Buck Showalter might have a point on MLB pitchers needing help with grip after Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch

Baseball is going to have to do something about pitching grip.

Tensions were clearly just flaring everywhere on Friday night. First, you had a fight in NASCAR. Then you’ve got benches clearing in baseball? What a night, man.

Things got a little out of hand during the Nationals and Mets game on Friday night. Nationals’ pitcher Steve Cishek accidentally beaned Francisco Lindor with a pitch that looked pretty dangerous.

The pitch hit him in the face and ended up chipping his tooth. If it weren’t for the c-flap on his helmet things could’ve ended up a lot worse. Through it all, though, Lindor maintained his composure. That was even after both benches completely cleared and ejections were handed out.

Lindor left the game, but he didn’t have any major injuries and passed concussion protocols. Cishek was ejected from the game after said he escalated things by leaving the mound.

All in all, everyone is OK and there are no actual hard feelings here, believe it or not. Mets manager Buck Showalter doesn’t even blame Cishek.

This is just part of a bigger trend around baseball that seems to be an issue.

Rams poke fun at their lack of draft picks following Washington-LA blockbusters

The Rams are willing to offer Washington a 2093 first-round pick in any possible trade.

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a blockbuster deal on Thursday just ahead of the MLB trade deadline, acquiring Trea Turner and Max Scherzer from the Nationals as they make yet another push to win a World Series. The Dodgers were already among the teams favored to win another championship, but this deal may just put them over the top.

On the same day, the Lakers also made a massive trade with a Washington team, acquiring Russell Westbrook from the Wizards. The move gives the Lakers an elite point guard to go with LeBron James and Anthony Davis as L.A. tries to win its second NBA title in three years next season.

The Rams always fancy a big trade themselves, and they had an eye on these huge moves by their citymates. They’d probably love to make an L.A.-Washington trade of their own – who wouldn’t want Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson or Jonathan Allen on the Rams? – but their draft capital is … lacking.

They even made fun of themselves for that fact on Twitter, tweeting that they have a 2093 first-round pick to offer Washington.

A 2093 first-rounder for Chase Young: Who says no? Probably the Rams, considering Young will be, well, not so young 72 years from now.

Jacob deGrom has absolutely been the best pitcher in baseball so far this season. It feels like he’s making history every night.

The Mets’ pitcher struck out a career-high 15 batters against the Nationals on Friday night. And with that epic performance, he made a bit of history to go along with it.

He has 50 strikeouts through four starts so far which is the most by a player through their first four starts since 1900, per ESPN. He also has three straight games with at least 14 strikeouts, which is the longest streak in the modern era.

But those numbers only just begin to show how dominant he’s been. You have to actually see pitch to understand how good he is right now.

This overlay of a 100 mile per hour fastball and a 93 mile per hour slider (!!!!!) from the Rob Friedman show us just how impossible it is to hit his pitches.

More power to any batter who can actually identify the difference between those pitches before they break and then actually make contact with the ball, let alone get a hit.

This dude is just nuts right now. Here’s another, featuring a fastball, a slider and a 92 mile per hour changeup.

Fam. What are you supposed to do with this? That’s just wild. Masterful pitching from deGrom.

Good luck to the rest of baseball, man. Y’all are going to need it.

New York Yankees at Washington Nationals odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s New York Yankees at Washington Nationals sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Yankees (1-0) look to start the season with a second straight win over the Washington Nationals (0-1) at Nationals Park. Saturday’s contest is slated for a 7:15 p.m. ET first pitch. We analyze the Yankees-Nationals MLB betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks and best bets around the matchup.

Yankees at Nationals: Projected starting pitchers

LHP James Paxton vs. RHP Stephen Strasburg

Paxton: 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA over 150 2/3 innings pitched and 29 starts in 2019.

  • The Yankees port-sider clocked an 11.1 strikeouts per nine rate last season.
  • Paxton struggled on the road in 2019 (.814 OPS allowed). But that figure rolled in alongside a .351 batting average on balls in play, and the big lefty has otherwise been a solid road hurler over his career.

Strasburg: 18-6 with a 3.32 ERA over 209 innings and 33 starts in 2019

  • The 6-foot-5 right-hander changed some mechanics and sequencing a year ago. Results were impressive, with an increased ground ball percentage and a lower walk rate. Strasburg logged a 2.96 ERA in the season’s second half.
  • Strasburg does a tremendous job of limiting barreled-up contact. That will be a big key against the big bats in the Yankees lineup.
  • One key matchup: Strasburg vs. OF Giancarlo Stanton, who homered in Thursday’s opener. Stanton owns a robust 1.044 OPS against the Washington hurler.

Moneyline (ML)

New York (-128) took Thursday’s opener, 4-1, in a rain-shortened affair. This line feels like an overreaction to the Soto’s absence and an overreach on Paxton. TAKE WASHINGTON (+115).

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Nationals returns $11.50.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

WASHINGTON +1.5 (-143) is a play with less value than the straight moneyline, and this contest has a lower-scoring lean to it. Skip this play.

Over/Under (O/U)

Pitchers have appeared to be ahead of hitters in the early going. TAKE THE UNDER 9.0 (-110) here.
