Press Taylor: Jaguars have ‘high hopes’ for backup QB Nathan Rourke

Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor says former CFL star Nathan Rourke has done a “great job” so far in camp.

Former Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke probably won’t be starting games for the Jacksonville Jaguars any time soon, but offensive coordinator Press Taylor isn’t discounting the quarterback’s potential impact.

“He’s done a great job, just in terms of growing from the spring, through the summer, into now at training camp,” Taylor said of Rourke on Monday. “He’s done a great job in that [quarterback] room with those guys, and he’s somebody that’s going to get a lot of opportunities as well coming up in these preseason games, that we have high hopes for leading our offense.”

Rourke, 25, previously spent two seasons with the CFL’s B.C. Lions and earned the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian award after completing 78.7 percent of his passes in 2022 for 3,349 yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

After working out for at least a dozen NFL teams in December and January, Rourke opted to sign with the Jaguars.

To earn a place on the team’s 53-man roster this fall, Rourke will likely have to beat out former San Francisco 49ers starter C.J. Beathard for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Catching up to a seventh-year veteran entering his second season in the Jaguars’ offensive system could be a challenge, though.

“He’s done a good job,” Taylor said of Rourke. “The big thing with those guys is understanding what we’re trying to do on each play, where to go to with the ball and playing on time. Throughout this training camp, we’re really evaluating the quarterback’s process, not as concerned with what the stats may look like and this and that, because again, we’re not scheming our defense.

“We want them to understand the process within each play and how we get through our progressions, when we may throw a ball to a certain guy in certain times.”

The first of Jacksonville’s three preseason games is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. ET against the Dallas Cowboys.

Jaguars 2023 roster review: QB Nathan Rourke

CFL’s reigning Most Outstanding Canadian joined the Jaguars in January to compete for backup quarterback duties.

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is still off on the horizon. Join us in the NFL’s dead zone with a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

There was no shortage of interest when Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke made a tour of NFL teams in 2022. After reportedly visiting a dozen teams, CFL’s reigning Most Outstanding Canadian opted to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A starting job is out of the question for Rourke with Trevor Lawrence ahead of him on the depth chart. Earning the second spot will probably be difficult too with C.J. Beathard brought back earlier this offseason.

Still, Rourke is an intriguing addition to the Jaguars roster who has a chance to be the team’s backup for the foreseeable future.

Contract (2023): $750,000 base salary, $1,666 prorated signing bonus, $751,666 cap hit.

Acquired: Jaguars signed Rourke to a contract on Jan. 16, 2023.

PFF grades: N/A

Statistics:

  • 3,349 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, 10 interceptions (2022 – BC Lions)

Quote: “It’s been pretty surreal to be honest. It’s one of those things where you kind of have to pinch yourself and it kind of has to sink in still for me, just with where I’m at, who my teammates are, and just kind of the scale of things.” – Rourke

Ranking the QBs in the AFC South entering 2023

Taking a look at ranking the QBs in the AFC South entering 2023.

The quarterback position in the AFC South has been less than desirable since Andrew Luck’s retirement, Deshaun Watson’s fallout with the Houston Texans, and Trevor Lawrence’s disastrous rookie season under Urban Meyer.

For now, the future is bright for the division’s quarterbacks entering the 2023 season. Lawrence is coming off a strong Year 2 for the Jacksonville Jaguars while the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, and Tennessee Titans are hoping they have found their long-term franchise quarterback coming out of this year’s NFL draft.

This will be the first season we could see all 32 teams carry three quarterbacks on their rosters due to the new third QB rule the league has implemented because of what happened to the San Francisco 49ers in last year’s playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Let’s take a look at how the AFC South quarterbacks rank heading into the upcoming season:

Jersey numbers revealed for newly signed Jaguars players

The Jaguars have revealed what numbers the team’s newly added free agents will wear in 2023.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t make much of a splash in free agency, but the team did add a few players ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Now the team has revealed what numbers those recently signed veterans will wear when they put on teal jerseys for the first time. Earlier in April, the Jaguars announced wide receiver Calvin Ridley — who was acquired during the 2022 season, but was ineligible to play due to a suspension — will wear the newly allowed No. 0 jersey.

Nathan Rourke, a former Canadian Football League quarterback who signed with the Jaguars in January, will be the first quarterback in team history to wear the No. 18 jersey. Only wide receivers previously donned the number, including Matt Jones, Chris Conley, and Ace Sanders.

Running back D’Ernest Johnson will inherit the No. 25 jersey that was left available after its previous owner, James Robinson, was traded to the New York Jets.

Offensive tackle Josh Wells wore No. 72 during his first stint with the Jaguars, but that number now belongs to presumed starting right tackle Walker Little.

Watch: Trevor Lawrence’s first throwing session with Calvin Ridley

Trevor Lawrence, Calvin Ridley, Evan Engram, Jamal Agnew, and co. are already putting in work ahead of the 2023 season.

The 2023 NFL season is still five months away, but the Jacksonville Jaguars are wasting no time getting the preparation started.

A day after Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence revealed that he’d already had a throwing session with his new wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, video of that workout was released Wednesday night.

The video, via NFL photographer Aaron Berkshire, also features Jaguars tight ends Evan Engram and Luke Farrell, as well as receivers Jamal Agnew, Tim Jones, and Kevin Austin Jr.

It also appears as though newly signed backup quarterback Nathan Rourke got in a few throws.

