Every Texas A&M Aggie selected in the 2023 MLB Draft

Texas A&M is the only school in the nation to have three or more players picked in every MLB Draft since 2001, marking an unmatched 22-year streak.

The 2023 MLB Draft is officially in the books, and there was no shortage of Texas A&M prospects hearing their names called over the course of the three-day event.

While no one from the Maroon and White heard their name called on Day 1, the Aggies more than made up for it with six total selections across Days 2 and 3. In the aftermath, Texas A&M has had at least two players selected in every draft since 1984, which is the longest streak in the country. The Aggies also boast the achievement of being the only school in the nation to have three or more players picked in every MLB Draft since 2001.

That 22-year streak is three years longer than the next-closest active run, which is 19 years by the Vanderbilt Commodores.

There is plenty to be excited about at the moment if you’re an Aggie baseball fan, from the home run hiring of Max Weiner as Texas A&M’s new pitching coach to the trio of Aggie signees that withdrew their name from the MLB Draft, thus joining the program in 2024. And while the departures of the six Aggies who heard their names called is bittersweet, it’s rewarding to know they will represent the Maroon and White to the fullest at the next level.

Here is the rundown of every Aggie that was selected in the 2023 MLB Draft. Congratulations to all, and of course, BTHO the majors!

Three Texas A&M Aggies selected in the 2023 MLB Draft

Not one, not two, but three Texas A&M Aggies heard their names called Tuesday afternoon during the 2023 MLB Draft!

Not one, not two, but three former Texas A&M Aggies are officially turning professional as they make the next stop of their baseball careers.

Shortstop Hunter Haas, RHP Nathan Dettmer, and third baseman Trevor Werner all heard their names called in the 2023 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon. Haas was the first Aggie off the board, going No. 120 to the Tampa Bay Rays. Dettmer was taken No. 139 by the Oakland Athletics, and Werner rounded out the three after being taken No. 199 by the Kansas City Royals.

After beginning his collegiate career at Arizona State for two seasons, Haas transferred to A&M and made his impact felt on the diamond. He lead the team in walks (49) while ranked second in batting average (.323), on-base percentage (.447),, and OPS (.953), while also logging 10 homers.

Dettmer spent three seasons in College Station, logging 53 appearances with 48 starts, a 5.27 ERA, a 10-9 record as a starter, and 196 strikeouts with 94 walks.

In four seasons with Texas A&M, Werner appeared in 125 games to go alongside 111 starts. As an Aggie, he boasts a career .251 batting average, a .348 on-base percentage, and a .459 slugging percentage to go with 21 home runs, and 97 RBIs.

Congratulations to all three on this special moment! We know you’ll continue to represent the Maroon and White proud, and as always, Gig ’em and BTHO the majors!

Projecting where Aggie prospects could land in the 2023 MLB Draft

Ahead of the 2023 MLB Draft, which begins Sunday night, Texas A&M has no shortage of prospects who could hear their names called.

The 2023 MLB Draft kicks off on Sunday, July 9, and carries through Tuesday, July 11, in Seattle. This marks the second straight year that the event has coincided with the MLB All-Star Game, and it could also feature a handful of Texas A&M prospects.

Ahead of the start of Round 1 of the draft, which opens at 5 p.m. CT on Sunday, Texas A&M will have no shortage of potential prospects who could, realistically, hear their names called. Granted, the top of the draft is arguably reserved for the likes of LSU‘s Paul Skenes, Dylan Crews, and Florida‘s Wyatt Langford, who are all expected to be off the board in the top five. But once it’s all said and done, a handful of Aggies could be making their way to the big leagues next year.

Outfielders Brett Minnich and Jordan Thompson, relievers Matt Dillard (LHP) and Carson Lambert (RHP), and second baseman Austin Bost all saw their college eligibility come to a close and will look to make the jump to the majors.

Additionally, LHPs Evan Aschenbeck, Will Johnston, Brandyn Garcia, RHP Nathan Dettmer, shortstop Hunter Haas, third baseman Trevor Werner, first baseman Jack Moss, and utility Ryan Targac have a chance to become professional.

Dettmer, Haas, and Moss all made the first stop on that journey after showcasing their skills at the MLB Draft Combine last month in Phoenix.

As shared through GigEm247, here is a look at which former, current, and potentially future A&M players are in the MLB.com Top 250 and ESPN Top 300 prospect rankings. The slot value for each projected pick is included as well.

Three Texas A&M prospects make their debut at the 2023 MLB Draft Combine

For Texas A&M’s Hunter Haas, Jack Moss, and Nathan Dettmer, the road to the draft is ramping up as they make their debut at the 2023 MLB Draft Combine.

While Texas A&M baseball may be heading into its offseason, the work ahead is just ramping up for three Aggie prospects looking to head to the majors.

Infielders Hunter Haas and Jack Moss, as well as RHP Nathan Dettmer, will represent the Maroon and White in the majors as they make the leap to the next level. The first stop on that journey is showcasing their skills at this year’s MLB Draft Combine, which is being held at Chase Field in Phoenix, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

This year’s event marks the third iteration of the draft combine, as the top 300 draft-eligible players, which are identified by MLB teams, descend upon Phoenix in order to take part in a series of medical and performance assessments. Additionally, prospects will have the opportunity to participate in a pro-style showcase workout, as well as strength and performance assessments.

