NBA players reportedly might play a mini-preseason to get back in shape

It won’t be easy getting things back on schedule.

We have no idea exactly when the NBA will finish up its 2019-2020 season, but we won’t have a decision anytime soon. Adam Silver said a decision won’t be made on its return before May at best.

Even when the decision is made, games won’t be played immediately, according to a report from ESPN’s Baxter Holmes. Players are losing their game shape with team facilities locked down.

Teams would need to take at least a month to whip players back into game shape. That could entail having another training camp and playing another  another mini-preseason to get players back up to speed, according to the report.

These teams would need at least a month to prepare, which could be broken down into one week of training camp, one week of exhibition games and two weeks of, say, regular-season games — the layout was as specific as he could be given the current uncertainty and lack of parameters.

It sounds like a lot, but this isn’t an impossible scenario to pull off. This situation is similar to the 2011 NBA lockout where players couldn’t workout or use team facilities to maintain their basketball playing shape.

The players ended up having a mini training camp and playing two exhibition games before diving into the league’s 66 game regular season on Christmas day.

There is one big difference, however.  The players could use each other’s workout facilities then. Right now they aren’t allowed any contact. And that’s a big step back. Jared Dudley talked about it in an interview with Michael Lee of The Athletic.

At least with the lockout, and I was a part of that, they locked us out. It started July 1, you weren’t allowed to use any of their facilities. We had a league. John Wall. Steph Curry. Chauncey Billups. Stephen Jackson. You had Tayshaun Prince. You had over 100 NBA players, where you could go work out.

That’s not the only wrinkle the league will have to worry about. There’s also the not-so-simple matter of player safety.  They have to house them players and keep them isolated as they play actual basketball games.

So, while it’s not impossible, the current situation is definitely a tougher hole to climb out of. It almost makes you wonder if it’s even worth trying to pull off.

The Clippers and Celtics collide in a battle between two of the best squads in the NBA. These two teams met back in November at the Staples Center and the Clippers came away with a 107-104 thrilling win in overtime. Who will exit TD Garden with a marquee victory on the eve of the All-Star break?

For Los Angeles, this contest marks its fourth and final game of the road trip. The Clippers, who sit in third place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 37-17, are averaging over 115 points per game in February. Kawhi Leonard is averaging 27.1 points per game, 7.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists this season, while Paul George is having an amazing season as well, averaging 22.6 PPG, 6.1 rebounds and four assists. Shooting guard Lou Williams and power forward Montrezl Harrell are also averaging nearly 20 points a game for this high octane offense. Williams had 27 points the first time these two teams met. The Clippers recently bolstered their lineup by adding Marcus Morris from the Knicks in a trade at the deadline. Morris was averaging 19.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

The Boston Celtics have been red-hot, winning seven of their last eight games. The Rockets broke the Celtics seven-game win streak on Tuesday, beating Boston 116-105. The Celtics kicked off the month of February with a 21-point victory over the 76ers and recently edged out Oklahoma City on the road 112-111. The team will be represented in Chicago at the All-Star game by Jayson Tatum and guard Kemba Walker, who are averaging over 22 points a game. Walker is a four-time All-Star and an integral part of this team, which sits third behind the Bucks and Raptors in the Eastern Conference. It’s been a rotating door of rest and injuries for Brad Stevens’ squad, but when in full force, it is one of the best in the league.

As the NBA All-Star break approaches, teams around the league have a few more games to survive before finally getting to rest. An East vs. West clash on Tuesday between the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers should be a very interesting matchup. Both teams are quite talented and are looking to climb up the standings.

The Clippers are within striking distance of their rivals, the Lakers, for the top spot in the Western Conference. They enter the week just three games back and are playing some good basketball heading into the break. With seven wins in their last 10 games, they could improve a bit in their consistency, but overall the new-look Clippers are right where they need to be for a second-half run. One worrying sign for Los Angeles could be Kawhi Leonard’s workload. The league’s seventh-highest scorer has already sat out 13 games this season due to injuries and fatigue.

