Bills locker room weigh-in following loss to Ravens: ‘Got to be better’

Bills lock room weigh-in following loss to Ravens: ‘Got to be better’

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”dW5kZWZpbmVk”][/anyclip-media]The Buffalo Bills lost their first game this season, 35-10 to the Baltimore Ravens Sunday night.

The Bills coaching staff has some important things to look at in terms of what could have been done differently, and their players are doing so as well.

The Ravens scored an 87-yard rushing touchdown courtesy of RB Derrick Henry. He would have almost 200 yards on the ground in the game.

The Bills defense allowed almost 300 yards of offense in the first half alone, allowing a 21-3 lead in that first half, not to mention the total 35 points.

Linebacker Baylon Spector took responsibility and commented on the defensive issues that allowed Henry to have the success he did.

“I gotta do a better job communicating, getting everyone lined up, gotta read the keys,” he said.

Spector, who has stepped up in the absence of starting inside linebacker, captain, and defensive play-caller Terrel Bernard, recovered a Lamar Jackson fumble during the contest and also noted the importance of repeating and communication.

“We just got to come out and be ready to play; come out and communicate,” he added. “I’ve got to do a better job of communicating. I’ve got to do a better job of getting the guys on the same page and getting everyone ready to go.”

Starting defensive tackle DaQuan Jones also chimed in on how they can examine what led to Henry’s big effort against the Bills defense.

“We’ll know when we watch the film,” Jones said. “They just kept getting them creases and Derrick is one of those backs, you give him a lane and he’ll take it to the crib and first play of the game, he did that, and I felt that got them in a rhythm and that kept them going after that.”

Special teams had a missed Tyler Bass field goal, and the Bills offense struggled to get on score board and comeback in the game.

While he did comment on the struggles in the loss, Allen also saw the positive takeaways and spoke to those as well.

“Not everything was bad in this game,” the Bills QB said postgame. “I don’t want us to come away from this saying ‘We’re the worst.’ A lot to learn from. I’m glad this happened early in the season so we can correct things.”

Allen knows a loss of this kind is both one to glean from as well as one to move on from to focus on the team’s next road opponent, another AFC contender in the Houston Texas.

“A lot to learn from,” Allen said. “We’ll watch this tape, learn from it, flush it, and look to the next.”

Bills’ Sean McDermott on Ravens loss: ‘They outplayed us’

Bills’ Sean McDermott on Ravens loss: ‘They outplayed us’

The Buffalo Bills had their first loss of their 2024 NFL season on Sunday Night Football this weekend, falling 35-10 on the road in Baltimore.

After a strong 3-0 start, the Bills seemed to be soaring following their biggest effort of this year’s campaign, and one of their strongest outings with Josh Allen under center, in a 47-10 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But the Ravens quickly grounded them in NFL Week 4, and Buffalo found itself on the receiving end of the type of dominant performance they had delivered to the Jags.

The Bills struggled on and off the field and lost in all three phases, and their head coach commented on that after the game.

“Give credit where credit is due, Baltimore Ravens came out and they beat us,” Sean McDermott said to the press. “They outplayed us. They outcoached us, and we’ve got to identify the problems and get them fixed.”

Baltimore scored early on an 87-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry, and never looked back, dominating the rest of the way.

“Schemed up well, yes, because they executed and we really didn’t even touch the running back,” head coach Sean McDermott said about Henry’s run. “They ran what we call ‘wham’ exactly our three-technique there. We’ve got to be in better position. I know we’ve done that before, so that’s one of the things.”

It was a tough night overall for the Bills coaching staff.

The Ravens out-schemed them in this matchup, Buffalo was slow to adjust until the second half and was not aggressive on some 4th-and-1 plays, and mismanaged the following sets of downs after conversions on others.

Then there was that failed trick play.

With the Bills trailing 21-10 in the third quarter, offensive coordinator Joe Brady dialed up a trick call on 2nd-and-7 that fell apart at the line of scrimmage.

Quarterback Josh Allen lined up at receiver, while receiver Curtis Samuel lined up at quarterback, flipping the ball to Allen, who then got hit and stripped of the pass from a hit by Kyle Van Noy who had broken through to get to the QB. The target, WR Mack Hollins, had been in double coverage downfield, and the Ravens recovered the fumble.

“I think that’s something Joe and I will talk about and something we’ll learn from,” McDermott noted. “Certainly a momentum change right there.”

Obviously the timing of the play when the offense was trying to stage a comeback was ill-advised, though successful trick plays were a staple of OC Brian Daboll’s offense with the Bills, he’d scheme them in a way that got the targeted receiver wide-open downfield.

“That’s something that Joe and I will discuss at length. I’m sure he wants that call back. I do as well. We’ll learn from that and move forward,” he added.

The loss does give them a game to reflect on and learn from before turning their focus to their next opponent, another challenger, and potential playoff squad, the Houston Texans.

