It’s now Nathan Peterman vs. the Jets.

In a wild twist, the Bears are now down to their third-string quarterback. The Jets will now be facing Nathan Peterman instead of Trevor Siemian.

Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Siemian injured his oblique in warmups today so it will be Peterman, who was just called up from the practice squad Saturday as insurance for Justin Fields. As it turns out, the Bears needed to cash in that policy. It also means Peterman is now the only healthy quarterback for the Bears.

Running back David Montgomery is the emergency quarterback for Chicago. Siemian will still be the No. 2 quarterback since he is already active. Justin Fields is inactive.

The Jets are 7-point favorites, per Tipico Sportsbook. The over/under is 37.5. You have to wonder how ugly the day is going to be for the Bears now with Peterman against the Jets defense and with Chicago missing two starters — Jaquan Brisker and Kyler Gordon — in the secondary.

Update: The Bears are now saying it is a game-time decision as to who the quarterback will be, as we are mere minutes away from kickoff.

Nathan Peterman starting at quarterback for Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears will start third-string QB Nathan Peterman against the Jets

The Chicago Bears’ quarterback situation for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets has gone from bad to worse, or worst.

Trevor Siemian was expected to start in place of the injured Justin Fields.

However, the backup injured an oblique in warmups and now Chicago is reduced to starting Nathan Peterman against the Jets.

Chicago might be better off just going with its emergence quarterback, running back David Montgomery.

A Wildcat offense would seem to be a better option than Peterman.

Bears third-string QB Nathan Peterman could start vs. Jets

With Justin Fields inactive and Trevor Siemian suffering an oblique injury during warmups, it’s Nathan Peterman time for the Bears.

UPDATE: After announcing Nathan Peterman will start against the Jets, the Bears now say that the starting QB is a game-time decision. Backup Trevor Siemian got the starting nod.

It’s been quite the quarterback carousel for the Bears ahead of Sunday’s game against the Jets. With Justin Fields inactive with a left shoulder injury, it’ll be Nathan Peterman, not Trevor Siemian, who will get the start.

Siemian suffered an oblique injury during warmups, which means it’s Peterman time for Chicago. Siemian will serve as Peterman’s backup in the game. In case you were wondering, running back David Montgomery is the emergency quarterback.

Fields suffered a separated left shoulder in last week’s loss to the Falcons, which put his status in question. Fields was limited in practice this week before being ruled as a game-time decision. Ultimately, the Bears opted to rest Fields and not further injury.

The Bears and Jets kick things off at Noon CT on FOX.

Bears elevating QB Nathan Peterman to the active roster

With Justin Fields questionable, the Bears are elevating Nathan Peterman from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

The Chicago Bears haven’t made a decision on whether or not Justin Fields starts on Sunday against the New York Jets, but their latest roster move might be a strong indication of which way they’re leaning. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports the team is elevating quarterback Nathan Peterman from the practice squad to the active roster, hinting that Fields could be made inactive for the game and Trevor Siemian will start.

Peterman was signed by the Bears this offseason as their third-string quarterback. He played in every preseason game, going 14-of-24 for 178 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. Peterman was drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills and has had a rocky career, primarily playing as a backup with the Bills and the Las Vegas Raiders. He will likely back up Siemian, who appears on track to make his first start of the season. Fields is officially questionable with a left shoulder injury.

The Bears will announce their inactive players 90 minutes before gametime but this roster move is a strong indication that Fields won’t be playing on Sunday.

WATCH: Bears offense opens first half with Darrynton Evans touchdown

Darrynton Evans scored a touchdown early in the second half to build the Bears lead over the Seahawks.

The Chicago Bears dominated the Seattle Seahawks in the first half of their preseason matchup and the second half is proving to be more of the same. The Bears, led by third-string quarterback Nathan Peterman, scored on their opening series of the half thanks to a one-yard dive by running back Darrynton Evans.

Evans had an easy go of it after an impressive few plays led the Bears down to the goal line. Peterman found receivers Dazz Newsome and Isaiah Coulter for big gains with an already short field. A pass to Jake Tonges set the Bears up at the one-yard line and Evans did the rest.

With rookie running back Trestan Ebner questionable to return with an ankle injury, Evans will see the bulk of the carries the rest of the way. The Bears lead Seattle 24-0 midway through the third quarter.

Who’s stock is rising and falling after Week 2 of Bears training camp?

Here are a few players we see rising and falling at this point during Bears training camp.

