Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Nashville Predators and the Tampa Bay Lightning open the 2023-24 National Hockey League regular season Tuesday at Amalie Arena in Tampa. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPN/ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Predators vs. Lightning odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Predators figure to be a little more higher scoring under new coach Andrew Brunette, as opposed to previous regimes which had a more defensive-first approach. The team added C Ryan O’Reilly in the offseason, as well as D Luke Schenn.

The Lightning will be without G Andrei Vasilevskiy until perhaps around Thanksgiving (in the U.S., not Canada). He is recovering from back surgery, so Tampa Bay will have a different look in the 1st 6-8 weeks of the season.

Tampa Bay swept the regular-season series in 2022-23, and it has won 4 straight meetings in the series, all as a favorite, although it is just 2-2 on the puck line in that span. The Over-Under has alternated in the past 6 meetings. The Over is 3-1 in the past 4 battles in Tampa.

Predators at Lightning projected goalies

Juuse Saros (33-23-7, 2.69 GAA, .919 SV%, 2 SO – 2022-23) vs. Jonas Johansson (2-0-0, 2.10 GAA, .932 SV% – 2022-23 w/Avalanche)

Saros faced the Lightning in both regular-season meetings in 2022-23, going 0-1-1 with a 3.99 GAA and .889 SV% in the 2 starts, and he was 0-2-0 with a 5.39 GAA and .837 SV% in 2 starts against the Lightning in 2021-22. His last win against Tampa Bay came April 13, 2021, in “The Bubble” in front of zero fans.

Johansson last faced the Predators on Nov. 27, 2021, as a member of the Florida Panthers, kicking aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced in Sunrise that night. He is expected to do much of the heavy lifting until Vasilevskiy is healthy enough to return after back surgery.

Predators at Lightning picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 4, Predators 3

Moneyline

The LIGHTNING (-160) are a little pricey on the moneyline, but it’s a price worth paying in the home opener. Yes, it will be difficult without Vasilevskiy, but the truth of the matter is that he had a down season last year, and he started out really slow. Perhaps Johansson will benefit from a tremendous offense in front of him.

The Predators (+135) should be improved offensively, but this is still a team which will be clawing to get into one of the final postseason spots. It isn’t a marquee team, and they’re lacking in depth, with a solid top-6 forward group, and a rather margin bottom-6 assortment.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Predators +1.5 (-175) are a little pricey on the puck line. And it isn’t a great play if you would like a little insurance, as Nashville has lost by 3 or more goals in all 3 of its losses in the past 4 games in Tampa.

For early-season games, I might be inclined to play the favorite on the puck line, but this is a rather high price, especially since it could easily be ruined by a late empty-net goal.

AVOID.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (+100) is worth playing lightly at even-money.

Saros struggled mightily against the Lightning last season, and Johansson was limited to just 2 starts and 3 appearances at the NHL level last season, so he is a bit of a wild-card here. The Over is 3-1 in the past 4 meetings between these teams at Amalie Arena, so go high and play a half-unit at best.

Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Nashville Predators (12-9-2) and Tampa Bay Lightning (15-9-1) meet Thursday at Amalie Arena in Tampa. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Predators vs. Lightning odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Predators look to cap a 3-game road trip with a 4th consecutive victory overall. Nashville has benefitted from a combination of a solid power play, timely goals and good goaltending during the streak, including a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders last time out on Friday.

The Lightning were doubled up 4-2 at home by the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday, although they are still a solid 8-3 across the past 11 games overall. These teams just met Nov. 19, with the Lightning coming away with a 3-2 overtime win as the Under connected in the Music City.

Predators at Lightning projected goalies

Juuse Saros (9-6-2, 2.92 GAA, .909 SV%) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (10-8-1, 2.75 GAA, .909 SV%)

Saros allowed 3 goals on 28 shots in a 4-3 overtime road win against the New Jersey Devils Thursday in his most recent outing, and he has won 3 straight starts while going 6-0-1 across the past 7. The lone blemish is a 3-2 OT loss to the Lightning Nov. 19, although he was certainly not at fault with 36 saves.

Vasileskiy had a rather uneven start to the season by his standards, but he actually started to turn things around since that OT win in Nashville. He made 30 saves on 32 shots in that victory, and he has allowed 2 or fewer goals in 5 of his last 7 starts overall, rounding into his usual form.

Predators at Lightning picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 3, Predators 2

Moneyline

The Lightning (-200) will cost you 2 times your potential return, and that’s just too much risk for not enough reward.

This is going to be a low-scoring game with some goaltending that really could go either way.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The PREDATORS +1.5 (-150) aren’t priced out of line if you’d like a little bit of insurance.