The entire event runs from Tuesday, June 20 to Friday, June 23. On-field scouting workouts will run on the 20th and Wednesday the 21st.

Moss (.355) and Haas (.323) led the Aggies in batting average this season to go alongside a combined 174 hits and 114 runs. Both chipped in for a combined 184 RBIs. Haas had 10 homers on the season while Moss went yard four times.

Dettmer finished with a 6.32 ERA on the season with a 1.65 WHIP and a 1-4 record as a starter. While he managed to log 65 strikeouts, consistency on the mound proved to be an obstacle for the junior, although the same can be said for much of the Aggies’ bullpen as a whole.

Despite some of his struggles this season, Dettmer has proven to rise to the occasion when the stakes are high, so there’s a great probability that he can find his groove as he transitions to the professional level. Haas and Moss have illustrated their ability to drive in runs, so there should be no shortage of MLB clubs looking to add their talents.

The 2023 MLB Draft is planned for July 9-11 during All-Star Week in Seattle, featuring 20 rounds of coverage across the three days. Fans can tune in across ESPN and MLB Network to see where each of the three Aggies land in the majors.

Jim Schlossnagle, Austin Bost, and Nathan Dettmer speak after Texas A&M’s season-ending loss to Stanford (NCAA Regional)

After losing 7-1 to Stanford in the Regional Final, Jim Schlossnagle, Austin Bost, and Nathan Dettmer spoke for a final time this season.

Texas A&M’s 2023 Baseball season ended Monday night after falling to Stanford 7-1 in the Regional Final, destroying any hope of a brief revival of the Lone Star Showdown as the Cardinal will now face the Texas Longhorns in the Super Regional.

The Loss had to be frustrating for junior RHP Nathan Dettmer, who, in his first start in the Tournament, struck out eight batters in six innings, which on any other night would have been more than enough for an Aggie offense that seemed to have found consistency at the plate, freshman outfielder Jace Laviolette’s second-inning home run to take a 1-0 lead was all the Aggies could muster.

Texas A&M’s 2023 season cannot and should not be defined by one loss, especially after winning six of their final eight SEC series, earning a spot in the SEC title game, and advancing to a Super Regional is nothing to scoff at. Going into the offseason, head coach Jim Schlossnagle is tasked with making additions and avoiding subtractions through the transfer portal, especially in the bullpen.

After the game, Jim Schlossnagle, Austin Bost, and Nathan Dettmer spoke for a final time this season to reflect on the loss while Bost’s memorable Aggie career officially ended. Here is what all three had to say.

Notre Dame out of College World Series after loss to Texas A&M

The ride is over.

Even when you do much better than what was expected from you, the end never is easy. Notre Dame stunned the baseball world when it eliminated top-ranked Tennessee in the Super Regional. A win over Texas in their College World Series opener gave people more reason to believe. However, that was as good as it got as the Irish then lost to Oklahoma and now, their season is over after losing an elimination game to Texas A&M, 5-1.

The Irish were undone by a sloppy defensive third inning that led to three Aggies runs, two of which were unearned. That was all the Aggies needed as Nathan Dettmer stymied the Irish’s bats for seven shutout innings while allowing only three hits. The Irish made some noise in the eighth with a leadoff home run by [autotag]Brooks Coetzee[/autotag] and even brought the tying run to the on-deck circle with no outs. But a strikeout and double play ended the only real threat they had all afternoon.

Here are some images from the Irish’s final game of the 2022 season:

Nathan Dettmer honored as SEC pitcher of the Week

Nathan Dettmer is on a roll! @SEC Pitcher of the Week again!

For the second time in the 2022 season, Nathan Dettmer has been recognized by the South Eastern Conference as the conference’s pitcher of the week.

Dettmer pitched 7 innings of one run ball, allowing two hits and striking out six in a 5-1 Aggie win against the 22nd ranked Vanderbilt Commodores last weekend.

It was Dettmer’s third consecutive win against a top-25 ranked team, following victories over the #10 Georgia Bulldogs, and #3 Arkansas Razorbacks, earning the Aggies sophomore two conference pitcher of the week awards in the three week period.

On the season, Dettmer is 5-2 in 11 starts, with a 3.13 ERA and a 1,13 WHIP, and has been a key cog in the Aggie’s climb up the SEC standings and the national polls.

Aggie baseball continues hot streak with series win over Vanderbilt

Aggie baseball continues hot streak with series win over Vanderbilt

The 21st ranked Aggie baseball team traveled to Nashville this weekend for an important three game South Eastern Conference tilt with #22 Vanderbilt.

Nathan Dettmer took the bump for the Aggies on Thursday in his typical game 1 slot, and he continued his dominant streak, tossing 7 innings, of 1 run ball, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 6. Jacob Palisch gave up 3 hits but held the Commadores scoreless in his 2 innings of relief. Offensively Kole Kaler had a first inning solo home run, and the Ags small balled their way to 4 more runs, totaling 7 hits and drawing 7 walks, on their way to a 5-1 series opening win.

In game 2, the Commadores offense went off, scoring 7 runs in the first 4 innings, and didn’t get slow down, as they ran away with an 11-1 win to tie the series.

The Aggies answered with an offensive explosion of their own on Saturday, led by Ryan Targac’s 2 homeruns and 6 total RBI, while Moo Menefee pulled a clutch relief performance, tossing 5.1 innings of 2 hit, 1 run ball, on the way to a 12-4 A&M victory in the rubber match.