Tuesday marked two full weeks of training camp for the Chicago Bears and there’s been no shortage of activity, both on and off the field.

Pads have been on for over a week now and players are jockeying for starting positions or even roster spots as the first preseason game draws closer and closer.

Training camp performances will ebb and flow, with certain players standing out while others may be struggling for one reason or another. Here are a few players we see rising and falling at this point during camp.

Bears 2022 training camp preview: Quarterbacks

We’re taking a look at the Bears quarterbacks ahead of training camp and examining the biggest question facing the position group.

Chicago Bears training camp is less than a month away, which means it’s time to start looking ahead at the roster the team is bringing to Lake Forest.

It starts at the most important position: Quarterback, where quarterback Justin Fields has been the focal point this offseason. Aside from Fields, there were some big changes in the quarterback room, where Andy Dalton and Nick Foles are out and Trevor Siemian and Nathan Peterman are in.

This new regime under general manager Ryan Poles has been criticized for its handling of Fields this offseason, especially when it comes to the lack of unproven weapons and the state of the offensive line. But they also brought in new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy to put Fields in a position to succeed.

Let’s take a look at the quarterbacks heading into training camp:

The Bears signed Nathan Peterman and NFL fans had the same jokes

Oh, so, THIS is how the Bears want to help Justin Fields, huh?

In a world that includes Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson, there has to be something that balances out the Revolutionary Quarterback Era. Something that lets football lovers everywhere know that, actually, most quarterbacks can’t launch 60-yard darts downfield with minimal effort while a defender bears down on them.

It can’t be a great defense, because that’s already the natural foil to an excellent quarterback. Toss that idea into the trash. Hmm. This is a tough one. Give me a moment to think. What — or who — is the anti-Mahomes?

Oh, no. What’s that coming from Chicago?? Is that Nathan Peterman’s music???

It sure is. On Wednesday, the Bears signed the much-maligned journeyman backup quarterback. And presumably, they have to know Peterman’s history. Right?

Peterman is most famous, of course, for having one of the worst statistical games in NFL history. If this is how the Bears plan to continue developing Justin Fields, I have to say: It’s very bold to give him a direct model of how NOT to play quarterback.

Note: The Bears are currently +9000 to win Super Bowl 57 with oddsmakers at Tipico Sportsbook. Call it a hunch, but I don’t think Peterman makes that any better.

NFL fans were absolutely delighted about the Peterman-to-Chicago news. So much so, that they kept making the same evergreen jokes.

Twitter reacts to Bears signing QB Nathan Peterman

Given the Bears’ history of terrible QB play, Chicago signing Nathan Peterman feels kind of fitting. See how fans are reacting to the move.

The Chicago Bears certainly made a splash on an ordinary Wednesday afternoon with the signing of veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman to a one-year deal.

Peterman, who many believe to be one of the worst quarterbacks of all-time, has spent the last four seasons between the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders in a reserve role. But when he has had opportunities to play, he’s posted some dreadful numbers.

While this signing has fans from across the NFL roasting the Bears, Peterman’s addition to the roster in a QB3 role is to get another body into the building heading into training camp. Second-year quarterback Justin Fields will start for Chicago while free-agent addition Trevor Siemian will back him up.

Given the Bears’ history of terrible quarterback play, the Peterman addition is oddly and painfully fitting. But rest assured, it won’t factor into plans for the regular season.

Here’s how Twitter is roasting reacting to news of Peterman’s signing:

Bears are signing QB Nathan Peterman to 1-year deal

While quarterback is far from a concern in Chicago, the Bears are signing free agent Nathan Peterman to a one-year deal.

While quarterback is far from a concern in Chicago, the Bears are signing free agent quarterback Nathan Peterman to a one-year deal, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Peterman spent his first two seasons with the Bills from 2017-18, where he made four starts. He opened the 2018 season as Buffalo’s starting quarterback   before being replaced by first-round rookie Josh Allen, after Peterman posted a 0.0 quarterback rating. He was released in November.

Peterman spent the last few years with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he’s served as a backup to Derek Carr. He appeared in two games between 2020-21, completing 3-of-5 passes for 60 yards. He briefly relieved Carr against the Bears last season, where he had two rushes for two yards.

Peterman, a former fifth-round pick by the Bills, joins quarterbacks Justin Fields, Trevor Siemian and Ryan Willis in Chicago. The Bears recently released veteran Nick Foles after failing to find a trade partner.

Fields will serve as the starter while Siemian backs him up. Peterman appears to be QB3 heading into the remainder of the offseason.
