Seahawks slip to No. 12 in latest USA TODAY NFL power rankings

The Seattle Seahawks have yet to find a way to re-sign DE Jadeveon Clowney to the roster, leading to their drop in the NFL power rankings.

The Seattle Seahawks have been fairly active throughout the first wave of free agency despite the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the nation. While team facilities have been closed and most physicals put on hold, Seattle has found a way to sign a few new faces to the roster and potentially fill a few holes.

However, what the Seahawks have not yet been able to do, is to secure defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to a new contract keeping him in the Emerald City for the long haul.

For this reason, Seattle has slipped from No. 8 to No. 12 in the USA TODAY’s latest NFL power rankings.

“Just about everything broke right for this team in 2019,” USA TODAY’s Nate Davis writes. “Still waiting for word if Clowney’s 2020 decision breaks their way, too.”

If it does, re-signing Clowney for the 2020 NFL season and beyond will have been Seattle’s biggest move of the offseason so far.

USA TODAY grades Seahawks’ free agency ‘incomplete’

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports has given the Seattle Seahawks a free-agency grade of “incomplete” as no deal is done with Jadeveon Clowney.

The first couple of weeks of free agency are in the books despite the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the nation. Teams around the league still found ways to sign players to contract extensions and court new members to the roster.

After the first wave of free agency, Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports has issued his grades for all 32 clubs from A+ to F. The Seahawks, however, received a grade all their own . . .  “I” for incomplete.

“Until the Clowney situation resolves – he’s expressed a desire to remain in the Pacific Northwest – too hard to pin down this grade.” Davis writes. “The trade for Dunbar, additions of TE Greg Olsen and WR Phillip Dorsett, re-signing of DT Jarran Reed and return of LB Bruce Irvin feel ‘B’-worthy in a vacuum. But the Clowney verdict could range this anywhere from A- to C-.”

While the rumors circulate, it’s difficult to come by any real reports of where the two sides stand as far as negotiations are concerned and whether or not there is a true offer on the table.

For now, the incomplete grade is more than fair.

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is USA TODAY’s top available free agent

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is USA TODAY’s top available free agent remaining after the first week of deals.

Some of the top unrestricted free agents are already off the board after the first week of the NFL’s wheeling and dealing, however, one name remains at the top of the list of the bests players yet to come to terms on a new deal – (former) Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney,.

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports ranks Clowney the league’s top available free agent.

“The No. 1 pick of the 2014 draft remains the clear-cut top talent without an employer, ” Davis writes. “According to multiple reports, Clowney, 27, has not received the windfall proposal he’d hoped for … despite an environment where 49ers DL Arik Armstead got a five-year, $85 million deal and his former teammate, DeForest Buckner, reeled in a four-year, $84 million extension after getting traded to the Colts.”

Clowney could very well be considering whether or not to re-sign with Seattle but could also opt to wait things out until club facilities open back up and he’s able to travel safely for physicals and visits.

Until he and his camp make a decision, he’ll stay on top as the best free agent still available.

USA TODAY mock projects defensive tackle to Seahawks in round 1

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports has the Seattle Seahawks selecting defensive tackle Ross Blacklock out of TCU in the first round of the draft.

Now that the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine is all wrapped up, every draft pundit and analyst who covers football in some way, shape or form, is publishing his or her latest mock after seeing the numbers and workouts from last week.

Nearly every mock that has been released since then has the Seahawks selecting a defensive player in the first round and Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports is no different.

Davis has Seattle snagging defensive tackle Ross Blacklockout of TCU with the No. 27 overall pick.

“Good chance he’s a better prospect than former Horned Frogs teammate L.J. Collier, Seattle’s top pick last year,” Davis chimes.

“Regardless, looks like the Seahawks will likely be in dire need of D-line reinforcements.”

With Jadeveon Clowney still unsigned to a new deal that would keep him in the Emerald City, it is not far fetched the Seahawks would be looking to beef up their defensive line, however, things could change drastically following the start of free agency and the new league year.

Jadeveon Clowney is No. 2 in USA TODAY’s list of top 20 free agents

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney lands at No. 2 in USA TODAY Sports’ top free agents heading into the 2020 NFL season.

March is one of the busiest times of the year for NFL teams, marking the start of free agency and the new league year.  Major questions arise for all 32 clubs – which players to keep, and who to let walk and test the open waters?

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports recently took a look at all the soon-to-be free agents and ranked his top 20 unsigned players heading into the 2020 season.

Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney landed at No. 2 on his list.

“Stats have never accurately illustrated his value,” writes Davis. “Clowney had just three sacks in 2019 for the Seahawks and has never exceeded double digits. But he’s an every-down player who’s scheme-diverse and almost always commands a double team.

“He’s expressed a desire to stay in Seattle, but the ‘Hawks could have some hard decisions ahead.”

The Seahawks have also expressed interest in the defensive end staying put in Seattle but the numbers will need to shake out favorably for both sides for an extension to come to fruition.

The start of free agency and the new league year kicks off on March 18.

Seahawks land at No. 8 in USA TODAY’s final NFL power rankings

After an impressive campaign, Nate Davis of USA TODAY lists the Seattle Seahawks at only No. 8 in his final NFL power rankings of the season.

The Seattle Seahawks logged an impressive season, lasting into the divisional round of the playoffs before being bested by the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field to end their year.

Now that the Chiefs have been crowned league champions for their win over the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, it’s time to take a look at the final NFL power rankings to close out 2019.

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports, who often irks Seattle fans with his rankings, deems the Seahawks worthy of only the No. 8 spot.

“Their average margin of victory in 11 wins was 5.6 points, and they collectively outscored their opposition by just seven all season – suggesting HC Pete Carroll got absolute most out of a roster facing significant rebuild in trenches,” writes Davis, who lists the Saints, Vikings, Packers and 49ers ahead of the Seahawks in the NFC.

Power rankings tend to differ across media sites, but it’s tough not to argue Davis’ hit to Seattle is a little below the belt this year.
