Where does Oklahoma vs. Navy in Armed Forces Bowl rank among bowl games?

Where does USA TODAY Sports rank Oklahoma vs. Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl among this year’s bowl games?

If you’ve been itching to see some throwback football, this year’s Armed Forces Bowl may be just what the doctor ordered. The Oklahoma Sooners will take on the Navy Midshipmen in a game that could resemble the “three yards and a cloud of dust” era of the game.

The Navy Midshipmen launch ground offensives to find success. Navy boasts one of the nation’s best rushing attacks with their triple option look. They’re averaging 247 rushing yards per game, which ranks eighth in the nation. Their 46 rushing attempts per game is No. 5 in the nation.

Oklahoma would prefer to have a bit more of an aerial attack, but where they’ve had success over the last month of the season, dating back to the loss to Ole Miss in Oxford, is with the ground game. They used it to beat up Alabama to the tune of 257 yards rushing and a 24-3 win. The Sooners run game is averaging 154 rushing yards per game, which is No. 24 in the nation ahead of bowl season.

There may not be a whole lot of passing but it’ll still be a fun matchup. The Sooners and Midshipmen have only played once, with Navy earning a 10-0 win back in 1965. Can the Sooners even the all-time series in a game USA TODAY Sports believes is the 16th best bowl matchup of the 2024 bowl season?

Aside from ruining things for Alabama, the Sooners’ first ride through the SEC was quite bumpy. Preparing against an academy option attack is always a challenge, and the Midshipmen could make a game of it as long as they don’t put the ball on the turf. – Eddie Timanus, USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma’s run defense, one of the best in the nation, will be tested. The Sooners have been stout up front, and their second—and third-level defenders have provided excellent run support all season. They should be able to stifle Navy’s rushing attack, but if the offense can’t get going, we may be in store for a low-scoring game.

The Sooners would like to get the passing attack going with Michael Hawkins Jr. to get him more experience, but with the wide receivers that have entered the portal, there will be a lot of inexperience on the outside for the Sooners. So you may see a battle of run games in Fort Worth on December 27.

Oklahoma Sooners learn destination, opponent for bowl season

Oklahoma Sooners learn bowl destination and opponent.

The Oklahoma Sooners earned bowl eligibility with their win over the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Sooners’ win over the Tide likely kept Alabama out of the College Football Playoff. While the Sooners aren’t heading to the playoff, they will play in a bowl game for the 26th season in a row.

On Sunday, the Sooners learned they’ll play in the Armed Forces Bowl against the Navy Midshipmen. The game will occur on December 27 at 11:00 a.m. CT in Fort Worth, Texas, at Amon G. Carter Stadium, the home of the TCU Horned Frogs.

It will be the first time OU and Navy have met on the gridiron since 1965, a 10-0 loss for the Sooners.

It will be a battle of strengths as Navy brings one of the best rushing offenses in the nation to Fort Worth. Navy is averaging 247.4 rushing yards per game, which is good for eighth place in the nation. The Sooners’ run defense has been one of the best in the country, holding teams to 105.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks 12th in the nation.

Navy is 8-3 on the season and went 6-2 in the American Athletic Conference. This season, they earned a win over Temple, but were shut out by Tulane 35-0. In their most recent outing against East Carolina, the Midshipmen beat the Pirates 34-20.

The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to avoid their second losing season in three seasons under Brent Venables.

3 College Football games to watch in Week 12

Week 12 of the 2024 college football season features some impactful matchups.

The Oklahoma Sooners have arrived at the second of their two bye weeks this season. After a 4-1 beginning to the year, OU has slid to 1-4 in the past five weeks, with the only win coming over FCS Maine.

That means that the Sooners are just 5-5 overall and just 1-5 in [autotag]SEC[/autotag] play in 2024. They haven’t won a conference game since September.

[autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag]’ team is licking their wounds after their latest defeat, and they’ll be back on the field on Nov. 23, when they host Alabama. The Crimson Tide essentially will be coming off of a bye week as well. They will face FCS Mercer on Saturday. OU vs. Alabama will be on ABC at 6:30 p.m. central time.

Even with Oklahoma off, the college football world doesn’t stop spinning in Week 12. If you’re like me, you’ll still be tuned in on Saturday, watching some of the biggest games this week’s slate has to offer.

Here are the three biggest games of Week 12 to watch while the Sooners are off.

Tennessee at Georgia

It’s easily the biggest game on the docket, as the Volunteers and Bulldogs both need a win in Athens. The Vols have just one loss (against Arkansas), but they haven’t always been their normal high-flying selves this year. Tennessee boasts a fantastic defense, and they hope to have quarterback Nico Iamaleava healthy in Sanford Stadium.

The Dawgs lost to Ole Miss last week, placing their College Football Playoff hopes in jeopardy. Georgia needs their offense to get back on track between the hedges, and they certainly don’t make it a habit to lose back-to-back games under Kirby Smart. In a loaded Southeastern Conference, this game could go a long way towards deciding who makes it to Atlanta for the conference title game.

Tennessee at Georgia will kick off on ABC at 6:30 p.m. central time.

Missouri at South Carolina

Two teams that have already beaten the Sooners this season will face off to find out who lives in the better Columbia. This one will take place in the Palmetto State, where South Carolina upset Texas A&M a couple of weeks ago. Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks are among the hottest teams in college football, and they aren’t that far away from being 8-1 this year.

Missouri hits the road after defeating Oklahoma, and the Tigers think they still have CFP chances. If they want to get back in the mix at the top of the SEC, they’ll have to go into Williams-Brice Stadium and take down South Carolina in a tough place to play.

Missouri at South Carolina will kick off on SEC Network at 3:15 central time.

