Ravens place one player on IR, another on practice squad injured list

The Ravens placed one player on injured reserve and another on the practice squad injured list on Thursday

The Baltimore Ravens have seen injuries be a key part of their season in 2021. Starting all the way back in training camp, the team has lost countless key contributors for the season due to different injuries, and also has been dealing with players missing weeks and months with other ailments.

On Thursday, the team announced that they had placed offensive lineman Tyre Phillips on injured reserve. It was then made known by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic that the team had also placed running back Nate McCrary on the practice squad/injured list.

Zrebiec noted that placing Phillips on injured reserves ends his season completely, as a player can’t return from injured reserve twice in the same season and play.

Phillips started the season as Baltimore’s starting left guard, but got injured in Week 1 and spent time on injured reserve. He then spent time at right tackle after Patrick Mekari went down and had to miss time with various injuries.

McCrary had a strong preseason with the Ravens in 2021, but was ultimately cut and ended up being claimed off of waivers by the Denver Broncos. He was cut by Denver and brought back by Baltimore on their practice squad, but only played in one game with the team.

Ravens activate three players from Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Ravens activated three players from the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday

The Baltimore Ravens have seen COVID-19 run through their locker room over the last week or so, with 17 players being on the Reserve/COVID-19 list at one point. The absences of the players put even more of a dent in a roster that has seen numerous contributors go down due injuries.

On Friday, the team announced that they had activated three players off of the Reserve/COVID-19 list in safety Chuck Clark, center Trystan Colon, and running back Nate McCrary. All three players will provide a boost simply because they are now healthy.

The Baltimore Ravens have had to deal with player absences for the entirety of the 2021 season so far. Injuries have been the key storyline, but illnesses have also taken their toll on Baltimore’s locker room. That’s been the case again in Week 15, as COVID has made it’s way to the Ravens’ organization.

On Thursday, Baltimore announced that they had placed two more players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list in safety Chuck Clark and running back Nate McCrary. Their additions come two days after center Trystan Colon was added to the list, and three days after wide receiver Binjimen Victor’s placement on it.

If Clark is unable to play in Week 15 against the Green Bay Packers, the Ravens would be without their entire expected starting secondary leading up to the 2021 season, as cornerbacks Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Peters as well as safety DeShon Elliott are all out.

McCrary signed with Baltimore’s practice squad a few weeks ago and was called up for their Week 13 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Baltimore Ravens currently sit at 8-4 and stand alone atop of the AFC North. They suffered a crushing 20-19 loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13, and will be looking to bounce back in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns.

Ahead of their Week 14 matchup with Cleveland, Baltimore protected four players on their practice squad in quarterback Chris Streveler, Running back Nate McCrary, offensive tackle David Sharpe and inside linebacker Joe Thomas.

Streveler was signed by the Ravens after the Arizona Cardinals signed quarterback Trace McSorley off of Baltimore’s practice squad. McCrary provides running back depth, and was called up in Week 13, accumulating one carry for one yard. Sharpe could be called up with fellow offensive tackle Patrick Mekari currently injured. Thomas can play some special teams snaps, and could be inside linebacker depth in the event that the team feels like they need more of it.

Ravens elevate two practice squad players to active roster for Week 13 game vs. Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens elevated two players from their practice squad to their active roster for their Week 13 matchup with the Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens have gotten contributions from their practice squad throughout the course of the 2021 season so far. With how many injuries they’ve had to go through, Baltimore has had to find ways to make up the production from some of the stars that they’ve been missing.

On Saturday, the Ravens elevated two players from their practice squad in running back Nate McCrary and defensive back Robert Jackson. Both could provide solid depth at their respective positions in Week 13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

McCrary impressed with Baltimore during the 2021 preseason, but was ultimately let go by the team during final cut down day. He was claimed off of waivers by the Denver Broncos, but didn’t last long there before signing with the Ravens’ practice squad. Jackson signed with the Ravens’ practice squad this week after working out with the team.

The Baltimore Ravens have been following the “next man up” mentality for all of the 2021 season, as they’ve had to go through multiple losses on both sides of the ball due to injury. Even so, they’ve put together a 6-2 record and stand on top the AFC North through nine weeks.

On Tuesday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that Baltimore had protected four players on their practice squad ahead of their Week 10 matchup with the Miami Dolphins in running back Nate McCrary, guard James Carpenter, guard/defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie and inside linebacker Joe Thomas.