For the Sixers, the situation is a bit more pressing. Everyone knows they have the talent to compete with any team in the league, but their performances and results this season have left a lot to be desired. Despite a current two-game winning streak, Philadelphia is just 5-5 in its last 10 games. Head coach Brett Brown has received the dreaded vote of confidence from general manager Elton Brand. However, if the Sixers don’t start living up to their potential in the second half of the season, some changes are likely to be made.

How to Watch Minnesota Timberwolves, NBA Live Stream, Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time

Watch Minnesota Timberwolves Live This Season

After a disappointing 2018-19 season, the Minnesota Timberwolves are poised to make a run at a playoff spot in the Western Conference, which is more wide open than in years past. On the back of one of the most exciting young tandems in the entire league, the hopes and expectations in the Twin Cities are rapidly rising.

Being a mid-market team in a league that functions on superstars teaming up is never easy. Free agents likely aren’t going to flock to your city. The solution? Draft well, trade well and build a solid foundation. That’s exactly what the Timberwolves have done through patience. It all starts with finding two young talents and developing them into emerging superstars. Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins were both drafted by Minnesota, both took some time to mature and now both are entering the primes of their careers and looking ready for breakout years.

Towns and Wiggins are both averaging above 25 points per game, which is tops for their young careers. It’s clear to see that they are the driving force behind the Wolves’ success. With a strong supporting cast that features Jeff Teague and Robert Covington, Minnesota has a chance to not only make the playoffs but advance past the first round, something it hasn’t done since 2004. Rebuilding is never easy, but it certainly appears that Minnesota is on the right track. With some luck and good decisions, this could be the start of something special.

Trusting the process has finally paid off in Philadelphia. After a long rebuilding period, the 76ers are now legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference. In 2018, the young Sixers emerged as a serious threat late in the season with a remarkable 16-game win streak to close out the season. While their playoff run was cut short due to a loss to the eventual NBA champion Toronto Raptors, there’s a ton of expectations and hope for 2019.

So far, so good for the Sixers. All-Star center Joel Embiid has picked up right where he left off last season. He’s averaging 22.3 points per game, while also averaging 11.8 rebounds. Couple him with offseason acquisition Al Horford, who is putting up 15.9 points and 7.4 boards per game, and they have formed one of the most formidable frontcourt tandems in the league.

Philly isn’t just strong in the paint. In fact, the team has five players averaging double-figures in points. The Sixers also have a very solid bench to pull from in case of injury or fatigue. It’s for these reasons that many believe they’ll challenge for the top spot in the East. It won’t be easy with the likes of Milwaukee and Boston again looking strong, but there’s a ton of optimism around this talented bunch.

Watch the New York Knicks 2019-20 Season Online.

Whoever coined the phrase ‘progress is a slow process’ was likely a New York Knicks fan. One of the most prestigious sports franchises in the entire world may still be as recognizable as any NBA team, but its on-court success has left them unrecognizable in the competitive sense. Going into a sixth straight season without a playoff appearance, several rebuilding attempts have come and gone in the Big Apple. Can the Knicks latest effort at building a roster able to compete be the one that gets them back on track?

RJ Barrett is the latest to bear the pressure of getting the iconic Knicks brand back into the spotlight. The No. 3 overall pick out of Duke has been tapped to be the face of the franchise heading into the future. So far, early in his rookie season, it’s been an up and down project. The 19-year-old is averaging a respectable 15.8 points per game.

Like Barrett, the Knicks as a whole have a lot of work to do to get to a level where they’re competing for a playoff spot, much less with the best teams in the Eastern Conference. There are reasons for hope in New York, even if they may seem distant. Yes, the likes of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving passed on the chance to sign, but the addition of Julius Randle in conjunction with Barrett gives the Knicks something to build off of. Perhaps another strong draft class or two and some improved luck in the free agent market could be what gets them heading back into the direction their fans expect.
