On Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell looking to build a new era of the NBA

Who will take the torch of leadership for future generations of Association players?

Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown has long been unafraid to take a leadership position among his peers in the NBA, and has continued that trend with his activities in service to his role as a Vice President of the National Basketball Players’ Association, better known as the league’s Players Union.

And such was the case during an annual retreat hosted by the NBPA — this time in the region of Andalusia in Spain — where Brown joined friend Donovan Mitchell to record a podcast with former Celtics player and assistant coach Evan Turner along with the future acting head of the NBPA, Andre Iguodala. The focus of their conversation was on who will take the torch of leadership for future generations of Association players, and meandered into several other areas as well.

Bob Cousy on how he helped found the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA)

In a recent interview conducted by NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg, Hall of Fame Boston Celtics point guard Bob Cousy opened up about his role in helping to create the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) in his playing days, a move that he believes paved the way for today’s players — including the Celtics stars of today, like Jaylen Brown — signing multi-million-dollar contracts. “My last year, they told me I was the highest-paid player in the league, I made $35,000,” said Cousy.

“One of the things I’m most proud about is starting the Players Association,” he added, “because that somehow has lent itself, 60 years later, in terms of the interaction between the Players Association and the owners, to guys signing $300 million contracts for five years for playing a child’s game.”

“So I celebrate that. Really. I’m not sitting here pissed off as hell because they’re making all that money and I didn’t. I’m so pleased that I had a hand, I think, in setting the table for this.”

“It allows me to be part of the legacy of this wonderful league and sport that I was involved in, intimately, for 30 years. Or still am, in some ways,” related the Celtics great.

“It gives me a place in history. Hopefully, the league will stay alive and the Celtics will be able to win it all.”

Jaylen Brown’s presence at Boston community event speaks to his feelings about city, team

Is this a sign of his desire to remain with the Celtics and stay a Bostonian?

Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown recently returned to Boston after participating in a National Basketball Players Association event in Spain, clearing the way for the resumption of negotiations on his potential supermax contract extension.

Even with all that going on, the Georgia native took the initiative to organize and oversee the painting of a community basketball court in Dorchester, showcasing Brown’s commitment to giving back to the city and making a positive impact on the local community. Is this a sign of his desire to remain with the Celtics and stay a Bostonian?

NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg, Trenni Casey, Cerrone Battle and Tom Giles got together on a recent episode of “Arbella Early Edition” to talk over whether that might be the case.

NBPA head Tamika Tremaglio on load management and the new collective bargaining agreement

In an interview with Evan Turner NBPA chief Tamika Tremaglio revealed how the Players Association looks at load management in the league of today.

We have heard about the practice known as load management that has entrenched itself in the modern NBA, but we seldom hear about this strategy of resting players to preserve their best play for the postseason from the point of view of the organization representing the interests of the players themselves.

In an interview with former Boston Celtics assistant and player Evan Turner and Warriors wing Andre Iguodala for their “Point Forward” podcast, National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) chief Tamika Tremaglio revealed how the NBPA looks at its use and advocates for load management in the league of today.

Grant Williams to serve as next first vice-president of NBPA

Grant Williams will serve a four-year term as the new First Vice-President of the National Basketball Players Association.

Boston Celtics big man Grant Williams was elected to serve as the first vice-president of the NBA’s Players Association. Williams is the second-ranking member of the NBPA behind CJ McCollum, the organization’s president. Williams replaces Golden State Warriors guard Andre Iguodala.

Williams has served as one of the NBPA’s six VPs since 2021, alongside fellow Celtics Jaylen Brown and Malcolm Brogdon. The former Tennessee Vol will serve in this position for a four-year term.

Earlier this season, Williams suggested his role with the NBPA helps him better understand the complexities of contract negotiations. Williams and the Celtics did not agree to terms on an extension this fall, setting up restricted free agency this summer.

“It’s one of those things that you never want to take a bad deal for (anyone) around you,” Williams said.

“The role that I play as VP of the Player’s Association, you understand where the league is going in the future and where the league is currently at. For me, it wasn’t a matter of life-changing money, it was a matter of value, not only for this year, but for years to come.”

Shams: NBA, NBPA ‘in serious conversations’ over key points for next CBA

The next CBA could lower the draft eligibility age, provide team equity for players, and change the luxury tax penalties among other issues.

Per The Athletic’s NBA insider Shams Charania, the league is considering a number of changes of note to the next collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that will be voted on by the NBA’s Board of Governors sometime after the December 15 mutual opt-out date coming at the end of this year.

Perhaps the most interesting and impactful of them is an idea being advocated for by the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) of “building lasting equity for its players beyond their playing days.” In the eyes of the NBPA, the partnership between the players and the league “should create financial staying power for its constituents beyond their playing days in the form of equity.”

“Creating generational wealth is critically important in this next chapter of the Union,” related NBPA executive director Tamika Tremaglio.

It never hurts to have a union in your corner.

While we aren’t certain it will do much in the way of favoring the Boston Celtics’ interests at a team level when it comes to league negotiations with the National Basketball Player’s Association (NBPA), through a coincidence of their having traded for Indiana Pacers point guard Malcolm Brogdon, a third of the NBPA’s vice presidents are now on the Celtics roster.

Before the arrival of the Pacers floor general, the Celtics saw their star forward Jaylen Brown run for and win a seat on the NBPA executive council when he was just 22 years old. Not too long after, Boston drafted Tennessee product Grant Williams in 2019, who began serving as a player representative in his rookie season. The former Vol would make the full leap to vice president in 2021.

That same year that Williams was drafted, Brogdon was also elected a vice president, with he and Brown both re-elected to their posts this past March.

“It has been extremely rewarding to serve on the NBPA Executive Committee and I am humbled that my peers put their trust in me to continue working in this role,” said Brogdon at that time (via the NBPA).

“As a member of the Executive Committee the last few years, it has been an honor to contribute to these all-important decisions that impact our lives as players on and off the court,” added future teammate Brown.