McCrary could be an option to get elevated to the active roster for Thursday if fellow running back Latavius Murray is unable to play as he continues to nurse an ankle injury. Carpenter could provide interior depth on the offensive line, while McKenzie could take snaps at multiple positions. Thomas could be used as an extra inside linebacker, especially with the absence of Malik Harrison.

The Baltimore Ravens will be taking on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6 of the 2021 season. Both teams are coming off of incredible Week 5 wins, with Baltimore completing a comeback against the Indianapolis Colts while Los Angeles picked up a crazy victory over the Cleveland Browns.

On Thursday, the Ravens protected four players from their practice squad ahead of their Sunday game with the Chargers in running back Nate McCrary, offensive tackle David Sharpe, cornerback Kevon Seymour and safety Jordan Richards.

McCrary signed with the Ravens’ practice squad after being claimed off of waivers by the Denver Broncos during the final cut down process. Sharpe was a practice squad protection last week as well, and could provide some depth in the event that one or both of Ronnie Stanley and Alejandro Villanueva can’t go on Sunday.

Seymour has been elevated from the practice squad before and has been cornerback depth for a team that is thin at the position. Richards was called up from the practice squad last week and is regarded as a core special teams player.

Ravens sign two players to practice squad

The Ravens signed two familiar faces to their practice squad on Tuesday

The Baltimore Ravens have been shuffling their roster due to how many injuries they’ve gone through so far during the first few weeks of the 2021 season. They’ve added plenty of new faces that have contributed in a big way, but there have also been a few familiar ones that have returned to the team.

On Tuesday, Baltimore announced that they signed two players to their practice squad who were with the team during 2021 training camp in running back Nate McCrary and defensive back Jordan Richards. Both were let go during cut down day, but have now found their way back to the Ravens.

McCrary returns to Baltimore after being claimed by the Denver Broncos on waivers after the Ravens released him during final cuts. He was inactive for Denver’s first two games before being cut by the Broncos. He will give Baltimore even more running back depth after they lost J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill to season-ending injuries.

Richards was also let go during final cuts, but re-signed to the Ravens’ practice squad shortly after. However, he was released just a few days after being added back to the practice squad in a corresponding move to Baltimore signing Le’Veon Bell. Richards has spent time with the Ravens since 2019.

More changes likely on the way for Broncos’ practice squad

After parting ways with OLB Pita Taumoepenu, the Broncos have an opening on the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos’ 16-player practice squad seems to be an ever-changing group of players.

Denver made another change over the weekend, parting ways with outside linebacker Pita Taumoepenu on Saturday just a few days after signing him. At the time of this writing, Taumoepenu’s former spot on the practice squad is yet to be filled.

The Broncos would have liked to sign running back Nate McCrary to their practice squad, but he’s opting to return to the Baltimore Ravens instead, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. McCrary spent the first two weeks of the season on Denver’s active roster before being cut last week.

Several practice squad transactions are likely on the way for the Broncos this week as well. In addition to filling the vacant spot, Denver might also promote a wide receiver from the practice squad to the active roster after losing Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler to injuries.

The Broncos have four receivers — Tyrie Cleveland, Seth Williams, De’Mornay Pierson-El and Rico Gafford — on the practice squad. If one of those players is called up to the 53-man roster, Denver would then have a second opening on the practice squad.

The Broncos will host the Ravens, McCrary’s new team, in Week 4.

Broncos cut former Ravens RB Nate McCrary

On Thursday the Broncos cut a solid 2021 preseason contributor of the Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens had many tough decisions to make ahead of 2021 cut down day. They had a plethora of depth at a lot of different positions, and they simply couldn’t keep everyone who they wanted to on their roster.

One of the players who was on the outside looking in was running back Nate McCrary. Baltimore released him before the season-ending injuries to Gus Edwards and Justice Hill, and McCrary was subsequently claimed on waivers by the Denver Broncos. After being inactive for Denver’s first two games, the Broncos cut McCrary on Thursday.

The undrafted rookie free agent put up somewhat impressive numbers for the Ravens in the preseason, rushing the ball 42 times for 163 yards and a rushing touchdown, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. He also caught three passes for 34 yards.

It will be interesting to see if Baltimore will bring McCrary back into the organization. They would likely have to decide between him and running back Le’Veon Bell for a spot on the practice squad, as keeping two rushers on the practice squad along with three on the active roster could cause roster constrains elsewhere. With Bell becoming more and more familiar with the Ravens’ offense by the day, McCrary might not be needed in Baltimore anymore unless another injury arises. However, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Ravens at least considered the possibility of bringing a good preseason contributor for them back to the team in some capacity.
