Giants sign TE Tanner Hudson, waive OL Chris Owens

The New York Giants have signed TE Tanner Hudson and waived OL Chris Owens following Wednesday workouts.

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves and waiver claims on Wednesday, but more moves are expected to come on Thursday as injuries mount.

Prior to Wednesday’s practice, the team held their latest round of workouts with two players in attendance. They were tight end Tanner Hudson and defensive back Nasir Greer.

Of the two, Hudson took his physical and was signed to a contract. The Giants made the transaction official on Thursday morning.

Hudson, 27, was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted rookie out of Southern Arkansas following the 2018 NFL draft. He remained with the Bucs through the 2020 season before spending last season with the San Francisco 49ers.

In 22 career games (one start), Hudson has caught five passes for 67 yards. He earned a 60.0 Pro Football Focus grade in 2020.

Greer signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted rookie free agent back in April and was released this past Tuesday as a part of league-wide cuts.

In order to make room for Hudson on their roster, the Giants waived offensive lineman Chris Owens.

Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Wake Forest S Nasir Greer

Our UDFA spotlight continues with a look at Wake Forest S Nasir Greer and his fit with the #Chiefs:

A three-star cornerback prospect out of Stockbridge, Georgia, Greer had offers from nearly a dozen different schools. He opted to commit to Wake Forest in June of 2017 and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact on the football team.

In 2018, Greer led all true freshmen for the Demon Deacons in tackles. He boasted versatility with the ability to play both cornerback and safety. During his sophomore season in 2019, Greer became a starter on defense, finishing third in the ACC in forced fumbles. His 2020 season was ended prematurely by an ACL injury. When he returned to the field in 2021, he never seemed to be fully healthy.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to host a variety of draft-eligible prospects on top-30 visits. They’re working to get as much information as possible in order to make the best possible decisions in the draft and undrafted free agency.

To kick off the next week, the Chiefs will have Wake Forest S Nasir Greer in the building according to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson. Greer will be in Kansas City for a visit on Monday per Wilson’s report. His trip to 1 Arrowhead Drive will mark the seventh known top-30 visit for the Chiefs.

To kick off his career with the Demon Deacons in 2018, Greer led all true freshmen on the team in tackles. By his sophomore season, he was a starter on defense, but injuries would derail what was a once-promising college career. An ACL injury ended his 2020 season prematurely and when he returned to the field in 2021, he never seemed to be fully healthy.

During the course of his career, the 6-foot and 205-pound Greer played mainly safety but some snaps at cornerback as well. He recorded 141 total tackles, two tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, three interceptions and nine passes defended. He returned an interception for a touchdown as a freshman and he had a penchant for some big hits when playing downhill during his career.

The Chiefs are likely bringing in Greer to get him with Rick Burkholder and the training staff to check out his medicals. With four picks in the seventh round of the draft, Kansas City is sparing no expense when it comes to looking into potential late-round contributors. At the height of his college career, Greer looked like he was on his way to becoming an elite defender. If the team gets the sense that he can regain that form in the NFL, he could turn out to be a steal for a team like the Chiefs.
