with six touchdown passes in the slot. Throw in 6-4, 215-pound Devin Carter, and there’s size, experience, and options. The only slight hiccup is at tight end with Cary Angeline done, and the 6-5, 245-pound Dylan Parham is more of a big blocker.

– There will be some shuffling on a line that gets back four starters, but has to be stronger in pass protection and more dominant for the ground game. It’s not a big line, but 325-pound sophomore Ikem Ekwonu brings the size at left tackle. The shuffling will go on at guard, but there’s depth and a few options to play with. Center is set with veteran Grant Gibson a true quarterback up front.

There’s a nice 1-2 rushing punch with ten-touchdown leading rusher Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person two good-sized backs who can move. Third leading rusher Jordan Houston is back, too, adding some potential flash.

NC State Wolfpack Football Schedule Analysis: Four of the first five games are at home, but that comes at a cost. One of the games is against Clemson, the road game in the mix is at Mississippi State, and then comes the problem with four of the following five games on the road.

The Pack get the groove back late with Syracuse and North Carolina at home, and that run of road games isn’t all that bad. They should be strong enough to at least with two of them, if not three, and they need to take care of Louisville at home in the eyes of the road game storm.

NC State Wolfpack Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: 9-3. Assume a loss at home to Clemson, let’s throw in a loss at Miami, and factor in one other defeat against – most likely – North Carolina. Every other game is winnable including the dates at Florida State and Wake Forest. It might take a win against Miami or UNC to get to nine, but it’s possible.

NC State Wolfpack Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: 5-7. Even if NC State falls off the map, it should be strong enough to get by USF, Furman and Louisiana Tech. However, every other game on the slate will require effort, and there’s certainly a chance that things aren’t working right and it losses at least six of the ACC games and the date against Mississippi State.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: NC State Wolfpack Offense 3 Things To Know

– All of a sudden, the offense just stopped. The Wolfpack attack that had no problems blowing past the 5,000-yard mark for five straight years under head coach Dave Doeren – and flirting with 6,000 in 2018 – wasn’t even close last year, finishing 11th in the ACC in total yardage and 12th in scoring.

After scoring 28 points or more in nine of the last 12 games two years ago, the 34-23 win over Ball State was the only time in the last ten games last year when the team scored more than 26.

There were two massive problems: 1) turnovers – more on that later on in the Keys To The Season – and 2) a lack of passing efficiency.

QB Matt McKay left for Montana State, but Devin Leary is backs after taking his lumps as a freshman. The 6-2, 212-pounder only hit 48% of his passes for 1,219 yards and eight scores with five picks, and 6-2, 208-pound junior Bailey Hockman hit 56% of his throws for 546 yards and a score with four picks. Leary has the inside line on the gig again, but freshman Ben Finley will get a long look.

– The running back corps was really, really, really young – three then-freshmen and one sophomore – and they’re all back. Now-sophomore Zonovan Knight led the team with 745 yards and five scores, sophomore Jordan Houston is a slasher who was second on the team with 526 yards and two scores, and 6-1, 220-pound Ricky Person Jr. is back after running for 229 yards and three scores despite missing half the season with an ankle injury.

The offensive front that was good in pass protection and wasn’t a huge part of the problem – even though it wasn’t quite consistent enough. Fortunately, most of the starters are expected back. Starting guard Josh Fedd-Jackson is in the transfer portal, but there’s hope for an even stronger season around the other four parts.

– Tabari Hines is gone, but everyone else returns to a receiving corps that should be good if the quarterback play is better. 6-3, 210-pound senior Emeka Emezie is a big No. 1 target who led the way with 56 grabs, but he didn’t do much deep – that’s not his game, though.

6-4 sophomore Devin Carter is another big target – he was second on the team with 456 yards – and Thayer Thomas smallish quick receiver who can do a whole lot more than 31 catches. Throw in All-ACC tight end Cary Angeline, and there’s a lot to like about this group.
