NC State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wolfpack miss from the Coastal Division?

The Wolfpack don’t get to play Duke or Georgia Tech from the Coastal, but they’re also missing defending ACC champ Pitt, Miami, and Virginia.

That means they get Virginia Tech – a Thursday night game coming off an open date – and North Carolina. Not only do they have to play the Tar Heels in the rivalry game, but it’s just six days after going to Louisville.

In the Atlantic, they have to start out ACC play at Clemson, but most of the other big matchups are at home – going to Syracuse and Louisville isn’t a big deal.

NC State Football Schedule What To Know: There’s a nice buildup to the ACC season

NC State has as nice a September as can be asked for. There aren’t any conference games, there are two layups against Charleston Southern and UConn, and there’s a strong Opening Week test at East Carolina to get the juices flowing, and there’s Texas Tech coming to Raleigh.

If this is as good a team as it’s supposed to be, it should be 4-0 going into the ACC opener at Clemson.

NC State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not bad.

Again, there’s a nice mix in September to build up to the rest of the slate, and the killer against Clemson is out of the way early. There isn’t another game after that to totally freak out about.

It’s a schedule built for a monster season. Get by the Tigers in Death Valley, and look out.

UCLA vs NC State San Diego Country Credit Union Holiday Bowl Preview

UCLA is back in a bowl game. By now, the Chip Kelly era was supposed to be rocking and rolling. Even though this wasn’t a Pac-12 Championship season, it was a great step forward after a few seasons of struggling.

Now the Bruins are bowling for the first time since 2017 – they haven’t won a bowl since 2013 – and this one game can set the tone for the offseason and going into 2022.

Yeah, UCLA closed with three straight wins, and yeah, it beat USC in a blowout. But the Trojans upped the game with the hiring of Lincoln Riley. Anything less than a bowl win will make the fan base nervous.

The Bruins are tough, the downfield passing game was the best in the Pac-12, and the run defense held up well. Now it all has to work against a rock-solid NC State team that lost just two ACC games by a total of four points.

The Wolfpack have a terrific passing attack, the defense was third in the ACC overall and second in points allowed – giving up fewer than 20 per game – and they have a style that should be able to control the tempo throughout.

North Carolina vs NC State Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

From all indications, Sam Howell is supposed to be back after missing the Wofford game with what’s being called an upper body injury.

The offense moved just fine last week without him, but obviously having a future NFL starter under center makes a difference.

This hasn’t been the most consistent of teams from the start, but the offense kicked it all in over the finishing stretch.

The running game has been amazing – 220 yards or more in five of the last six games and over 300 in two of the last three – and the passing attack has been 200 yards or better in every game but the win over Miami, and now it’s time to let loose.

The pressure is ALL on the other side of the field because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why NC State Will Win

NC State will play for the ACC Championship with a win and a Wake Forest loss at Boston College on Saturday. If it loses, it’s out, and if it loses and Wake Forest also loses, Clemson is in.

The Wolfpack, though, have been smoking.

They lost to Wake Forest – hence the issues with controlling their own destiny – but Devin Leary and the passing game have rolled for over 300 yards in each of he last five games and for 230 or more in every game.

The O is more than equipped to keep up in a shoot out.

However, the defense is just good enough to keep Howell and the Tar Heel passing game in check.

The Wolfpack have come up with 14 interceptions on the year and allowed multiple touchdown pass just twice in the last six games. They’re great at keeping the big plays downfield to a minimum, the defense leads the ACC in third down stops, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Be really disappointed if this isn’t a fun shootout.

Both teams will bomb away, the two quarterbacks will have a whole lot of fun in what should be an emotional firefight.

North Carolina won’t be able to run like it wants to and it won’t be able to move the chains often enough. This game will be about which defense can do a better job of holding serve.

NC State is great at getting the D off the field, and North Carolina isn’t. NC State can protect Leary, North Carolina can’t protect Howell.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Syracuse vs NC State Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can the running game get its groove back?

It was rumbling right along with star RB Sean Tucker and QB Garrett Shrader going off – the Orange lead the ACC in rushing with 237 yards per game – and then came last week against Louisville.

The Orange threw for 46 yards, the running game couldn’t do anything other than get Tucker going a bit, and everything crashed in a 41-3 loss.

The ground attack has to take over, the defensive front has to keep on being a bother in the backfield with its great pass rush, and the D overall has to keep the mediocre NC State running game from rolling.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why NC State Will Win

The NC State run defense has been fantastic.

It’s the best in the ACC allowing just over three yards per carry and gave up just one score before allowing one to Florida State and three to Wake Forest over the last two games.

No one other than Louisville has been able to run for more than 140 yards and average more than five yards per pop against the Wolfpack defense that’s amazing on third downs, is decent at taking the ball away, and should hold up against the one-dimensional Orange O.

And …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Devin Leary keeps on playing like he belongs in the conversation of the ACC’s top quarterbacks – yes, even with Kenny Pickett and Sam Howell.

He’s coming off a 408-yard day against Wake Forest, he threw four touchdown passes in each of his last three games, and over 300 yards in each of his last four, and …

The NC State run defense will take care of this.

NC State vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

It’s not about stopping Wake Forest. It’s about being able to come up with enough key stops to let your own offense take over.

North Carolina was able to do that late in the 58-55 win over the Demon Deacons, and now the ACC’s best scoring defense and second-best D overall should be able to hold up just enough.

Again, Wake Forest is going to get its yards and points, but the Wolfpack are amazing at coming up with third down stops and bring the best run defense in the ACC.