Nashville seeks revenge after losing in OT on home ice in the first meeting, and regulation might not be enough here to determine a winner, either. Tampa has been to overtime in 4 of the previous 10 games, winning each contest.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-120) is easily the best play on the board.

Saros and Vasilevskiy are each rounding into mid-season form after some trials and tribulations during the first month or so of the season. Both teams have picked up their respective teams and carried them lately. This will be a game where goals are at a bit of a premium, similar to the first meeting.

Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (4-1-1) and Nashville Predators (4-4-0) meet for the second time in three days at Amalie Arena Monday following the Lightning’s 4-3 victory Saturday. Monday’s puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Predators-Lightning NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Predators at Lightning: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:45 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Predators +150 (bet $100 to win $150) | Lightning -175 (bet $175 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Predators +1.5 (-190) | Lightning -1.5 (+155)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Predators at Lightning: Projected starting goalies

Juuse Saros (3-2-0, .918 SV%, 2.54 GAA) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (4-1-1, .925 SV%, 2.15 GAA)

Saros is expected to return to the crease Monday after veteran Pekka Rinne drew a somewhat surprising start in the first meeting. Saros last played Wednesday, when he stopped 29 of 30 shots in a win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Vasilevskiy snapped a rare two-game losing skid (with one of those going to overtime) with Saturday’s win. He stopped 23 of 26 shots and 2 of the goals allowed were on the power play.

Predators at Lightning: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Predators 2, Lightning 1

Money line (ML)

There’s value on the PREDATORS (+150) as they pivot back to their No. 1 netminder. Vasilevskiy is never outmatched in net, but Saros can rival him on his best nights and is plenty rested.

Tampa Bay registered 58.33% of the total shots attempts, including blocked and missed shots, at 5-on-5 Saturday, but Nashville had 54.55% of the scoring chances at full strength. Should the play up front remain the same, look for Saros to prove to be the difference and help flip the script.

Against the spread (ATS)

PREDATORS +1.5 (-190) are also a fine play with 1 goal of insurance in the event of a loss. The Lightning haven’t beaten anyone by 2 or more goals since their first two games of the season. The Predators have played four straight 1-goal games and are 2-2 in those outings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 6 (-120) is the best play for this game following Saturday’s 7-goal outburst. Nashville is 3-4 against the O/U and Tampa Bay is 3-3 following Saturday’s easy Over on a line of 5.5.

Both teams scored twice on the power play Saturday with the Preds going 2-for-5 and the Bolts going 2-for-7 with the man advantage. Discipline will have been preached by both head coaches on the off-day and each of these goalies is much tougher to beat at full strength.

Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Nashville Predators at Tampa Bay Lightning NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Nashville Predators (4-3-0) play the first half of two games in three days against the Tampa Bay Lightning (3-1-1) at Amalie Arena Saturday. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Predators-Lightning NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Predators at Lightning: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Predators +140 (bet $100 to win $140) | Lightning -165 (bet $165 to win $100)

Andrei Vasilevskiy (3-1-1, .932 SV%, 1.98 GAA)

After starting the season with back-to-back victories over the Columbus Blue Jackets in which he stopped 71 of 74 total shots, Saros dropped back-to-back road games against the Dallas Stars. He returned home to hold the Chicago Blackhawks to 1 goal on 30 shots his last time out.

Vasilevskiy is once again an early Vezina Trophy favorite. He has allowed more than 2 goals in just one of his five starts, but he has faced more than 27 shots just twice, as he’s well-protected behind the defending Stanley Cup champs.

Predators at Lightning: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Predators 3, Lightning 2

Money line (ML)

There’s value on the PREDATORS (+140) in hopes of the road upset. They’re ninth in the NHL with a 5-on-5 Corsi For percentage of 52.74, while the Lightning are 12th at 52.36%. Tampa Bay still has an edge in scoring chances and expected goals at 5-on-5, but look for Saros to stand up to the test in high-difficulty situations.

Nashville is just 2-for-28 on the power play (29th) with a power-play success rate of 7.14%. The Preds are also last in penalty-kill percentage, but they serve just 7.4 minutes in penalties per game. They’ve been playing well at full strength, and some special teams correction is on the way in Nashville.

Against the spread (ATS)

We can add PREDATORS +1.5 (-190) as a lesser, secondary play. After outscoring the lowly Chicago Blackhawks 10-3 in their first two games of the season, the Bolts have two losses and an overtime win in their last three games. Nashville went to extra time in each of its last two games against Chicago and can keep this close, barring penalty trouble.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 6 (-120) in a battle of top netminders. The teams are a combined 4-7 against the Over/Under and both sides play to an average of 5.20 or fewer total goals per game.
