Four-star edge rusher Nate Marshall flips from Auburn to Michigan

Marshall has flipped back to Michigan after flipping to the Tigers in August

The Auburn Tigers have lost a major piece to a recruiting class they hope finishes among the top 5 in the country once National Signing Day ends in less than 24 hours. Four-star edge rusher Nathaniel Marshall, who committed to join the Tigers back in August of 2024, flipped to Michigan on Tuesday.

Standing at 6-foot-4, and weighing in at 265 pounds, Marshall is one of the premier pass rushing prospects in the 2025 cycle. He was originally committed to join the Wolverines in April of 2024 before flipping to Auburn in August after an official visit to the Plains over the summer.

The Oak Park, IL native is highly unlikely to change his decision again before he puts pen to paper during Wednesday’s National Signing Day window. The No. 3 prospect from the state of Illinois is now all-but certain to play his college football in BIG 10 country.

Marshall won his respective league’s Defensive Player of the Year award in 2023 Marshall after a fantastic season in which he registered 38 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, six sacks, 13 quarterback hits,  and 4 forced fumbles. The elite pass rusher helped Fenwick High School earn an 8-3 record in 2024, leading to the No. 12 ranking in the state of Illinois.

While Auburn’s 2025 class is still ranked among the top 5 in the country heading into tomorrow’s National Signing Day, Marshall’s de-commitment from the Tigers continues an alarming trend of flips, specifically on the defensive side of the ball, that Hugh Freeze and his staff will want to end.

Five-star DL Justus Terry set to take official visit to Auburn

Auburn will make one final push this weekend to land one of the nation’s top defensive linemen in the 2025 cycle.

Auburn football will host Texas A&M on Saturday for what will be a critical game for a postseason bid. It will also be a crucial weekend for recruiting as one of the nation’s top defensive linemen will be on campus to take his official visit.

[autotag]Justus Terry[/autotag], a five-star defensive lineman from Manchester, Georgia, will take his official visit to Auburn as the beginning of the early signing period inches closer.

Terry’s recruitment has been a whirlwind to this point. He committed to his home state program, Georgia, in January 2023 before backing off in favor of flipping to USC in March. However, his commitment to the Trojans lasted three months as he announced his de-commitment from Lincoln Riley’s program on June 19.

Since then, Terry has officially visited Texas and Alabama according to 247Sports, with Auburn next on his docket. Before de-committing from USC, Terry took official visits to Florida State and Georgia.

Auburn wants to add to its impressive defensive line haul for 2025. The Tigers have already landed the commitments of four-star linemen [autotag]Nathaniel Marshall[/autotag], [autotag]Malik Autry[/autotag], [autotag]Antonio Coleman[/autotag], and [autotag]Jourdin Crawford[/autotag], and landing Terry would be the icing on the cake.

However, Auburn coaches must put on a near-perfect performance to sway Terry to the Plains. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Georgia a 95.8% chance to win back Terry’s commitment, while five 247Sports writers have logged “crystal ball predictions” for Georgia to land Terry.

Terry is a 6-4 275-pound defensive lineman who has earned five-star status from every major recruiting outlet. He is the nation’s No. 2 defensive lineman and ranks as high as the No. 2 overall recruit from Georgia for the 2025 cycle according to Rivals and 247Sports.

Auburn commit Nathaniel Marshall receives top-30 ranking from Rivals

The 6-5 EDGE rusher committed to the Tigers back in August of this year

Auburn five-star defensive line commit [autotag]Nathaniel Marshall[/autotag] has quietly jumped up the recruitment rankings throughout the fall. That trend continued on Monday, as Rivals listed the Oak Park, Illinois native as the No. 26 ranked five-star recruit in the entire 2025 cycle.

A 6-foot-5 edge rusher, Marshall committed to the Tigers in August of this year. The talented defensive superstar won Conference Defensive Player of the Year during his junior season with Fenwick High School in 2023, tallying 38 tackles, six sacks, four forced fumbles, and four blocked kicks. He is currently the third highest-ranked recruit in Auburn’s top 5 class according to On3 Sports, trailing just five-star quarterback [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag] and five-star edge rusher [autotag]Jared Smith[/autotag] for the top spot.