Lost in all of the high-powered fun from the Demon Deacons is how they can hit 200 yards on the ground if needed. That’s not happening against NC State.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Yeah, the NC State defense is terrific, but it’s about to deal with a Wake Forest offense that puts up 600 yards getting off the bus.

Granted, it ripped up Duke, Army, and an inconsistent North Carolina defense over the last few weeks, but QB Sam Hartman is in total control of the attack, the big plays are there from the veteran receiving corps, and it’s all going against a defense that hasn’t seen anything like this.

Mississippi State doesn’t crank it up deep like Wake Forest does, but it was able to beat the Pack earlier in the year with the controlled passing game. Louisville was balanced with over 200 yards both rushing and passing – even in a loss to NC State – and now Wake Forest should be able to move the offense on a D that allowed over 400 yards in three of its last five games.

But …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

NC State has a passing game, too.

It might not be quite as fun and thrilling as the Demon Deacon attack, but the Pack have hit 300 yards through the air over each of the last three games and it’ll do that this week, too.

Every Wake Forest game is wild and crazy, but NC State will be able to hold up just enough defensively to allow red-hot QB Devin Leary and the offensive side take over to make the ACC Atlantic race really, really interesting.

The two will be tied up top record-wise after this with the Wolfpack in control of its ACC destiny.

NC State vs Florida State Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

Even with a tough loss at Miami a few weeks ago, NC State is still in the ACC title hunt with a big showdown this week and the big battle with Wake Forest coming up.

The defense got back on track with a terrific performance against Louisville, the passing game is getting even stronger, and now the Wolfpack gets a Florida State team that’s still struggling a bit on the offensive line and doesn’t have enough of a passing attack to worry about.

NC State has this as long as it doesn’t royally screw up – it hasn’t turned the ball over in the last four games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Florida State Will Win

It’s all about the ground attack.

Florida State has a nice all-around offensive balance, but when it runs well it wins. When it runs sort of well, it loses.

It took Notre Dame to overtime after tearing off 265 yards, and since then it’s 3-0 when getting to 230 yards or more and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

At home, the defense that’s been quietly okay all year – not amazing by Florida State standards, but decent – should be good against the NC State running game, but it’s about the other side because …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Stop the run, stop Florida State.

NC State’s defensive front should get into the backfield and should hold up well. It gave up over 200 rushing yards for the first time last week against Louisville and still won easily. This won’t be so simple on the road.

FSU will make this interesting – not last 60 seconds of last week against Clemson interesting, but it’s not going to get blown out – but the Wolfpack won’t make the big mistakes and they won’t give up the massive rushing yards.

Louisville vs NC State Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

The running game picked a great time to come up with its best performance of the season.

At 3-3 and in desperate need of a win to stay in the hunt for a bowl game, the Cardinals rolled for 331 yards on the ground. Trevion Cooley ran for over 100 yards, and QB Malik Cunningham put up 133 yards and three touchdown.

Throw in the steady production from Jalen Mitchell, and with Hasaan Hall running for over 100 yards in the previous game against Virginia, and the ACC’s great running game has a ton of weapons.

Get that attack going, rely on the defensive front to generate enough pressure to force a few stops, and hope this gets into a shootout.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why NC State Will Win

The ACC’s best defense is amazing against the run.

Louisiana Tech was able to come up with 139 yards, and that was the best anyone’s been able to do. The D hasn’t allowed more than 100 yards on the ground in four of the last six games – it’s allowing 93 rushing yards per game.

The offense doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter, the defense is phenomenal on third downs, and it should all work against an inconsistent Cardinal team that has way too many holes.

NC State has one of the nation’s most consistent passing games – 230 yards or more in every game – but it’s 0-2 when it doesn’t get to 120 rushing yards. Louisville allowed 86 yards on the ground against Eastern Kentucky, and 35 in the loss to Virginia – but the Cavaliers threw for almost 500.

The Wolfpack will blow past 130 yards on the ground, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can NC State’s pass defense come through?

It’s 4-0 when it doesn’t allow 200 yards through the air, it had to much of a fight against a bad Louisiana Tech team that threw for 341, and it lost when Mississippi State almost got to 300 and gave up 325 to Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke.

Louisville has thrown for 200 or more in every game but last week against Boston College, and that’s when it ran wild.

NC State’s defense was great against a whole lot of mediocre offenses, but it hasn’t faced anyone with Louisville’s versatility and balance. There’s going to be one problem …

The Cardinals will turn the ball over in a key spot, and the Wolfpack won’t.

NC State vs Miami Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The defense is doing a phenomenal job of generating stops to get off the field.

No. 1 in the nation at generating third down stops, the Wolfpack allowed 11-of-33 conversions over the last two games and they’re still giving up just 25% on the year.

Miami’s defense isn’t generating those stop on third downs, and it’s not coming up with enough big plays period. The offense needs any sort of help it can get without D’Eriq King around, and the other side just isn’t getting the job done.

On the flip side, NC State leads the ACC in total defense and comes up with the takeaways the Hurricane defense is supposed to.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

The offense hasn’t been bad under Tyler Van Dyke.

He’s not King, and he only hit 44% of his passes with three picks against North Carolina, but he’s thrown for over 200 yards in each of his three starts and the team was in a position in each of the last two games to get wins.

No, the Hurricane defense hasn’t been good enough, but the plays in the backfield are there and any pressure should be enough for the secondary.

NC State is doing a lot of things right, but it’s not coming up with a whole lot of big plays down the field – last week’s win over Boston College aside.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Miami finally catch a break and be on the right side of a close game? Eventually, yes, but not against this NC State team.

The Wolfpack D is too strong, and the O is too good at consistently just keeping things moving, and three takeaways will be enough to open things up by the early fourth quarter.