At the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reported that Jaguars coach Doug Pederson anticipated Lawrence linking up with Ridley on his own time in the offseason. Evidently, it didn’t take long for the 23-year-old quarterback to round up several of his playmakers.

The Jaguars’ offseason program officially begins on April 17 with organized team activities (OTAs) starting on May 22.

Jaguars waive QB E.J. Perry after year on practice squad

The Jaguars parted with quarterback E.J. Perry, who signed with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2022.

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived quarterback E.J. Perry on Tuesday, a little over a month after keeping him with a reserve/future contract in January.

Perry, 24, was a two-time All-Ivy League selection at Brown and joined the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft. Perry was cut by the team at the end of August and was added to the practice squad where he spent the entire 2022 season.

In February, the Jaguars re-signed backup quarterback C.J. Beathard and the team added to its depth chart in January by adding former Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke. While the latter is recovering from a minor foot surgery, Jacksonville evidently feels good enough about its trio of passers to part with Perry.

In the 2022 preseason, Perry completed 25 of his 48 passes for 293 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. In two seasons as the starting quarterback at Brown, Perry had 45 touchdowns with 27 interceptions.

Jaguars QB C.J. Beathard’s new contract details, value revealed

C.J. Beathard new deal includes $1 million in incentives in each of the next two seasons.

The Jacksonville Jaguars don’t have much (or any right now) cap space to work with, but decided that keeping backup quarterback C.J. Beathard was a priority anyway.

On Friday, the team announced that it kept Beathard with a new contract, less than three weeks before the veteran quarterback was set to become a free agent.

According to the contract details reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the deal is more than affordable for the Jaguars.

The deal is only slightly less than the two-year, $5 million contract Beathard signed with the Jaguars during the 2021 offseason.

While the exact cap hit won’t be revealed until there’s a better idea of the displacement of the money over the next two seasons, the contract will be a minimal burden for the Jaguars, regardless.

There’s also a chance that Beathard won’t be on the roster in the fall, as the team recently added Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke to compete for a backup role behind Trevor Lawrence.

In two seasons with the Jaguars, Beathard has only appeared a few times in clean up duty. He’s thrown just 13 passes with the Jaguars after previously starting 12 games in four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

Jaguars re-sign backup quarterback C.J. Beathard

The Jaguars’ backup quarterback and ping-pong king is staying in Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed C.J. Beathard on Friday, less than three weeks before he was set to become a free agent. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, it’s a two-year extension for the Jaguars backup quarterback.

Beathard, 29, began his career with the San Francisco 49ers as a third-round draft pick and started 12 games over four seasons with the team. The Jaguars signed Beathard in March 2021, one month before selecting Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

In his two seasons with the Jaguars, Beathard has never started a game and has only thrown 13 total passes.

While Beathard didn’t contribute much on the field, he is unanimously considered to be the toughest to beat on the locker room ping-pong table.

The return of Beathard in 2023 sets up a battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Lawrence. In January, the Jaguars signed Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke after the former BC Lions quarterback reportedly made a tour of 12 interested NFL teams.

Jacksonville also had undrafted free agent E.J. Perry on the practice squad all season and kept him with a futures contract.

Jaguars’ newly signed QB Nathan Rourke undergoes foot surgery

Nathan Rourke had a plate and screws surgically removed from his foot Monday.

Former Canadian Football League star and newly signed Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nathan Rourke underwent surgery Monday to have a plate and screws removed from his foot, according to TSN’s Farhan Lalji.

Rourke, 24, is a Victoria, Canada native, but played collegiately for the Ohio Bobcats. After trying out at wide receiver for the New York Giants, Rourke joined the CFL’s BC Lions. During the 2022 season, Rourke was one of the most prolific passers in the CFL, finishing the year with a 78.7 completion percentage and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

After a lengthy tour of interested NFL teams that reportedly included 12 stops, Rourke chose to join the Jaguars.

“There were teams that made some offers, but ultimately, the situation and the prospect of helping the team out and being able to compete for a number two job was best in Jacksonville,” Rourke told 3DownNation earlier in January. “Ultimately, we made the decision that we did because the goal is to be an NFL quarterback and an NFL starter, I think this is a good first step in that direction.”

In his first season in the CFL, Rourke suffered a Lisfranc injury that required surgery to repair. The rehab of his latest injury will reportedly be handled by the Jaguars medical staff and Rourke plans to move to Jacksonville next month.

CFL QB Nathan Rourke, who tried out for Broncos in December, signs with Jaguars

CFL QB Nathan Rourke, who tried out for the Broncos and 11 other teams this winter, plans to sign with the Jaguars.

Nathan Rourke is jumping from the CFL to the NFL, but not with the Denver Broncos.

Rourke (6-1, 210 pounds) tried out for the Broncos last month, but he has chosen to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars instead, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. After an impressive season in Canada last spring, Rourke tried out for a dozen NFL teams during the 2022 season.

Rourke scored 32 touchdowns (25 passing and seven rushing) in ten games with the BC Lions in 2022.

Rourke is one of three quarterbacks who tried out for Denver last month, joining Jarrett Guarantano (who signed to the practice squad) and veteran Joshua Dobbs. Guarantano was promoted to the active roster late in the season and he is scheduled to become an exclusive rights free agent in March.

If the Broncos place an ERFA tender on Guarantano, he will become the team’s second QB under contract for 2023, joining Russell Wilson. Denver’s backup, Brett Rypien, is set to become an unrestricted free agent this spring. Backup QB will be a position of need for the Broncos this offseason.