All three prospects should see ample playing time next fall, with Marshall and Smith joining sophomore stand-out Keldric Faulk to create one of the better defensive lines in the entire SEC. It’s quite possible all three talented pass rushers could co-exist on the same line. National recruiting analyst Allen Trieu explained how Marshall can “change directions and chase down plays..shift[ing] from outside to inside…up and down the line.”

That pure talent and ability to play every position along the defensive line should give Marshall plenty of opportunity to make an impact next season with the Tigers. Until then, Marshall will continue pushing for a State Championship with 8-3 Fenwick High School.

What Michigan football commit Nate Marshall brings to the table

Heckuva get for Sherrone Moore & co. #GoBlue

What a start to the recruiting career of Lou Esposito, huh? This is Esposito’s first cycle at a Power Five (or Power Four?) school, and he hit the ground with Usain Bolt speed. Esposito hosted Nathaniel Marshall for a Spring Game visit last weekend with little expectation of a commitment but managed to get Marshall into the class within one business day of his visit. Great stuff from a member of the new defensive staff. Sherrone Moore deserves credit here as well, but it’s especially impressive that Esposito got the ball rolling this fast.

Now, onto how Marshall fits into the team.

Firstly, Marshall is a huge land. There is no way around it. The kid holds a .9785 grade from the 247Sports Composite and is the 35th player nationally, hovering just outside of the five-star range. Assuming his grade stays the same, Marshall would be the highest Michigan commit since Will Johnson in 2022.

On defense, Marshall plays mostly on the inside of the defensive line but will likely be a defensive end at Michigan. He is listed at 6-foot-4, 265 pounds, and can probably add a little more weight in college. At first glance, I would expect him to take over Derrick Moore’s role in the defense as a thicker edge defender who occasionally slides down inside in certain fronts.

The only thing that gives me pause with Marshall is his lack of experience playing on the edge. He takes almost all of his snaps lined up in a three-point stance on the inside of Fenwick’s defensive line, so there will be a learning curve once he gets to campus. The potential to be a dangerous pass rusher is clearly there, though. When he is isolated with an offensive lineman he is able to bowl past the blocker and blow up plays, he’s got a motor that allows him to get cleanup sacks, and has the athleticism to string out runs from the inside. Marshall is definitely a prospect worth getting excited about, even if there is some development to be desired.

As you expect from most top prospects, Marshall plays on both offense and special teams as well as defense. His tight end highlights are what you would expect with his frame and athleticism, but the more impressive thing is his ability to block kicks and punts. There aren’t many defensive linemen nationally who have the burst and coordination to get their hands on the ball, but Williams can do it frequently. There’s likely a role for him in that sense at Michigan, but it really goes to show exactly how athletic and talented Marshall is.

The first step for Marshall once he gets on campus is obviously to start the transition to being an outside defender. That means upgrading his pass rusher arsenal, understanding how to set an edge, and making sure that he can bend around tackle when rushing the passer. All of these things are very achievable, especially with his tools, but it might take a year or two before he is able to see the field meaningfully in Ann Arbor.

Michigan football makes top group for elite 2025 defensive tackle

A step in the right direction with a future five-star. #GoBlue

Michigan football hit the motherlode in 2022 when it managed to land the defensive tackle duo of Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant. But neither was particularly highly rated as recruits.

The Wolverines came close to landing some top-flight talent in 2024, but many of those defense tackles evaded them. Such was the case for Justin Scott, the Chicago-based five-star who appeared Ann Arbor-bound before surprising by committing to rival Ohio State. That pledge didn’t last as Scott flipped to Miami (Fla.), but the maize and blue are still looking to get high-end talent at the position moving forward.

Another Chicago talent is on the radar and apparently the Wolverines are on his. 2025 Oak Park (Ill.) Fenwick four-star Nathaniel Marshall released his top 12 on Monday and Michigan football made the cut.

There is hefty competition for his services, however. Aside from Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Miami, Penn State, Florida, USC, Auburn, Tennessee, Oregon, and Illinois are also among his list of contenders.

Marshall is currently a four-star but he’s in five-star range, ranked No. 30 overall by the 247Sports Composite, if he remains in that spot, he will be a five-star upon the next re-rank.

There are currently no predictions as to where Marshall will end up, collegiately.