Ravens’ season-opening loss to Chiefs on NBC is the most viewed NFL Kickoff game ever

Ravens-Chiefs thriller to open the season is the most viewed NFL Kickoff game ever

The NFL is big business, and that business really booms when star power is involved in huge matchups.

The NFL’s season-opening kickoff game featured the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of last winter’s AFC championship game, which the Chiefs won, 17-10.

The rematch on NBC and Peacock set records on Thursday night, peaking at almost 29 million viewers, the network announced on Friday before the Eagles and Packers showdown.

A rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game headlined by star quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, Ravens-Chiefs averaged an NFL Kickoff Game-record Total Audience Delivery (TAD) of 28.9 million viewers on NBC and Peacock, based on live plus same day custom fast nationals from Nielsen and digital data from Adobe Analytics. Ravens-Chiefs topped viewership for last year’s NFL Kickoff Game opener by 5% (27.5 million for Lions-Chiefs).

NBC Sports’ coverage peaked at 33 million viewers in the second quarter (between 9:30-9:45 p.m. ET).

The Average Minute Audience (AMA) for last night’s live stream via Peacock, NBC Sports Digital platforms, and NFL Digital platforms, was 4.6 million viewers – the 2nd most simulstreamed NBC NFL game ever, topping three NBC Super Bowls (trailing only Super Bowl LVI in 2022) – and up 65% from last year’s NFL Kickoff Game (2.8 million).

Kansas City and Baltimore were the top markets, but the other AFC North cities — Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Cleveland — played a major role in the record-breaking viewership.

Former college football great retires from NFL, joins NBC Sports’ Big Ten coverage

Former college football great retires from NFL, joins NBC Sports’ Big Ten coverage

The newly expanded Big Ten Conference will bring fans expanded game coverage in 2024.

NBC, CBS and Fox now split the conference’s television rights — which has created a full-day schedule every Saturday. It now includes a Fox Big Noon pregame show in the morning, into Fox Big Noon Kickoff, then to CBS’ Game of the Week in the afternoon and finally to NBC Saturday Night to close. Heightened interest and viewership means more investment into each broadcast. That has led NBC to make a new hire for its coverage team.

That is former Texas Longhorn great and 13-year NFL veteran Colt McCoy.

McCoy announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday after a 13-year career. He was originally a third-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2010 NFL draft. The college football great spent 2010-12 in Cleveland, 2013 with the San Francisco 49ers, 2014-19 with Washington, 2020 with the New York Giants and 2021-22 with the Arizona Cardinals.

The 2008 Heisman Trophy runner-up and 2009 finalist did not match his exceptional collegiate production. He was mostly a backup during his career, though did finish with 36 total starts of 56 games played. His final NFL numbers include 62.6% completion, 7,975 yards, 34 touchdowns, 32 interceptions, a passer rating of 79.9, 582 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

McCoy starred from 2006-09 at Texas. His stature in the college game makes him a strong candidate for NBC’s coverage of the Big Ten. Texas went 45-8 during his tenure as starter, including a national title loss to Alabama in 2009. The program was ranked within the top 10 of the AP Poll for the majority of his tenure as starter, which, paired with Texas’ brand, elevated him to the top of the game.

His stats as a college starter include 70.3% completion, 13,253 yards, 112 touchdowns and 45 interceptions.

Wisconsin’s 2024 schedule does not yet have an NBC game. That is sure to change as the season progresses.

Charles Barkley shifted the blame for TNT losing NBA broadcast rights as the company takes legal action

Charles Barkely had harsh words for the NBA after a decision from the league.

Charles Barkley was not happy with the latest about the NBA’s broadcasting rights, issuing a statement about the decision on Friday morning.

The NBA recently announced that the media rights will belong to Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon Prime Video beginning in 2025. Warner Bros. Discovery (the parent company of Turner Sports) made an effort to match the offer, but it was denied.

That is especially bad news for fans of TNT’s Inside the NBA, which will likely come to an end after prolonged negotiations at the conclusion of next season. Barkley, one of the analysts on the beloved program,

This is a massive statement from Barkley, who pointed the blame toward the league instead of his employer.

He previously said the following, blaming his bosses for botching these conversations as recently as just a couple of months ago:

“I think the first thing is, they came out and said we didn’t need the NBA,” said Barkley. “So I think that probably pissed [commissioner] Adam [Silver] off. I don’t know that, but when we merged, that’s the first thing our boss said. ‘We don’t need the NBA.’ Well, he don’t need it, but the rest of the people, me, Kenny, Ernie, Shaq and the rest of the people who work there, we need it.”

Now, it sure sounds like Barkley is arguing that the NBA and Adam Silver were not bargaining in good faith and never had any intentions of retaining rights with Turner Sports. The company said that it has taken legal action in response and a lawsuit was filed against the league.

Barkley, meanwhile, previously announced plans to retire from broadcasting at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.

If he changes his mind due to his uncertain future, he would have plenty of suitors in the media market likely including Amazon. He told The Athletic he is listening to other offers while considering his retirement options.

But based on his latest comments that featured some hostility toward tech companies, a match with Amazon seems increasingly unlikely.