Tulane at Navy

It’s not the most impressive matchup on paper, but these two American Athletic Conference foes should play a competitive game in Annapolis, Maryland. The winner has an easier path to their conference title game.

Tulane is undefeated in AAC play, and their only losses have come against Kansas State and Oklahoma. The Green Wave also feature offensive coordinator Joe Craddock, who has been linked to OU’s OC vacancy. His young quarterback Darian Mensah has been impressive in the offensive scheme, taking the reins as a redshirt freshman.

Navy has lost a couple of times since their blistering undefeated start, but the Midshipmen are looking to get back into the race in the AAC. With their annual bout with Army still on the schedule, they don’t want to get too many games back of their arch-rival when mid-December rolls around. The American champion could have a shot at a playoff spot if Boise State stumbles in the Mountain West.

Tulane at Navy will kick off on ESPN2 at 11:00 a.m. central time.

Notre Dame comes close to a school record in win over Navy

Just one more and it could have been history for the Irish

It was a great day for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, as it soundly defeated the Navy Midshipmen, 51-14.

There was plenty of good to come out of this game for the Irish, as they improved to 7-1 on the season. One of those was the plus-6 margin on takeaways, as Notre Dame didn’t give the ball away once.

Five of those turnovers caused were by recovered fumbles, which put the Irish within one recovery from a school record of six which happened in 1984 at USC according to Notre Dame’s official press release social media account. Either way, the effort was impressive, as this year’s performance of five recovered fumbles tied with four other games that has occurred for Notre Dame.

This was the first time it’s happened since 1977 against Pittsburgh, so it’s been quite a while since the Irish have been so dominant on one day. What also is unique about this statistic, was that Navy came into the game having lost a fumble just twice.

It’s a pretty cool stat considering the situation for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame football blows out Navy as the Irish get win No. 7

The Irish dominated

Notre Dame football went into MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey and absolutely dominated the Navy Midshipmen, winning 51-14.

The Irish started the game off red-hot, as they scored on their opening possession, recovered a Navy fumble, then scored another touchdown three plays later to take an early 14-0 lead.

It was one that they’d never relinquish, as Notre Dame kept the gas on the pedal, scoring 31 points at the half, while allowing just 7. The Irish out-gained the Midshipmen 466-310, while winning the turnover battle 6-0.

The battle of the two ranked teams turned out to be extremely one-sided, as Notre Dame improved to 7-1, while Navy took its first loss of the season and now stands at 6-1.

Jeremiyah Love was the star of the game for the Irish on offense, rushing 12 times for 102-yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, there were three standouts for Notre Dame, as defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka, linebacker Jaylen Sneed and safety Adon Shuler each had at least 7 tackles.

Notre Dame Week 9 highlight: Kedren Young gets first career touchdown

Kedren Young gets his first career score.

First it was Leonard Moore getting his first career interception, and now it’s Kedren Young getting his first career touchdown as No. 12 Notre Dame is blowing out No. 24 Navy at MetLife Stadium.

Young got his achievement shortly after Navy muffed a punt. He ran the ball in from 4 yards out to cap a 4-play, 16-yard drive that took 2:12 off the clock.

The score gave Notre Dame, a team that probably needs to win every game remaining on its schedule, a 51-14 lead over previously undefeated Navy.

The Midshipmen may drop out of the rankings with this loss.

Notre Dame Week 9 highlight: Another Navy muffed punt

Yet another muffed punt for Navy against Notre Dame.

No. 12 Notre Dame has recovered not one but two muffed punts by No. 24 Navy.

This time, Eli Heidenreich fumbled a James Rendell punt that was recovered by Rod Heard II.

This set the Fighting Irish up at the Midshipmen 16-yard-line. Once again, Notre Dame had a short field due to a Navy turnover.

Navy has had several unforced errors against the Fighting Irish today at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which is a big reason why Notre Dame is dominating this game.

Notre Dame Week 9 highlight: Leonard Moore intercepts one in the end zone

Notre Dame gets a big interception from Leonard Moore.

Notre Dame is starting to really put its matchup with No. 24 Navy away, thanks to Leonard Moore.

The No. 12 Fighting Irish killed a Navy drive when Midshipmen quarterback Blake Horvath threw towards the end zone on fourth down and 7 from the Notre Dame 17.

Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore was able to snag the ball for a touchback.

The Fighting Irish are keeping their playoff argument strong for yet another week, while the previously undefeated Midshipmen are probably going to drop out of the rankings.

Notre Dame Week 9 highlight: Jaylen Sneed recovers a fumble in the end zone

Notre Dame gets more points off of turnovers versus Navy.

No. 12 Notre Dame is putting a hurting on No. 24 Navy at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and turnovers by the Midshipmen are playing a huge part.

Midshipmen quarterback Blake Horvath fumbled just outside of Navy’s end zone and Notre Dame linebacker Jaylen Sneed scooped it up for the score. With a missed extra point, the touchdown put Notre Dame up 44-14 with 4:18 to go in the third quarter.

Navy’s offense was expected to give the Notre Dame defense fits, and while the Midshipmen have had a few chunk plays, turnovers have hampered Navy and given the Irish control of the game.

Notre Dame Week 9 highlight: Riley Leonard finds Beaux Collins for 37-yard touchdown

Notre Dame gets an explosive catch from Beaux Collins

No. 12 Notre Dame has responded after No. 24 used an efficient drive to cut into the Fighting Irish’s lead.

Notre Dame led 31-7 before Navy got a score on an Eli Heidenreich 1-yard touchdown run.

The Fighting Irish responded with a 7-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that ended when wide receiver Beaux Collins caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Riley Leonard.

The drive burned 3:09 off of the clock.
